The Beggars bridge was built in 1619 and has the initials TF inscribed into the Stone. The local tail is that Tom Ferries a moors farmers son fell in love with young lady call Anges. Tom had to ford the river when it was low enough to meet up with Anges. Her father thought Tom of poor stock and demanded he stopped seeing Anges. Tom went to sea to seek his fortune and returned rich and married Anges. He then built the bridge so no other lovers could be kept apart by the River Esk.
