Temple. Sanctuary. Rest.
I was still stressed, completely fatigued, and operating on lower brain functions, but lunch, and the promise of a half hour break on top of the mountain helped keep the thought of descent a distant intangible future thing.
One of the members of our group gave me one hundred yen to offer incense before the Buddha of the temple. It can be considered my first o-settai (gifts of food/money/anything offered to pilgrims), a thought which did not cross my mind as I was only looking forward to sitting down somewhere, and not considering how I was going to make it back down a mountain which was clearly trying to punish me.
