This Washington Heights restaurant was founded in 1968 and specialized in #friedchicken with its special mix of "Spanish" spices and seasonings. We love its #signage with its mix of #script and sans serif #font and the little cowboy chick :hatched_chick: with a holster, holding a pop gun firing out the word "Fried"! Upon closing, the original #neon sign which wrapped around the corner, was carefully removed and stored by the owners. They recently reached out to us to let us know that they donated their #neonsign to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. Lenny's #Pizzeria was founded in 1953 and has been run by Frank Giordano and his family since 1983. Lenny’s Pizza became famous after it was used in a scene for the movie where the character played by John Travolta is seen ordering two slices of #pizza from Lenny’s, and eating them “double-decker” style, one piled on top of the other :pizza::pizza:. This old-school #hardware store has been in business since 1939. Seymour Shepetin's brothers, who were all electricians, ran the shop until they all passed away while serving in World War II, leaving Seymour the business. We couldn't think of a more patriotic store :us:than this. Courtland Ave. Food in the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx is a typical New York-style #bodega. Bodega is the Spanish word for "warehouse" and is generally used to describe a small store selling a wide variety of items including soda, #beer, #cigarettes, cold cuts, packaged food, #candy and flowers. We loved that this bodega had the typical yellow awning and metal #sign with #handpainted letters advertising the goods that are sold inside. Years ago, there were hundreds of these specific-style bodegas all around the five boroughs but in the face of modernization, they are slowly disappearing and often replaced by a more modern #storefront with plastic signs and awnings. Emey's Bike Shop in the Gramercy neighborhood has a facade made of zinc, which dates back to around 1900.
