From cinematreasures.org” The Art Moderne-style State Theatre, located on Main Street near Colfax Avenue opened May 14, 1942 with Gene Tierney in “Sundown”. It was operated by the Butterfield chain until the 1960’s. In February 1967 it was taken over by Fox Eastern Theatres Corp.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s, it was one of four theatres open in Benton Harbor, along with the Liberty Theatre, City Theatre, and Lake Theatre. But today, only the State Theatre remains standing, although the theatre is currently closed.” #drivein #driveinmovie #movies #movie #bentonharbor #cinematreasures #cinema #cinemapalace #signage #ipulledoverforthis #michigansign #statetheater #ig_signage #trb_ipoft_signs #marquee #everything_signage #tgjcinema #just_unitedstates #backroad_visions #style_and_decay #midwestsnaps #explore_countryside_ #michigan

Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, which opened in 2013. Chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi took over the space where Rocco Ristorante operated for close to 90 years. The third-generation owner Anthony DaSilva told us when we interviewed him for our book "New York Nights", that he"lost the space because his landlord raised his rent from $8,000 a month to $18,000 a month." Although we are sad to see Rocco closed after so many years of serving #Italian food in the Village we are happy that the original #neonsign was repurposed for Carbone instead of being thrown away like many other #neon signs which have disappeared from NYC. #vintagesign #vintage #neongeeks #pasta #signgeeks #disappearingfaceofnewyork #trb_ipoft_signs #food #ipulledoverforthis
#July4th, Nathan's Famous in Coney Island will hold its annual #hotdog eating contest. This iconic #frankfurter store opened 100 years ago as a small 5-foot long counter selling #hotdogs for a nickel. Nathan and Ida Handwerker, #Polish immigrants, started the business insisting on selling quality specially spiced franks which came in natural casings and freshly fried potatoes. This weekend, this original location will sell an estimated 26,000 hot dogs! Photo and full text on the history of this #storefront appear in our book "New York Nights". This photo really highlights the glorious #vintage #neon signs Nathan's has as it just had finished raining and the glow of the #neon signs are reflected in the puddles on the sidewalk. #WHPilluminate #neonsign #neongeeks #signgeeks #tv_retro #tv_typography #tv_retrotype #trb_ipoft_signs #everything_signage #signcollective #jj_texttypographical #myfeatureshoot #gas_food_lodging
Dublin House is a family-owned #Irish #pub which has been in business since 1921. It was founded by John Carway, an Irish immigrant from Dublin who rented the space during Prohibition. We absolutely love its #vintage #neonsign in the shape of a #harp and its letters that say "TAP ROOM" and "BAR" which blink on and off. The bartender, Mr. Daly told us that the reason the #neon #sign has the words "tap room" is that Dublin House was one of the first #bars to offer #beer on tap. Full interview with Mr. Daly and nighttime photo of entire #storefront with neon #signage appear in our book "New York Nights". #trb_ipoft_signs #tv_retro #tv_typography #tv_retrotype #bar #neongeeks #signgeeks #signcollective #everything_signage #foundtype #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis
It was known for its retro vibe and Southern comfort food like Mac-and-Cheese and barbecue ribs. The space where Duke's was located as well as the adjoining restaurant City Crab will be the new location of Danny Meyer's Union Square Cafe. We are not sure what happened to all of its #neon and #vintage #signage but hope that it was saved. This vintage overhanging #neonsign from the 1950s was recently uncovered as it had been hidden by a newer plastic face advertising a pizzeria that had occupied the space for the last decade. We couldn't find out much about this old furniture store although it claims to have been in business since 1899. The #storefront is presently being renovated again (for a new restaurant) and it is unclear whether the #signage will be removed entirely or covered up again! If the #neon sign is taken down, the new owners as per New York City law will NOT be able to install such a large overhanging #sign again since it violates the newer laws stipulating that signage cannot overhang more than 18 inches from the facade. #tv_retro #tv_typography #signgeeks #tv_retrotype #signcollective #trb_ipoft_signs #everything_signage #typevstime #Reportagespotlight
Clover Delicatessen :four_leaf_clover: is owned and operated by the third-generation of the Cuttita family. They lovingly maintain their gorgeous #neon #signs that line both the front and side of their #storefront. We love the #font that was used as well as the 2-color #neonsign in red and green which is a combination not seen too often (at least in #NYC). We also are big fans of the #vintage street sign they have in their window. We photographed the front of this great #deli for our book "Store Front:The Disappearing Face of New York" in 2004 but this side view is more recent (notice our dog Hudson sitting patiently in the background waiting for us to finish taking the photo) #ipulledoverforthis #typevstime #fontlove #signgeeks #jj_texttypographical #popyacolour #trb_ipoft_signs #tv_texttypographical #tv_retrotype #typography #type
We always love finding old Coca-Cola #signage as it takes us right back to the time when the company gave these signs away for free to businesses that sold their product. All the small businesses had to do was add their own copy, usually in the form of enamel #lettering that was also supplied by #cocacola. #signgeeks #tv_retrotype #jj_texttypographical #signcollective #typevstime #ipulledoverforthis #gas_food_lodging #trb_ipoft_signs #guardiancities #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #vintage #signsofgrime #myfeatureshoot #filthyfacades
Nathan's Famous was opened in 1916 by Nathan Handwerker, a Jewish immigrant from Poland. He and his wife Ida opened the #hotdog stand with $300 borrowed from their friends, the entertainers Jimmy Durante and Eddie Cantor. Nathan's became popular in #coneyisland due to its low prices, attention grabbing #signage and attractive location near the beach and amusement parks. This amazing #neonsign was installed around 1960 and was made by the Salzman Sign co. We just can't get enough of that little #hotdog guy with an apron on and a chef hat and holding a #camera and a tray of #food! #typography #type #typevstime #signgeeks #neongeeks #fontastic #fontlove #foundtype #ipulledoverforthis #jj_texttypographical #signcollective #americana #insta_america_americana #ig_signage #trb_ipoft_signs #ipoft_signshots #popyacolour #everything_signage
Joe's Tavern In Chelsea has not been open in over 20 years but we love that this #vintage #neonsign has survived. It is surprising because this part of western Chelsea near the High Line has become very gentrified and many old buildings like this one have met the wrecking ball to become expensive glass condos. Not only do we hope this #neon survives but we also hope that this old brick tenement building with its peeling paint lives on. #signgeeks #ipulledoverforthis #signcollective #tv_retrotype #jj_texture #ig_signage #jj_texttypographical #gas_food_lodging #everything_signage #signofgrime #trb_ipoft_signs #80sixd
The current owner told us that this #neon #sign was installed in the 1950s by Billy, the founder of this #liquor :cocktail::beer:store. Sadly the owner told us that the #neonsign no longer lights up at night although it only needs minor repairs as all of the tubes are in place. #signgeeks #jj_texttypographical #tv_retrotype #typevstime #signcollective #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #ig_signage #hartford #everything_signage #reportagespotlight #myfeatureshoot #trb_ipoft_signs #insta_america #insta_america_americana

Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side was established in 1888. It's famous for its #jewish deli #food including its cured corned beef and pastrami. They go through several thousand pounds of#pastrami each week. The interior and #vintage #neonsign are original. Their slogan "Send a Salami to your boy in the Army" started during World War II. This #handpaintedsign is located on the Ludlow street side of the #storefront. Azucar Ice Cream Company in Little Havava, Miami specializes in artisanal #icecream and #sorbet in #Cuban and tropical flavors. It was founded in 2011 and is known for its #Abuela Maria flavor that has Maria #cookies and ruby red guava and cream cheese in a vanilla ice cream and our favorite Cafe con Leche ice cream (Cuban #coffee with #Oreo). We fell in love with their #storefront with the huge cone holding 5 scoops and a cherry on top and their #neon #sign. Today in NYC, it sure feels like we are in Miami with the high heat and humidity. Wish we could cool off with one of their cones! #ipulledoverforthis #trb_ipoft_signs #gas_food_lodging #miami #signgeeks
George's Coney Island in Worcester, MA has been serving hot dogs since 1918. It started out as a small lunch counter and was renovated by George and Catherine Tsagarelis in 1938 in an art #artdeco style complete with wooden booths, tile floor and long lunch counter. Its Romanoff-designed enormous iconic #neon #sign is 60 feet tall and was installed in 1940. George came up with the idea for the sign and held up a #hotdog dripping with #mustard and had someone take a photo of it to be used as a model for the #neonsign maker. They specialize in hot dogs with their famous secret #chili sauce, yellow mustard and chopped onions. #signgeeks #neongeeks #coneyisland #vintage #ipullledoverforthis #coneys #frankfurter #typography #fontastic #trb_ipoft_signs
