ƒ5³ by LAB[AU] is an interactive kinetic light sculpture, extending the bi-dimensional screen space, by transposition of its pixel resolution to the physical space. Conceived as a modular infrastructure, 16n _ ƒ5³ is a communication and computation system, propagating in form of light and sound, the events it inhabits. Presence and motion create and alter the transmitted data, and propagation of this data becomes a space-time parameter.

Every year, for one weekend, the TodaysArt Festival brings a whole range of innovative and groundbreaking acts to the Netherlands. For two days, the city centre of The Hague functions as one big festival terrain, with performances both in the public domain and on several indoor stages. Interactive installations, projections and acts use the city centre as a stage and transform The Hague into an inspiring stronghold of audiovisual experiences.

Gifts Bram Vreven calls them, the beautiful visual effects caused by the movemaent of water over glass or plastic. Vreven uses physical phenomena based on adhesion and cohesion in purely artistic ways. Rejecting scientific pretence, he is only concerned with the beauty of the images.

"16n _ ƒ5³" is the title of the most recent work by the Belgian digital design lab LAb[au]. It's a wall consisting of 125 rotating, rectangular panels ("pixels"). Diffusing the light on one side (white) and absorbing it on the other (black), the pixels constitute a binary language. Between opening and closing, transparency and reflection, light and dark, they transcribe their physical environment into a luminous kinetic play.

Like last year Hotel Mercure served as the backdrop for one of the most spectacular performances during TodaysArt. This year dancers of the Compagnie Retouramont performed a choreography in mid-air, turning the vertical structure of the hotel in a support for movement to spread out. Colluding with the architectural material the dancers built an ethereal architecture, turning our everyday spaces into a playground for expressions.

By using geometric forms and light, Pablo Valbuena alters multiple dimensions of space-time, creating an astounding visual experience. In the past he has worked for several international videogame and film studios investigating spatial concepts applied to virtual environments and digital architecture as a concept designer. His project during TodaysArt 2008 focused on the temporary quality of space, investigating space-time not only as a three dimensional environment, but as space in transformation.

Every year, for one weekend, the TodaysArt Festival transforms the city centre of The Hague into an inspiring stronghold of creativity and audiovisual experiences. In 2008, over 200 artists contributed to the festival, where many different art disciplines were represented, such as film, modern dance, visual art, photography and music.
