A closer up view of the old barge trapped on the weir at Castleford.

The river was quite full that night and I liked the swirling effect of the water and the way the light lead up to and around the hull.

St. Thomas can be a bit crowded, but it does have a few more secluded places where there's a good chance you can be alone. This is one of those places.

Thomas Paine (January 29, 1737 – June 8, 1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain.

Born in Thetford, England, in the county of Norfolk, Paine emigrated to the British American colonies in 1774 with the help of Benjamin Franklin, arriving just in time to participate in the American Revolution.

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is a presidential memorial in Washington, D.C., dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, an American Founding Father and the third President of the United States. The neoclassical building was designed by the architect John Russell Pope and built by the Philadelphia contractor John McShain. Construction of the building began in 1939 and was completed in 1943. The bronze statue of Jefferson was added in 1947.

St. Thomas, by Pierre Le Gros. Nave of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Rome.

One of the twelve apostles of Jesus, according to the New Testament. Thomas is informally referred to as "Doubting Thomas" because he doubted Jesus' resurrection when first told (in the Gospel of John account only), followed later by his confession of faith, "My Lord and my God," on seeing Jesus' wounded body.

Pierre Le Gros (1666-1719) was a French sculptor, active almost exclusively in Baroque Rome.

I’ve always liked this sign in the Midtown area of San Jose. I pass it often on the way to a favorite taqueria. Well, I used to pass it often. The sign was recently taken down, prompting local preservationists to renew the discussion of how to save signs like this from disappearing from public view.

More old photos Thomas was one of my daughters furry friends. I remember they use to play hide and seek and have tea parties. This guy was always by her side and they say dogs are loyal.

The reason I am looking at old photographs of Thomas is that I'm making a needle-felted portrait of him and I need to check some of his markings. This is a scan of an 8x10 print (analog). I like Thomas's "pyramid" stance with the triangle of the pennant, and the edges of the curtains.

Encouraged by the positive reception of his large-scale watercolors in an exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts,Eakins's sent this striking work and two other figure subjects to the 1878 American Watercolor Society in New York. For twenty-first century viewers the intergenerational scene appears to emphasize the individualized figure's post-Civil War emancipation (note the framed image of Abraham Lincoln with his son Tad at upper left). Nineteenth Century critics interpreted the subject as a "comedy of plantation life"more akin to Eakins old-fashioned subjects than a contemporary and sympathetic encounter. When it was sent to a Boston exhibition later than year,it earned the artist his first award a silver metal.

This church was begun in Norman times, with the tower being rebuilt in 1503. The tower is now the only remaining part of St Mary, the rest having been demolished in 1871 with some of the stone being used to enlarge the nearby St George’s which itself was destroyed, apart from its tower, in WW2.

Thomas's Pika (Ochotona thomasi) is yet another mammal with barely any published photographs. It is a Chinese endemic, being restricted to isolated forested peaks within a relatively small area. It was only described new to science in 1948 but that was mainly due to its similarity to other Pika species. In fact we weren't sure of its identity until we sent photographs to Pika expert Vladimir Dinets who confirmed this as Thomas's Pika, mainly on the basis of its very narrow face, visible here.

Pikas look rather rodent-like but they are actually lagomorphs like rabbits, but they are only gerbil-sized. Thomas's Pika was named in 1948 by the Russian zoologist A. I. Argyropulo in honour of the late British Mammalogist F.R.O. Thomas (1858-1929) who worked at the Natural History Museum in London and described more than 2000 small mammals newto science.

Took this in Thomas Circle in downtown DC. Used high aperture and short exposure time to get the light trails on this one. Most of the light trails are from a DC Metro bus going by. Used light trail to bring out the contrast between the light and sky.

RIP

I woke up this morning to the sad news that a British institution, Thomas Cook has gone bust.

A few weeks ago I decided to tick another box off on the bucket list and go plane spotting. I only took two photos of the aircraft though! One of them was of a subsidiary of Thomas Cook - Cook's Club. I'm not sure if this is affected by the collapse. though. I took the shot because I liked the branding, colours and graphics.

Sympathies to anyone who is caught up in what was referred to in todays press as the biggest peace time repatriation.
