TEXTURE LESSON: ~ View On Black dedicated May 28, 1968.

Both of my parents were teachers, so I discovered early, that sometimes those who teach are in a position to learn the most. That feels like a fairly truthful sentiment to me. I like to teach others as I learn so much in doing so. “What goes around, comes around,” that sort of thing.

Part of the wonder of Flickr is finding such exquisite imagery created by so many artistic, skilled and creative photogs/artists. Another part of the Flickr magic is the inspiration I receive from viewing and studying their works. Then there’s the good part: the opportunity to either try to figure out what they did and how, or conversing with them and getting some tips as to the techniques used.

All of this helps me to grow as an artist: giving me more to use and share with others.

These Flickr artists are not sharing their secrets for me to steal, as there are no secrets to steal in this artist’s life of ours – not the way I see it, anyway. They are sharing their spirits.

One may steal a technique, but one cannot steal the art that comes from the soul or spirit of another. I can only take some of the brush strokes from their hands and see what becomes of them in mine. And when this is done with the artist’s permission and aid, as one learns with the aid of one’s teachers, my wellspring of individuality and depth grows. Is this not how humanity has developed?

Master Paul Grand; masterful artist, possessed of superb vision, sublime spirit, exquisite imagery, unerring instincts. www.flickr.com/photos/paulgrand/

www.flickr.com/photos/paulgrand/3950128431/

He wrote a short tutorial on his texture work. It was an epiphany for me. It was short, direct and to the point – with examples. All of these damn photo textbooks should be so succinct and direct. Thank you, Paul. I used ihis lesson on this new image above.

flypapertextures.blogspot.com/2009/09/mist-in-trees-tutor...

“For this misty mountain top landscape,

I used just two flypaper textures,

Raw Linen @ Linear burn setting 46% and opacity at 63%

although I liked it, I didn't need the texture, so I blurred it with Gaussian blur for a smooth finish.

Necropolis was used in Overlay @ 55%, Opacity 56%”

* * *

A most elegant, stylish treatment that worked wonderfully for me. I have now added another, subtle, layer technique to my texture work and style.

I thought I’d share it with you flickr guys who see this. Photographed at Barney’s, Channel Lake Boathouse, Sept. 2009.

I used two differing textures courtesy of artbychrysti:

Handmade natural paper: www.flickr.com/photos/chrysti/2244697503/in/set-721576040...

Cotton journal paper: www.flickr.com/photos/chrysti/2245495918/in/set-721576040...

As Paul quickly showed, there is much one can do with “blending options, blending modes, % of use and % opacity, and color sliders” either as top layers or under layers.

Wandering about with Carl: he fished, I photographed - he didn't catch anything, but I got this. :-) . Exposure set for -1/3 reading on sky, with hand-held flash - held off camera- (with soft cover filter) for ramp and pole fill. Fill flash moved left, right, up, down.

Sunset at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, in Rio de Janeiro- its such a beautiful lagoon (also known as "the Heart of the City) - all both tourists and "local" clubs are there ... with a view of Corcovado, a dream place - a place of delight for residents and visitors, where the Xmas Tree is put up - I took this "selfie" . (under not "perfect conditions:)) ;::)) for it was my way to pay homage to so much natural beauty and peace I felt in that amazing city - which at the moment is going tru so many problems due great floods - many are homeless, some dead, well the "Cidade Maravilhosa" is suffering a lot - this is for all of them.

I had the rare pleasure of meeting 100+ relatives at a family reunion last week. I not only got to meet the extended family (my husband's side,) I had tours of homes that have been in the family for 100+ years. What an adventure!

I also rarely post a photo that hasn't been doctored with treatment 'n texture, so this feels new to me too. :~}

Conversations with other flickr artists about textures and texture use – technical and philosophical – have been coming up recently. Quite exciting and intriguing conversations, they have been. ~ View On Black ~

Texture test #2 using flypaper textures: flypapertextures.blogspot.com/2009/09/flypaper-tex-box-1_...

The gist of it is: “Why textures?” And, for me, “well, why not?” alone, is a most reasonable response. Textures are here. And while simply "being here" may not work for all things in life, just "being here" is worth a look-see in art.

The more I learn about textures and get comfortable with them, the more I find myself looking back to some of my older flickr images. The concept of textures didn’t exist in my mind when I captured these, but, I’m finding it intriguing to look at them now with textures as an option.

There are now new artistic opportunities for an image that was of the “nice try, but no cigar” category: properly composed, exposed, colored and processed, blah, blah, blah. The kind of image that is but one of a hundred just like it, that one can find on Flickr on any given day.

Now such images have a fighting chance to find a new artistic life - in addition to a photographic one. Don’t get me wrong, textures don’t make bad images good, but it can provide an outlet for “good” images to get better; or at least uniquely styled and affected (adj.). The finished image (can an image ever really be “finished?” :-) ) may be similar to others, but, if done well, it will bear the artistically unique touch and vision of the individual behind it, and avoid getting lumped in – and lost – among all the rest.

And don’t, for a moment, think that each of us - at a certain artistic level - doesn’t want our images to stand out on the screen like a beacon of light. Only a crazy person, or a forgerer, wants their work to look just like everyone else’s.

Well, that’s my story (for the moment, anyway) and I’m stickin’ with it. :-)

This is my favourite beach .. at Meco: dedicated to my MORGY--- I go there to relax and also with all my beloved dogs as well as friends. I was very happy to share this with my friend, thanks for homage to Morgy by Semmi (who was here and met her and all my sea and blues) .IRENE- ..

Usually when I walked with my dogs my Morgy (who has passed away last Friday) loved to run into the water so I had to rescue her from the waves ... both she and I love this place; this is my way to homage my most beloved dog, a sweet and gentle creature who will live forever in my heart and those who met her.

This is for my dearest friend ITALA, a very special person to thank her for her visit and all the laughters, wise words and generosity; this shot was taken on our last evening together the stunning last lights before a delicious gourmet dinner by the seaside and a night of fun. A moment of joy we shared at Guincho (winds were strong!).

As the song says I really have always been happily "chasing rainbows" all my life... and still do! - this picture was taken in the center of Lisbon - a lovely rainbow (out of the blue) - and you can see the typical old palaces of the center of the city (Baixa) - so as we go into a new week and month I send you this rainbow and a bit of Lisboa. We are all living uncertain days but dream we must. Wishing you all to find your "bluebird ... somewhere or someway". Enjoy!

A view of Lisbon from "above" - the rooftops in the center of the city - here you see the "Baixa" - in consideration for Unesco World Heritage site mainly refbuilt after the hearquake of 1755; it is the "heart" of the city - here the old city meets the Tejo River as well as the most typical parts of the city. In June 13th the Festivies of S.Antonio (the city patron) make this part a big party - I advise to visit it once at least - you can find all sorts of accomodations!:.)) I would like to think this is more about art than mood; more about the semi-conscious than the sub-conscious.

I feel fine. At least I think I do. ~

But if mood moves the artist’s hand – what then be this?

There is wilt and decay; but also clouds and light; rain (or tears?) and hints of flight.

How do we interpret the dreams rendered within?

By dark or by light – by day or by night?

Or, perhaps, I am simply feeling "artistically complicated or complex" today.

Do I know? Do I Care? Do I care to know? Or, is it simply... “much ado…”

"...ah yes," he continued, curled lips drawing briefly on the tag end of a cigar that, in this rain, resisted staying lit, "it would seem that all the complexities of the universe, and its unyielding emptiness too, are to be found in a dream about a single, wilted petal of a dying plant."

"Perhaps when we awake," said the Companion, " its meaning will be far less ambiguous."

"Oh, let us pray not," said he. "Awakened, we are accompanied only by mundane, uninspired daydreams of abject desire; minor keys in the Key of Life. No, that would not do. Daydreams are far less entertaining, and never quite as spiritually outrageous or disarmingly subtle as the meanderings of a mind at sleep."

A residual ember, buried deep within the cigar in the only possible dry space imaginable, yielded a small mouthful of acrid smoke, which he savored briefly and then exhaled with exaggerated purpose and exquisite slowness. The shapes in the smoke that lingered in the air, seemed to form any image one could wish, or need, to imagine.
