So many murals in Vancouver. This one is from Sebastian Curi ( an American artist). It was his first mural in a categorie: Figurative/people. As it is not easy to photograph the whole mural, I choose to focus on one part ! Happy CMWD .

“The Kraken” is about our relation and impact on the natural world.
The octopus is very intelligent animal, able to solve complex problems. It is the most advanced invertebrate on earth.
In Norse Mythology an octopus like sea creature called the Kraken was believed to have the power to sink enormous ships.
On this wall the Kraken takes the shape of a number 8, also the symbol for infinity. An animal that takes this shape is said to represent life without end.
Although humankind is the cause of significant change in the global ecosystem, life will persist. The system will not just quit. It is our choice how we will affect it.

Strathcona neighbourhood was blessed with some murals during the 2021 Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) including this one - "Watch Over This Child" by Sasha Mbabazi at 603 Powell Street.
It's surprising the graffiti vandals have not defaced it - yet.
Artist Statement:
Titled "Watch Over This Child", my piece is meant to serve as a call to action, for all of us to take responsibility for the well-being of one-another.
We almost always favour what’s already familiar over what we’ve failed to understand, and retreat to the safety of that with which we are familiar.
It is as important as ever to respect, protect and honour one another as we would our own family.

Vancouver Science World Dome lighting for Blanketing The City: Lighting The Way festival.
It's part of Vancouver Mural Fest (VMF) Winter Arts Festival.
Blanketing The City: Lighting The Way is an evolution of the ongoing public art series designed by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Weaver and Designer, Debra Sparrow in collaboration with VMF (Vancouver Mural Festival).
Blanketing The City: Lighting The Way transposes Coast Salish weaving patterns onto the exteriors of Vancouver’s iconic buildings including Canada Place, BC Place, TELUS Garden and Science World.
Debra Sparrow says:
“Over the past 150 years, Vancouver’s vision of who it was, did not include us. Because Coast Salish weaving patterns reflect the land we are on, everyone who is here today can connect to the patterns and be invited into the vision of the identity of this place.
The patterns can help the people of Vancouver get a sense of where they are, and who the people are that have been here for thousands of years.
The patterns projected on the buildings in Lighting The Way are inspired by patterns on our blankets.
These blankets encompass everything that we are as humans. We use them in all our communities: Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil Waututh, Tsawwassen, Kwantlen, Coquitlam, Comox, the interior and down to the States.
This is a calling. I won't stop doing what I am doing until I wrap the City in our patterns.”

Artist Statement:
“The story of Salmon Woman tells how this supernatural woman brought salmon to Raven.
After Raven’s many travels, he was worn down and tattered. He met and married Salmon Woman who healed him and cleaned him up.
While he was searching for food, she touched the water and hundreds of salmon appeared for him to feast on.
Although she saved him and nursed him back to health, he took her for granted and treated her terribly. In the end, Salmon Woman became fed up and took everything with her when she left him, leaving him as desolate as before.
This design is a commentary about how colonialism has negatively affected the way we treat women, LGBTQ+, and the environment.
Although women are life givers and interconnected with the environment, heteropatriarchy forced a shift in our morals and responsibilities in relation to them.
This representation of Salmon Woman with all the colours of the rainbow is a reminder that until women and LGBTQ+ are valued, respected, and reinstated back into their traditional roles and responsibilities our communities will continue to struggle to become healthy vibrant communities again.” – Phil Gray, 2021
