93 or so stacked 30sec shots. taken with crappy 18-55mm canon lens. processed in photoshop. Hoping to get some better star trails this summer now that I have a better wide lens. (Tokina 11-2mm 2.8)

Stars above Emerald Bay. I went up to Tahoe to fly my paraglider and ride my bike this weekend. The supermoon was in the sky so I figured my chance of photographing stars was grim but I set my camera up near Eagle Falls anyway. I fell asleep next to my camera as it took 167 shots 30 sec each at f2.8 and iso 640. I was awoken at 4:50 am to a group of tourists on a photo tour to shoot the sunrise. At first this noise annoyed me but when I saw the view I was glad to be conscious. Stay tuned for the sunrise!

This is the final one from Monday night. Another 2 exposures blended, 1 for stars and one for lighting, I think I'm getting better at these, who needs the moon?

I'm just back from a mammoth trip round the island so I wanted to get this one uploaded before I start going through the new ones, I saw it all tonight, moor fires, northern lights, flying cop cars and angry guys with firey heads, phew I'm off to bed.....................

Congrats to Star for winning the prize from #AdamsPhotoChallenge this month. She got a pretty picture done by meeee. I'm so proud of this - I've been lucky enough to get to know Star for a little while now, and I couldn't be happier with the way this turned out. She's beautiful, inside & out. ♥

And so it would be that on one Friday night a few photographers ventured out into a cold Friday night to capture a previously visited scene. And so it was that I rode away with this 10mm shot. So wide is this lens that I had to clone out the shadow left behind by my tripod. And so cool this is. Enjoy and good weekend to all :-)

Star Trails along the highway..shot on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

A 5 hour long exposure, I had combined about 600 photographs of 30 secs each to get this.

the stars in a field

What a magical night this was. The stars were amazing and we had a front row seat, in what seemed to be our own personal Planetarium, but this was the real thing. The night was a warm 64 degrees, perfect if you ask me. Definitely a night, I won't soon forget!

37/52 Still Lifes: Stars

This is 200 x 30 second exposures stacked in photoshop. The images were imported into photoshop by 'file > scripts > import files to stacks' This imports all the images into one file as different layers. I then changed the blending mode of each layer, except the last one, to 'Lighten' to allow the brightest elements of each layer to show through. That's pretty much all i had to do.

The settings for the individual shots are;

16mm

f4

iso: 1600

30 second exposure

5 sec interval

recorded as small jpg for ease of processing on the other end so i tried to get as much as possible right in camera.

Low light pollution and clear skies in Maui made for some wonderful opportunities for night photography during my Sept 2014 trip. Getting up at 3 in the morning to see sunrise at Haleakala was bit of a tough proposition for both me and my wife as neither of us do well with sleep depravation. So we decided to check out sunset instead. I haven't seen a sunrise to make a comparison but I thoroughly enjoyed the scenic drive up to the top of Haleakala as we were greeted by low hanging clouds, lush greenery and a light drizzle on our way. We saw a beautiful sunset from the top Haleakala and my wife braved the near freezing cold in the car to allow me to spend a couple of hours after sunset for some night photography. I had wrapped up shooting some star trails over the city lights when I got down to the parking lot and saw this scene. The only other car in the parking lot had just roared into life and was about to leave. The reddish light on the mound and on the watch tower are from the rear red lights of this car. I took the opportunity quickly shoot the Milky Way while the foreground was lit red by the car lights.

"floating here

like this with you

underneath the stars

aligned

for 13 billion years

the view

it's beautiful

and ours alone tonight

underneath the stars

spinning round

and round with you

watching shadows

melt the lights

so shining

from our eyes

a tear

another space is ours

alone tonight

watch as shadows melt

the waves, break

the waves, break

whisper in my ear, a wish

"we could drift away so far"

your voice

inside of my head

like this

it's infinite

the hours alone tonight

we could drift away...."

What i like the most about astrophotography is that there´s some magic in capturing the stars. Being out there at night with all the weight of the universe over your head is always an overwhelming experience.

Star trails over Possum Kingdom State Park, Texas, March 14, 2014.

This is another experiment taking photos of star trails this time using a Pentax K-1 and a Pentax 15-30 mm lens. Unfortunately, after about 35 mins the sky became cloudy so the trails are shorter than I had hoped for. (The next few days the weather got worse.) However, I achieved the best colour in the trails that I have so far. The colour of the trail varies depending on the star's temperature. White and blue stars are the hottest and red the coolest. The two cloudy (blurred) patches are the Magellanic clouds - galaxies associated with the Milky way. Thanks to Stephen Mudge for confirming this.

Like A Star

Just like a star across my sky,

just like an angel off the page,

you have appeared to my life,

feel like I'll never be the same,

just like a song in my heart,

just like oil on my hands,

Honor to love you

This is a necklace made with Swarovski crystals that my daughter had hanging from the mirror of her car the other day. The sunlight was making beautiful patterns on the crystal. I decided to play around and add sun flare to the photo.

Star Trails over sheep at Tra na Rossan Bay, Downings.

I am starting a Star Wars story about Jak Olsen, a Jedi Padawan in the Clone Wars. Chapter 1:

I sat down on the smooth granite bench, breathing steadily, gazing into the sparkling fountain. I came here to the Room of a Thousand Fountains often to meditate and relax. In fact, it was my favorite place in the Jedi Temple. I was anxious today because Master Shek Cambor had ordered me to meet him in an hour. Master Cambor had been watching me at my lessons and trainings for a month, seeing if I was to be his apprentice. As I sat there, clearing my mind, I felt the tension drain away.

I sensed my friend approach long before he stood next to me. I opened my eyes, glad to see my friend, Padawan Dev Rylonda. He was a year older than I, and had been chosen by his Master a year ago.

"I knew I could find you here. Are you nervous?" He asked me.

"No. I was this morning, but mediating here helps." I replied. I checked my watch and stood. "I had better be going. Master Cambor told me to meet him in 5 minutes."

He laid a hand on my shoulder. "May the force be with you, my friend." Dev said.

"And with you." I replied. Then I headed off at a brisk pace to meet Master Cambor...

I love the smell of this! And I love a good bowl of pho (which is where I use star anise).

This one's not from the dark sky that my recent posts have been from. Just decided the other night to try some star trails so I set my camera on a tripod in the backyard and set the interval timer and went to bed. This shot represents 6 hours of the Earth turning beneath the stars.

One thing to note, Polaris, the North Star, is not exactly lined up with the Earth's rotational axis. It is about a half degree away from the pole. Because of this, for astrophotography at least, it is not accurate enough to align your telescope's mount to Polaris for good tracking.

I boosted the saturation a little in this one to emphasize the wide range of colors displayed by the stars. (Also, for any nit-pickers out there, no I didn't take or subtract darks, so yes, there are plenty of hot pixels in there.)

The star covered dome of the Trinity Cathedral towering over the city of St Petersburg.

The Trinity Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is a late example of the Empire style, built between 1828 and 1835 to a design by Vasily Stasov. The cathedral, which can accommodate up to 3,000 visitors, has only recently begun to be restored to its pre-Revolutionary splendor after years of neglect.
