consigo a toalha.

Today is Towel Day.

Towel Day is an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952-2001). On that day, fans around the universe proudly carry a towel in his honour. The commemoration was first held in 2001, two weeks after Adams' death on May 11, 2001.

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

And Scavenge Challenge #25 Bonus: If you are a lover of Douglas Adams' "Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy" and related works, be sure you have your towel! Towel photos should be posted to the pool on May 25, International Towel Day.

Well today has been a beautiful day out, but I definitely could do without all of the cicadas flying around..blech..I think they are gross. They are rampant this year, here in this part of NC and it is all you hear around here is the constant humming of them during the day. It isn't like the pretty sound that crickets make..it is a sound that gets irritating after awhile, lol. :D Anyway, here is my addition to today's FGR challenge of Towel Day. I have never seen or read Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so I am not too sure if this keeps with the theme..but I hope it does. it is my favorite beach towel, because it has Betty Boop on it. My husband bought it for me at Universal Studios in Florida, when we all went on vacation there a few years ago now. We had just gotten off of this ride that we rode more than once that was like a white water rapids type of ride..it was awesome. :D

At my parents farm - about as different a landscape as the one I left in Canada as you could imagine. Flat and empty and nothing as far as the eye can see.

I thought I'd go out and try and get a silhouette photo on the road, but the pup decided to come too, and it all ended up being a game of chase the towel, bite the towel, and hold on to the towel for as long as possible.

Explored! #45

When I first saw Cyn's Portrait of a Woman in a Red Turban, it was so close to the work of Jan van Eyck, that I recognized the influence immediately. I was, in fact, astounded that I not only recalled the name, but also the painting after a couple of decades of not looking at the art history books on my shelves. Cyn's work is exactly what Van Eyck would have created if he had the tools of a modern photographer.

So in honor of cynthiak, I decided to do my own take on the man in a turban, and allow the old master who influenced me the most to shine through. I hope it is not to difficult to tell who that was. Oh, and for those that give a damn, this was SOOC, except for a 90 degree turn and an 8X10 crop.

About Towel Day

Tuesday Truth: I've never read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Should I?

Strobist: AlienBee 800 with HOBD-W camera left. Triggered by Cybersync.

Better Big and on Black

It's small but special.

Guess I'm channeling cozy blanket feelings too with the thumb. Oh well.

The Rogue Players are using Towel Day as their theme. In honor of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Mini towel is item collected from Comic Con when the movie can out.

Monday May 25th is also Geek Pride day.

*Things you may not know about me and today's random fact:

I'm a closet geek. Well not that secret really. Ok. I love Star Wars. My brother swears that my sis and I ruined some of his original toys. Also it's possible the 1st movie I ever saw in a theater was SW as an infant. He says I cried through it. I like to say Darth Vader scared me. :P

Somewhere in storage are childhood Halloween photos of us dressed as Darth and Lea. (from SW not Return of the Jedi -Lea)

Even watched Return of the Jedi on tv the other night.

Oh yeah.

if you live in Club Marazul - you need to ask for it in Spanish: "Sin cabeza y sin pie" Translation: no head; no feet. Oh , and Gracias.

Club Marazul was a Club Hotel for French Tourists on the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. There was a tiny grocery in the building that was serviced by Canarians who spoke Spanish and French. Sadly, I only spoke English. I lived here for about a year and one of my neighbors finally helped me to purchase one of the gorgeous looking chickens they had at the butcher - but I had no cleaver, so I never thought I could purchase one. It was one of those moments that I learned "ask and ye shall receive".

The club towel has been with me since 1984.

FGR - Towel Day

Today is the widely appreciated and well known International Towel Day. From Wikipedia:

Towel Day is celebrated every May 25 as a tribute by fans of the late author Douglas Adams. On this day, fans carry a towel with them to demonstrate their love for the books and the author. The commemoration was first held in 2001, two weeks after Adams' death on May 11, 2001. The towel is a reference to Adams's popular science fiction comedy series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

So, did you carry a towel with you today?

And of course it "bares" repeating.

The Book: It is of course well known that careless talk costs lives, but the full scale of the problem is not always appreciated. For instance, at the very moment that Arthur Dent said "I wouldn't want to go anywhere without my wonderful towel," a freak wormhole opened up in the fabric of the space-time continuum and carried his words far far back in time across almost infinite reaches of space to a distant Galaxy where strange and warlike beings were poised on the brink of frightful interstellar battle. The two opposing leaders, resplendent in their black jewelled battle shorts, were meeting for the last time, when, a dreadful silence fell, and, at that very moment, the words, "I wouldn't want to go anywhere without my wonderful towel" drifted across the conference table. Unfortunately, in their native tongue, this was the most appalling insult imaginable, so the two opposing battle fleets decided to settle their few remaining differences in order to launch a joint attack on our galaxy, now positively identified as the source of the offending remark. For thousands of years the mighty starships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the planet Earth - where, due to a terrible miscalculation of scale, the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog. Those who study the complex interplay of cause and effect in the history of the Universe say that this sort of thing is going on all the time. ~~~The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

to be or not to be - that is the question

Don't panic and carry a towel

Day 145 If you know The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you'll understand. If not, go read the book or watch the film. I'm not explaining it.

Day 51 Year 3 Um, How am I suppose to remain calm when I'm stuck with only a small hand towel in space?

Day 293 - Don't Panic

"The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels.

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical value — you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble‐sanded beaches of Santraginus Ⅴ, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand‐to‐hand‐combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindbogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough."

It is Towel Day today - so I finally can do my Douglas Adams shot.

“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.” - Douglas Adams

Hiding from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal!

DON'T PANIC!

What's more universal than Sailormoon?! Well, maybe Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker Series... but marry the two with Towel Day on May 25th!

What's 6 x 9? Well 42!

This is a set of three handtowels in red, blue, and green; unused with a matching case still with tag.

There's only one case though two are shown because this is a composite of two photos that had the case in both pictures.

What I like about this scene is without thinking I had the original box (not just the jewel case though I have that and the CD too) for the North American version of the 3D Adventures of Sailor Moon Computer Game in the background that has the same pose as on the bottom of the towels only flopped.

More Sailor Moon Towels in the previous and next photos, as well as some washcloths for Sailormoon, Pokemon and DoReMi.

~~

All these (and more) need new homes as I'm going to a different country for an extended stay soon so send me a Flickr Mail message (access through the arrow that appears near my profile photo when mousing over it) if interested.

Towelday T-Friends! T-

Day 139

Here's my Towel Day 2010 photo number two in my attempt to make up for being lazy and not posting the last 3 days.

Also, I'd like to point out my not-so-grey hair.... I finally got around to dying it today. Which I have been meaning to do for quite some time.... as my hair is really starting to go grey now. I've had grey hair for a while... but more recently it's become more plentiful. So I grabbed a box from Publix and gave myself some nice color. It's not perfect... but it also was only about 4 bucks, instead of the crazy hundred plus it costs to get it done at the salon. =)

Happy Towel Day!

In a mute embrace, they drifted up till they were swimming among the misty wraiths of moisture that you can see feathering around the wings of an airplane but can never feel because you are sitting warm inside the stuffy airplane and looking through the little scratchy Plexiglas window while somebody else's son tries patiently to pour warm milk into your shirt.
