There is a silence where hath been no sound.

There is a silence where no sound may be...

In the cold grave, under the deep deep sea.

-Thomas Hood

Inspired by the award winning movie "The Piano"... photo taken at HuMaNoiD (Gilmour Sim) with added editing.

At night! I think of my piano in its ocean grave, and sometimes of myself floating above it. Down there everything is so still and silent that it lulls me to sleep. It is a weird lullaby and so it is; it is mine. - The Piano (1993)

TOTW- Cinematic Moments...

Ok... doing nothing for a whole week is making me go crazy now... as you can see I ended up laying on top of my piano... have I lost it ??? guess so...

Hoy tuve emociones. Deus gratia. Sigo vivo, creo.

22 March 1994 saw New Zealand filmmaking come into the limelight when Jane Campion’s film The Piano won two Oscars. New Zealand born Anna Paquin won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role as Flora McGrath in the celebrated historical drama. Jane Campion, director, took home the award for best original screenplay. American actress Holly Hunter also won best actress for her portrayal of Ada McGrath, Flora’s mother. The film also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Set during the mid-19th century in a rainy, mud-covered backwater on the west coast of New Zealand, the film revolves around Ada McGrath, the mute mother of Flora, her passion for playing the piano and her efforts to regain her piano after it is sold.

The Piano was filmed 40-minutes out of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, on the rugged west coast beach of Karekare and in the surrounding rainforest. The beach has since been named as one of the country’s top 10 beaches.

This photograph of Karekare is part of a collection that came from the holdings of New Zealand Post Archives, which is part of the Post Office Museum and Archives. This collection contains a large amount of photographic material, as well as a range of publications, promotional material, postal history publications and departmental manuals.

The Piano (1993) Directed by Jane Campion.

Starring: Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, Anna Paquin

Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival

It is the mid-nineteenth century. Ada is a mute who has a young daughter, Flora. In an arranged marriage she leaves her native Scotland accompanied by her daughter and her beloved piano. Life in the rugged forests of New Zealand's South Island is not all she may have imagined and nor is her relationship with her new husband Stewart. She suffers torment and loss when Stewart sells her piano to a neighbour, George. Ada learns from George that she may earn back her piano by giving him piano lessons, but only with certain other conditions attached. At first Ada despises George but slowly their relationship is transformed and this propels them into a dire situation.

The Angelus Library and the many test rooms for its sub-scribers are an interesting study in modern musical develop-ment. A wonderful performance of a professional ballet dancer. The photograph was taken in Krakow, Poland in a classroom of a ballet school located in historic building (Krakow’s Main Square).

Brighton Station has a wonderful piano on its concourse for commuters, with time on their hands, to play. It's painted in vivid seaside stripes and 'Please Play Me' is painted on the front. If I'm going to the station I try and leave time to catch a portrait of someone playing the piano. Today I got lucky.

Meet Ignacio or Nacio as he told me to call him. He was playing the piano beautifully for a large group of his friends and fellow students. The group were from Argentina on a study programme to learn English through a study cafe just behind the station. They called it a Spratch Cafe. Nacio was very interested in my camera and told me he's in his first year of a 3 year course studying Cineotography. He eventually wants to be a film editor.

Thank you Nacio - I hope you like your portait and enjoy the rest of your stay in Brighton
