The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth ... the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need -- if only we had the eyes to see.
-- Edward Abbey
“Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself.”
Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire

This is a panorama of the Manitowish River in Northern Wisconsin near the town of Boulder Junction. It is in the middle of the Northern Highlands State forest that stretches for thousands of acres of pristine wilderness untouched by man. We spend many hours walking in this special paradise.

One of my favorite places to get away from it all.
Wilderness is not only a haven for native plants and animals but it is also a refuge from society. Its a place to go to hear the wind and little else, see the stars and the galaxies, smell the pine trees, feel the cold water, touch the sky and the ground at the same time, listen to coyotes, eat the fresh snow, walk across the desert sands, and realize why its good to go outside of the city and the suburbs. Fortunately, there is wilderness just outside the limits of the cities and the suburbs in most of the United States, especially in the West....

One of the millions of ponds that dot the Alaskan map, and draw migratory birds each spring. This one looked especially pretty surrounded by the fall foliage.
I eventually was able to make this 11 mile roundtrip up to Jefferson Park Wilderness;
it was a very last minute thing and it is so stunning up there in the Oregon Central Cascades. Just after this they started to close down parts of the park due to the forest fires in close vicinity. I did not do so well on this hike as my replacement hip popped out near the top and I wanted to thank Adrian K for his patience
and help getting to this spot and then eventually the long trip back.

It doesn't get much better than camping beside a wilderness river in the far north, and then being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the water rippling over the rocky river bed. One of the simple joys in life.

Dolly Sods Wilderness is one of the most unique and beautiful areas I have ever visited. This image was taken backing 2014, but had to wait for my photoshop skills to catch up with my what my photographic eye envisioned.

(I think this film is going to be very magical and I have 5 double-packs of it plus one single pack and a few exposures left in the camera still.)
The land reclaims what is hers' by rights, all is ash to ash and dust to dust, swept under the cover of bracken and grass. Old fences fall so be adventurous.
