The abandoned "Grand Canyon" ride, Spreepark

The Lightning spree ride.

From 1969 to 1989 Kulturpark Plänterwald was open for business, the only theme park in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Post-reunification many state run institutions, including Kulturpark Plänterwald, were put up for private sale. Norbert Witte and his wife Pia bought the park, and it reopened as Spreepark Berlin. Visitor numbers reached 1.5 million a year and new rides were added. The park’s fortunes declined, and in 2001 was forced to close due to large debts. Witte moved with his family to Peru, intending to open a new park in Lima called Lunapark. Norbert and his son, Marcel, were caught trying to smuggle cocaine from Peru to Germany in one of the theme park rides, and were both sentenced to time in jail. Norbert apparently now lives in a trailer on the park, whilst his son is still in a Peruvian prison.

The park has now fallen into disrepair, offering bait to many who trespass though the wire fences. There are still regular public tours and we saw many visitors taking the train around the site. (Photo tours, Longer history)

Another dinosaur in the park that got destroyed for fun by people sneaking into the compound.
