Stars Clouds and light pollution

This is a failed photograph of the night sky. So why am I posting it? The reason I consider it a failure is that the moon was up; not only that but it was a full moon, and it is impossible to get a good star phtograph, particularly one that shows the Milky Way, when the moon is causing light polution in the sky.

There wasn't much choice though, as this was shot while on holiday in Les Deux Alpes and only being there for a week the moon was a given.

Having said that the night sky is still amazing, with billions and billions of stars, not to mention planets and moons that are invisible.

Hopefully there will be an opportunity soon to spend an evening far enough away from the lights of London to get a real photo of the night sky with the Milky Way showing up in all its splendour. Are you ready Hannah Young?

Inspired by the star trails Amber's been shooting recently... Naturally I had to copy her try it too... :)

My first attempt in shooting the night sky... Light pollution is a problem here and I find it hard to process the image. But I love the way the camera sees more stars than I do ;-)

Woohoo! I managed to put two days in a row on flickr!

Also guys, sorry for the double upload, there is a contest that ends today and I need to get my entries up.

After a long week indoors, I felt the need for a dark-sky fix. I headed east toward the Sierra Foothills about 2:00 in the afternoon; got the last of the sunset and waited for the stars to show. For a while I just had to drink in the stars and sky before I could even set up my camera. Back home by midnight. This is a combination of two shots -- one for the foreground and one for the stars. A passing truck (I think it was a forest ranger) paused for a second and provided the foreground light.

umas estrelas feitas à mão em porcelana para C . Bohême ... em breve! *

Star of India was built in 1863 as Euterpe, a full-rigged iron windjammer ship in Ramsey, Isle of Man. After a full career sailing from Great Britain to India then to New Zealand, she became a salmon hauler on the Alaska then to California route. After retirement in 1926, she was restored between 1962 and 1963 and is now a seaworthy museum ship ported at the San Diego Maritime Museum. She is the 2nd oldest ship that still sails regularly and the oldest iron hulled merchant ship still floating. The ship is both a California and United States National Historic Landmark.

My latest and so far most successful attempt at star trails. This time rather than simply taking a single long exposure I took a number of shots over 30 mins and combined them in Photoshop resulting in a lot less noise and many more visible trails. I need to experiment further.

Since taking this photo, I found an article on the web photographingspace.com/how-to-maintain-star-colour-in-you... which states that even in areas of high light pollution you can capture star trails. I have tried and you can do it but the trails from planes present a problem in cities.

Taken at Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay, Australia.

Thanks for visiting. I am very grateful for all the kind comments and faves.

The Star on the corner of Macy's (formerly the Bon Marche) is an icon in Seattle.

Shot with a Fisheye lens with Photoshop correction even though the image was processed in Lightroom. I like the CS 5 fisheye correction better than the correction in Lightroom.

“Stars, too, were time travelers. How many of those ancient points of light were the last echoes of suns now dead? How many had been born but their light not yet come this far? If all the suns but ours collapsed tonight, how many lifetimes would it take us to realize we were alone? I had always known the sky was full of mysteries—but not until now had I realized how full of them the earth was.”

went to check out the perseid shower with my fellow flickr peeps, which was pretty cool. figured, while i was stargazing at 2am, i might as well try some star stacking (this was my very first attempt).
