Sphodros abboti

Female Purseweb Spider Purseweb Spider (Sphodros abboti), Alachua County, Florida. These spiders make webs that look very similar to short vines at the base of rough-barked trees, and are very difficult to identify if you don't know what you are looking for. They are the only native spider to Florida that is related to tarantulas. These spiders are also sexually dimorphic, with the males having a brilliant blue abdomen.
