desert snowberry, Symphoricarpos longiflorus, Nevada, White Mountains, Sugarloaf, Sugarloaf Canyon, Pinchot Creek - Columbus Salt Marsh watershed, elevation 2646 m (8680 ft).

This is a common and widespread shrub of rocky places in the deserts and lower mountains of southwestern North America, and sometimes ascends to the lower edge of the subalpine zone. The flowers here seem a little shorter than average for the species, maybe because of the higher elevation or the poor volcanic soils.

I'm not absolutely sure which Abelia was planted ... possibly 'Edward Goucher'. I don't think it's Abelia x grandiflora.

An early autumn visit to Borde Hill Garden in West Sussex, primarily to see the rare flowering of the two Emmenopterys henryi trees.

There was also a sculpture trail, a Harley Davidson gathering, and live music by Willie Austen and Paul Stenton. A brilliant day out.

Symphoricarpos albus var laevigatus—snowberry. This is the upright shrubby variety found mainly in the Western United States and Canada, but introduced elsewhere. Other varieties tend to have a prostrate habit. The variety is found at many spots within our garden, often planted by birds instead of humans. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA

The Wisley Autumn Plant Fair ... and the Surrey Sculpture Trail ... plus the usual lovely walk around the gardens. Luckily the rain held off until just as we were leaving.
