Austin, Texas is home to one of the largest urban bat populations. In the summer months the bats take flight at sunset.

Watching the bats emerge from under the Congress Avenue bridge for their nightly forays for food is a favorite evening activity for locals and tourists alike, especially in late summer.

From March through April thousands of mostly female, pregnant Mexican free-tailed bats migrate North to give birth. And they stay through the spring, summer, and early fall.

The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue bridge in downtown Austin is the spring and summer home to some 750,000 bats with up to 1.5 million bats at the peak of the bat-watching season. It's the largest urban bat colony in North America.

If you are in Austin during these times you don't want to miss this experience. More bats emerge than you think possible.
