Our kids were kids.

Were respected and treated as kids.

From the last UNESCO numbers (2005), there were 550.000 brazilian people

who have died by fireguns in the last 24 years.

From those, 205.722 killed were youngers.

This band is another amazing brazilian music. They came from Rio de Janeiro to Diadema, and it was wonderful what they do with his drums, mixing funk, reggae, soul, hip hop, afro brazilian beats... i couldn't stop dancing and shaking. The band was born in a social project ( Cultural Group Afro Reggae ) inside Vigário Geral's favela (a slum) at Rio, which as The Humminbird Project, use the artistc ways, music, painting, theater, dance to take the street kids and the favela's youth out of the violence and drugs ways.

They are strong. Strong as highest big mountains.

I will never forget this day.

Wesley, one of the musicians from Estação Fankalha were leading us with songs

to walk a way without violence, firearms; other ways to be afected by the terrible

conditions of life living in poverty. Yes, they are real.

During the Children at Risk Foundation (CARF) project, music was the gun used

to share wisdom with youngers. They call it Urban Outcries project.

A beautiful way not only to teach, but also to learn from them.

Mothers who had lost their children by violence and guns were doing

a symbolic ritual during the opening of the Urban Outcries project at CARF.

I was thinking how strong were those women,

and for a moment I wasn't able to breath.

This message is from “Urban Outcries” (Gritos Urbanos), a group of young, talented Social Entrepreneurs at Hummingbird, in preparation for our latest programme on Social Communication. Please see www.carfweb.net/gritos and our Blog www.gritosurbanos.blogspot.com

The gigantic plaster face above is a mould made by our volunteer sculptor, Jorge Vargas, which will be used to produce the gigantic mask to be used as the entrance porch of our studio theatre where the first programme called “LIVES – The Faces and Forces of a People” (VIDAS – As Faces e Forças de um Povo) will be presented.

As we are the voice of the young people at Hummingbird, we would just like to take this opportunity to say that we are overwhelmed by and truly grateful for the response to our photo set “Flowers For Flickrs”, which was our present to all Flickr member’s as thanks for the inspiration generated by your images.

The kids are really enjoying all the positive response we are getting and hopefully we will have more Flowers For Flickrs later on.

Many of you have bookmarked us as your contacts and we really appreciate that because we know you will be coming back to visit our gallery time and time again. It is really gratifying to know that our existence is important to you all.

With the above image, “Urban Outcries” hopes you can hear this message, which is aimed directly at your hearts and souls.

I was always walking around, putting words, adding favs, at this photostream . It was amazing to find this kind of work in my country, and i couldn't believe when i saw it. Gregory J.Smith and i started sharing some words, thoughts, photos, and now i feel as litlle piece of this big heart called The Humminbird Project, from CARF Brazil .

Gregory invited me to their Centre to a great and beautiful event, performed by his kids, youths and guests. It was our first meeting and was soberb. I would never find the right words or images to translate what i felt at this event. I am proud to work with them, and not every work allows your heart to feel that. I hope all of you find a gift as this, once in a life, and don't never stop looking for this peacefull and warm inner place.

Thank you Greg,

thank you Humminbirds.

Here , you can read Greg's words about the Harlequin.......... :)

Mariano's figure was black and white, two faces,

happy and sad, the duality faces.

He was the Master of ceremony wich was dead and alive.

He lost his brother by a gun shot too.

He is a strong beautiful man, and I'm proud of him.

Here he is !

That guy I use to look as the biggest heart and great professional.

If you don't know alredy what he does, please take a look at the photostream

Children at Risk Foundation (CARF), and see what vital work he have been

doing more then the last ten years in my country, Brazil.

Don't loose the incredible shots he does with this small camera donated to the Foundation!

Helião, one more musician wich became from the suburban of my city, São Paulo.

He talks about his life and suburn realitys, but without negativity.

Words to build, not to collide, but to make people thinking about this world.

There are 130 NGO working in the poor districts now, as CARF does, and this is helped to made the number of the homicides come down 40% in the last 5 years.

That's the good news! We can change things!

Fábio was invited as a speaker to talk about his past,

involved with drugs, violence, fireguns and more.

While hearing him I felt how powerful is to be present in moments like this, when someone wich had transformed his life and his inner values, speaks loud and clear about his emotions and meanings. That's a strong and real experience.

Traveling trough his words and emotions I could understand how important was his presence and story to the children and youngers there.

He means hope for others.

Here you see Fábio, he is a proud surviver.

You can read more about him on CARF's page.

This was the first view I met on the Urban Outcries from CARF's Foundation. Many of you alredy know the amazing Gregory J. Smith's work with brazilian children at risk.

Now the theme was about people using guns and the problems with that.

This was the Huminnbird Foundation's back garden that day, with a tribute for those who had loose their lifes by guns. It was a very provoking thoughts view.

This band is another amazing brazilian music. .................................................................................................................................................

The NCTC (National Counterterrorism Center) assembled a new set of terrorist attack statistics that provides a more complete - and disturbing - picture of the global terrorist threat. In all, the NCTC found on terrorist incidents in 2004, 6.060 victims who were killed. This means 17 people dying per day in the world.

The UNESCO saids that gun fire killed 550 000 brazilian's people in 24 years,

wich from those, 205.722 killed were youngers.

I made some counts here:

22.916 in a year

62 per day in Brazil

In 2003 alone, there were 39,284 victims, which means an

average of 107 deaths per day.

Some of my brazilian fellows will remeber the "Pavilhão 9" band.

They use to be famous because they never showed their faces, always playing with the head covered, as criminals, always running from the police... cause they use to be very critique with the police's violence.

So, this is one of that guys, and he have been there to talk about changes.

When the Urban Outcries II finished, Fábio came, and asked me to do a portrait with him beside this military policeman. I was surprised by this moment.

Well this is one not just a policeman, this one is Carvalho, a very special man, wich try to change the image and the common behavior into the military corporation. He is a proud man showing to others policemen that they must be a piece of their own comunity, they must respect and help people as Fábio to change their lifes.

This military policeman is Carvalho. Some of you maybe remember my set Kid's protest

where I talked about a sad normal think in my country, wich are the common pratice of killing poor people by the military police. A shame.

Military Police Corporation was created in the dictatorship, and when we start the democracy, they were transformed in a suport tp the Civil Police Corporation.

This man, Carvalho is such a precious person for this city, and future. His posture, his way to be envolved with community and the respect that he shows to every person are the first steps to this long road.

For sure, music is a marvelhous way.

Don't look if you are not strong, it's a terrible image. But you'll find a good discussion.
