In one of the most southerly cities in the world this is just one room of an amazing collection.

Les suppositions sur la fondation de Varanasi, anciennement appelée Bénarès, font référence au VIIe siècle av. J.-C. Après l’Illumination, Bouddha aurait effectué son premier sermon à Sarnath située à une dizaine de kilomètres de la cité.(quelques clichés prévus en fin d'album
Mentionnée dans le Ramayana et le Mahabharata, épiques poèmes hindoues,Varanasi se présente comme la cité sacrée de Shiva.
De l’assaut des Ghaznévides en 1033 à l’invasion moghole mené par Aurangzeb, Varanasi connut à maintes reprises le pillage et l’invasion musulmane avant d’être renommée Mohammadabad. Les conquérants se servirent des matériaux des temples démolis pour bâtir des mosquées.
En 1775, les Britanniques s’emparèrent de la ville. Bien que la majorité des temples de la cité datent des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, Varanasi a conservé son caractère sacré et restera un des hauts lieux de la religion hindoue.
Le 7 mars 2006, Varanasi connut de nouveau une attaque, revendiquée par le Lashkar-e-Qadar.
Aujourd'hui Varanasi figure parmi les plus anciennes cités du monde. Haut lieu de pèlerinage pour les adeptes de la religion hindoue, la ville est traversée par le Gange qui symbolise les cheveux de la déesse Shiva
