White tailed Eagle - Haliaeetus

Albicilla

Mull

Young White-tailed eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla, ready to land in Bialowieza forest (Poland).

The white-tailed eagle is a very large bird. It measures 66–94 cm (26–37 in) in length with a 1.78–2.45 m (5.8–8.0 ft) wingspan. The wingspan, with a midpoint of 2.18 m (7.2 ft), is on average the largest of any eagle.

"Farewell to an old friend..."

Of course it is a bit ridiculous to think an eagle could ever be your 'friend' but it only seems right to pay tribute to a majestic bird who graced the skies of The Isle of Mull for many years. Many Flickr friends will have seen and photographed this eagle from "The Lady Jayne". The first time I saw him appear and fly alongside the boat will stay with me forever - you can't really put into words what seeing a White Tailed Eagle up close is truly like.

Very sadly this male White Tailed Eagle was killed recently by a rival male - his death confirmed (and identified from his leg ring) while we were on Mull two weeks ago.

His mother was one of the original birds released during the reintroduction of White Tailed Eagles to Scotland and he himself fathered many chicks that are now part of an increasing and thriving population of WTE in these parts.

A younger male has already paired with the female from the Killiechronan territory - so life goes on and a new generation of eagles will no doubt breed here and also soar the skies of the Highlands & Islands of Western Scotland.

R.I.P. to a stunning bird who amazed many a visitor to the Isle of Mull

One of the few White Tailed Eagles found on Mull, Scotland. Blessed with great weather from the Gulf Stream and ideal for photography, I watched the eagle circle overhead before taking a fish from the loch.

I am here sitting beside my boys who are both happily playing their first video games (we finally cracked) and feeling very lucky. Hope all of you feel as happy as I do at some point today.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Black and white of an eagle flying by.

A Bald Eagle caught looking at the camera. Awesome bird. We were at a bird show sponsored by a local bird shop - The Bird Barn.

This limb is well worn away from the Eagles cleaning their beaks on it.

I will be running three workshops to photograph these beautiful and wild White-tailed Eagles and Golden Eagles in Poland later this year with another photographer, John Fanning . Each workshop will cover 4 days overall with 3 full days in the hide. If you like what you see and fancy getting images of these stunning birds for yourself, then please PM myself or John for further detail and to book your place. Please note that if necessary, tuition can be provided.

There is usually an abundance of Buzzards that also come to feed, squabble and simply sit around for you to photograph. The workshop will include return transport from Modlin Airport, Warsaw to your accommodation and all transport from the accommodation to the hide each morning and return in the evening. The hide will be attended in the early morning darkness and only vacated when darkness returns, so it will be early starts for the three days in the hide. Accommodation, breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and a hot evening meal is also included. So everything is organised for you, all you will need to do is book your return flight (relatively cheap from the UK to Warsaw, Poland). You will require a suitable lens of at least 300mm however, 400 - 600mm is recommended. The dates available are as follows, with places for 6 photographers on each:

9th -12th Nov 2017 - 5 places remaining

23rd - 26th Nov 2017 - 4 places remaining

14th - 17th Dec 2017 - 6 places remaining

To see more images taken from the hide, please see the link below to my Poland Album and please note that all of these birds are 100% wild.

Gotcha!

The magnificent White-tailed Eagle is the UK's largest bird with a wingspan of up to 8 feet. Sad to say, they were stupidly hunted to extinction in the UK in the early part of the 20th century but have recently been reintroduced. We currently have around 40 breeding pairs, and this is the female half of one of those.

The White-tailed Eagle are also known as eagle of the rain.... but snow on this occasion. Some call them Sea Eagles or 'flying barn door' too (it's all about that wingspan!)...... I just call them breathtaking.

My friend the White-Tailed Eagle, comes to eat food every day :)

Beautiful bird with a curious slightly comical nature which belies the truth of the beast, a large highly efficient killing machine!
