The Price of Freedom
A destroyed barn and a tank on the naval bombing range
This range is part of the Fallon Range Training Complex and is used by the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC). The NSAWC is based out of NAS Fallon and is responsible for providing advanced aviation and tactics training to U.S. Navy Pilots. NSAWC is home to the Naval Strike Warfare Center (STRIKE “U”), the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School (TOPDOME) and the Seahawk Weapons School.
The range is located in a remote valley in the Central Nevada desert, 70 miles from the nearest gas station or store. The valley is a desert paradise with free flowing artesian wells dotting the landscape. The flowing wells support all kinds of plant and wildlife. During my stay I saw lots of free-range cattle, wild mustangs and almost intolerable amounts of flying insects. Scattered along the valley floor are targets used as visual aids and electronic targeting practice. These targets vary from old ranch buildings to tanks simulating a hostile foreign environment.
