I was out walking one night, when I happened to run into a group of friendly, fallen stars. They seemed a little lost, and just wanted to find their way back home.
Just some fun with light-painting. And granted, "falling stars," are not, in fact, stars. It's just a fun concept and myth to play with though.

My first attempt at creating star trails. I think I need to go further away from the city to really make this work.

A night long exposure shot of stars with passing cloud, with mountain range and a mist covered valley. Long exposure taken from Hotel Cemara Indah next to Mt Bromo.
Mount Bromo, is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, in East Java, Indonesia. At 2,329 metres, it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known. The massif area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.
An image from two years back when I used to do Star Trail workshops.
A star trail is a type of photograph that utilizes long-exposure times to capture the apparent motion of stars in the night sky due to the rotation of the Earth.
With modern digital cameras is it relatively easy to get decent startrail-images.
Instead of taking one long exposure one can take many shorter exposures and combine them in Photoshop. However, I prefer the single shot approach as seen here on this 45min exposure.
Settings:
- Bulb Mode
- ISO200
- 35mm Focal Length
- f5.0

Star Spirals in the Changthang Desert, Ladakh.
There are nights when the upper air is windless and the stars in
Heaven stand out in their full splendor around the bright moon;
When every mountaintop, headland, and ravine starts into sight,
As the infinite depths of the sky are torn open to the very firmament.
Homer's ILLIAD, Book VIII
(Chapman Translation)

Long exposure shot 1hr+ .. You need to first find and fix the position of the North Star/ Polaris (approx) to get the complete spiral as the other stars in the sky rotate around it but the North star itself remains static in the sky relative to the earths rotation. shot on a tripod, you can also use a polarizer to reduce the noise levels
During this trip to Ladakh I took a lot of star spiral shots as the skies were the clearest I've ever seen them to be and it was near the time of the Harvest Moon when the moon is the brightest in the sky...
Star Chamber, Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.
This was shot at 4:30am this morning under partly cloudy skies in Valley of Fire. I framed this small arch against the heavens with my Nikon 14-24mm. This is a 10 minute exposure at F8, ISO 400. I used the car light from my jeep to bounce light off another sandstone wall illuminating the arch for around 2 minutes during the end of the exposure.
The Star of Hope is an old Shipwreck along the sands between Ainsdale and Formby.
Been waiting patiently for the right morning and tide for around 6 months now, Has to be right on an ebbing low tide, and some decent light with the morning sun in the right position so was pleased with the conditions this morning. For a wreck arround 130 years old, she is not in bad nick.
2 Lee ND Grads used on this 0.6 soft and 0.6 hard.....
Some info on this shipwreck for those interested
The Star of Hope flounded off the Mersey Estuary in 1883.
She was built at the Stephen and Forbes boatbuilding yard at Peterhead and was launched in 1865. In the late 1800's it was normal that Vessels would be expected in the Mersey given that they had been spotted rounding the top West corner of the Welsh coast and the details telegraphed to their owners :
The Southport visitor records :
A telegram says – The German Barque the Star of Hope was known to be off the Mersey, where distress flares were seen. Nothing has been heard of her since. A further report says the crew of the Star of Hope are aboard the Crosby light ship. The vessel must therefore be wrecked.
While travelling back to Queenstown, i stopped along the Devils Staircase to snap a photo of the view of the stars.
A late night look at Mt Hood from popular Trillium lake. Seems I have not done any daytime photography for sometime now!
Happy Tuesday and hope everyone has a great week!
This is a 24 minutes exposure, enough to show some star trails over the Vajolet Towers... mirroring into a very ordinary and modest puddle ...
Slightly visible just above the towers the Milky Way trail of light.
On the right you can see the refuge Re Alberto (Gartlhütte), 2.621 meters .... exactly on its chimney: Jupiter's trail :-)

Stars over Mount Edwards taken from Sperry - Glacier National Park. The image is a composit of 400 frames taken over 3 hours and 20 minutes.
First try at doing star trails. I used StarStax to blend the multiple shots. The free software made it very easy.
