Rv 17, ved Steinkjer, på vei mot Namsos, rundt 1 km etter at man tar av fra E6
Close to Steinkjer, central Norway. After a very cold winter, lots of roads in Norway got problems. This is perhaps the most striking example, but on the 80 km between Steinkjer and Namsos we had to slow down several times due to frost heave.
Frost heave is caused by frost in the ground. Frozen water expands and makes the ground rise. If the ground is not well drained and the draining is different on the different parts of the road, the road may be deformed.
The effect is mostly seen in spring. During the winter, the amount of water that freezes is related to heat loss, hence does not vary too much over short distances. The thawing rate is faster and more dependent on the soil and the draining, and frost heave is observed. In a few weeks everything in the ground has thawed completely, and the road will appear OK again. However, too heavy vehicles on the road in this period may destroy the road.
Tour to Norway, North Cape. Day 02 - Layered Fjord Sunset
I left the central town of mid Norway, Trondheim, at noon with the coastal express MS Midnatsol.
We are sailing out the Trondheimsfjorden on our way North. At 3.40 PM the sun is setting partly hidden by some low clouds drifting over the sea out there.
From the net:
The Trondheimsfjord an inlet of the Norwegian Sea, is Norway's third longest fjord at 130 kilometres (81 mi) long. It is located in the west central part of the country, and it stretches from Ørland in west to Steinkjer in north, passing the city of Trondheim on its way.
Its maximum depth is 617 metres (2,024 ft), just inside of Agdenes.
The largest islands in the fjord are Ytterøy and Tautra; the small Munkholmen is located near the harbor of Trondheim; and there are several islands at the entrance of the fjord.
