Star Trail out on the Castereagh Hwy, between Mudgee and Lithgow, NSW.

During the day in Volcanoes N.P. on Hawaii, the only sign of volcanic activity was a plume of smoke coming out of an active crater near the main visitor center of...

My first attempt at stars trails, didn't go as well as I hoped but here is the result. This a stack of 161 images that took around an hour and a half to take. So I was disappointed to realise the my girfriend's camera was a little our of focus. Looking forward to trying it again at some point.

HAPPY MONDAY EVERYONE!!

EXPLORE #332 Thanks everyone for the visit, comments, notes and fave!!!

Pls don't post here any group invite, glitter text or stuff like that.

After talking to somebody about how to photograph star trails I thought I would give it a go. I think I shall be trying again and finding better fore grounds to make more of an interesting photo. Hardest part will be leaving my bed at 2 in the morning!!!! This one was easy as it was taken from my bedroom window.

The yellow star was only lit up for one frame, and for a much shorter exposure than the stars. The stars were exposed for five hours, one minute at a time.

Picture file from an old shareware adventure game called Star Guardian on the Mac, early 90's. One of the many cool bits of digitized artwork from the game, although the game's author admitted to appropriating some of the game's artwork from various sources, with permission.

This image is made up of 6 10 minute exposures, stacked with the "lighten" filter in Photoshop. The really bright trail is Polaris (the north star). As you can see, it's not actually right on the celestial pole, but it's close enough!

Interestingly, this is the first time I've felt a square crop to really work for the subject matter...I wonder why :D.

This photo is exposed by 30 minutes in order to get the circled star trail. I point the center to the North polar star. And this one is post modified with software to get the film like effect and to light up the star lights.

Taken east of Tucson over the lower flanks of the Santa Catalina Mountains. the stars can be seen rotating in the sky around the North Star.

My second successful star trails photograph was made at the same location as my first, but with a wider lens which allowed me to include Miner's Peak, Ha Ling Peak and the east end of Mount Rundle, along with some snow-covered foreground as part of the composition.

The biggest challenges with this stacked image related to minimizing the brightness of the clouds (and keeping them soft looking) and the noise resulting from the high ISO.

"We now know that stars and galaxies are born, live out their natural span, and die. What applies to the vast realities of the universe applies equally to the miniature realms of our bodies. From a purely physical perspective, our bodies are composed of the same materials and chemical compounds as the distant galaxies. In this sense we are quite literally children of the stars".
