After grabbing the squirrel image below, I found this big bird the neighborhood swamp. It was approx 135' away in a magnolia tree. Captured with Canon 40D, Canon 500 + 1.4xTC on monopod.
Each summer I go to a cottage in North Frontenac for a couple of weeks, and just unplug. One of the great distractions is the wildlife, birds included. This Song Sparrow was a part of a nesting pair, and from the contents of its bill over the week one could create a taxonomy of the insects of eastern Ontario - it darted in and out of the trees capturing insects of all kinds to take back to the nest. Fortunately one of its launch points back to the nest was at eye height. And, fortunately, it wasn't always raining.

All trees captured nearby my hometown in the northern part of Hesse in Germany
I took this recently on the days we had the big moon. The picture is a simple silhouette of a dead tree.
This tree captured my attention as I was clicking the sunset. It
stood out in dark contrast to the brilliant colors around it. I feel
like we do that too, with God's glory all around us, but we feel like
we are in darkness. The problems in our lives seem so heavy and hard
to get through, and yet, if we look up, give glory to God, we may find
that light is around us, and hope is before us, and that our problems
aren't as horrible as we thought they were. May you find light in the
midst of your troubles, and may God's glory fill you with hope

On Explore, June 13 - Thank you everyone :-)
I was snapping away at this sunset when I heard these geese coming from the direction of the tree line, so I just kept my focus and when they appeared in the frame, I got them. How cool is that? My first thought was these four were on a double date....lol.
I found this new spot at the forest preserve tonight. They chopped all the tall weeds which enabled me to easily get to the shoreline of this rarely visited section of the park. Its the perfect location to catch sunsets. I was so happy the weeds were gone. I can only imagine what kind of critters and creepy crawly things lived in the tall weeds. Anyone who knows me, knows how much I hate bugs....lol. Especially spiders. *big sigh*
Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Today started off very rainy so I started off the day by going out shopping. Didnt spend too much money....lol. By mid afternoon, the clouds broke up and allowed the sun to set beautifully. What a way to end the day.
I'm still dealing with the learning curve of manual settings. What I dont get is figuring out the right combination of ISO, shutter speed, and f-stop to get the right exposure. Im spending a lot of time flipping around to different settings. Is that just how its gonna be during this learning phase? Or am I making this harder than it is?
Im ok with the results of this image but someone else might look at this and think differently. Please share your thoughts. I appreciate any and all comments, good or bad.
Thanks :-)
Cardinal in the tree, captured from about 35 feet away. I think he had spotted something white and long too ...
Despite my sadness about the end of summer, fall is very pretty here in Northern Minnesota. As Exhibit A, I offer this maple tree, captured in full peak in the University of Minnesota Forestry Station near Cloquet, MN. Taken 3 October 2010.
Aged oaks with plagiotropic and slanted branches bearing rather autonomous shoot systems that look as small trees. Captured near Pushchino, Moscow region
