Early morning aerial shot of a remote wilderness valley in a roadless area of northern British Columbia near the border with Alaska. Remnants of snow can be seen at the higher levels and the tops of the peaks and blue sky with clouds are reflected in the lake. Morning mists hang low in the valley. This is the home of grizzly bears, wolves, eagles and other iconic wilderness species.

The milkyway over the beach campground at Wilderness St. Pk. The only night that was clear while we were there, started raining again a little later.

We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.

― Henry David Thoreau

It is a commonplace of all religious thought, even the most primitive, that the man seeking visions and insight must go apart from his fellows and live for a time in the wilderness.

― Loren Eiseley

[Note: I have mentioned Loren Eiseley's writings to several contacts and would recommend them to all interested in the spiritual and philosophical side of nature. His book "The Star Thrower", a collection of his works, is remarkable in every way. A naturalist who thought well beyond his scientific training, he was referred to as "the heir apparent" to Henry David Thoreau for good reason.]

Another breathtaking view of the slopes of Ben Donich. To watch the snow being whipped up by the wind and traverse the land like a mist was quite spellbinding!

I have photos of majestic fjords, large mountain ranges with breath taking views, just a few hours drive away, but my wilderness is the deep woods in Telemark county, Norway. Here you can walk around in the woods and enjoy the silence

During the day, the trail to Goat Flats feels like wilderness. No airplanes overhead, and no sounds of freeways. At night the wilderness setting feels almost urban in comparison to the day.

High up on a summit of the Western Highlands, in the distance across the water you can make out the dark shapes of the Isle of Skye.

A day of contrasts , both in the light available and the inclement weather, now and again the sun managed to show through those dark and brooding clouds. Viewed from the top of the Applecross Peninsula, Scotland.

Wilderness is space...without time limits...it exists how everyone and everything exists. It means - everywhere and any when.

The Riisitunturi Wilderness Cabin in the National Park with the same name, located in Finnish Lapland. This is an open cabin where you can spend the night (for free). Firewood is provided, as well as gas to cook on. The hut can accomodate up to 6 people. It's very basic, you need to bring most things with you (cooking equipment, candles/lights, toilet paper, a warm sleeping bag, possibly a mattress as there are only 4 in the cabin). There is a wood shed and outdoor toilet.

The cabin is located just below the highest point in the national park, where in winter the trees are covered heavily with snow/rime/frost, a phenomenon called "tykky" in Finnish.

The road to the nearest parking lot is ploughed all winter, and from there it's less than 2 km to the cabin. When we were there (mid January), there were no ski tracks, but later in the season they make a track to the cabin and to the top of the mountain/hill (465 m at the highest point).

This is a 5 second exposure which shows movement in the trees due to the wind :)

Read the whole story of our trip, with many pictures, here: blog.hanneketravels.net/2014/01/tykky-at-riisitunturi-nat...

Tuntsa Wilderness Arie is situated in North-East Finland just close to the Korvatunturi fjäll which is the famous home of Santa Claus. We didn´t meet Santa. He had propably gone to Rovaniemi Arctic Circle for tuorists.

“Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed; if we permit the last virgin forests to be turned into comic books and plastic cigarette cases; if we drive the few remaining members of the wild species into zoos or to extinction; if we pollute the last clear air and dirty the last clean streams and push our paved roads through the last of the silence . . .”

one of my passions is nature and its preservation...saving those bits of wilderness in the world, whether we visit them or not...we know they are there. this piece combines one of my multi-media collage pieces with a vintage map of the world...with lots of texturing...

A lone pair of Canada Geese seem to be enjoying, a brisk and very windy, overcast day on a lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Please view it large if you have the time.

Some of the 'neighbors' out for a walk. Had to snag a picture of this.. I'm usually busy doing something and haven't got to my camera in time. Doe and one of her fawns. She was around here the other day with two fawns in tow. Don't usually see the bucks around, but sometimes see a young buck who's growing in his antlers. :)
