Ålesund is entirely on island. That the center of the town is on three islands, Nørvøya, Aspøya and Hessa, is easy for everyone to see. Ellingsøya and a few small islands are also easily to spot. But that the rest of town, including the shopping area on Spjelkavika, is on an island, most people don't realise befoore they are told.

And here is the reason. The more than 100 sq km island Oksnøya, is separated from the mailand by this narrow sound. to the right is a "sea" that is approx.100 times 150 m, and then comes a new sound is almost as narrow and as long, and crossed by a bridge. The tidal current is so strong that if you notice the bridge you have a feeling it is a river passing under you.
