Canadian Pacific train No. 177 descends Kicking Horse Pass exiting the west portal of upper Spiral Tunnel at Yoho, British Columbia, on September 16, 2002. The westbound train is pulled by three matching Multi-mark CP Rail SD40-2s—Nos. 6010, 5666 and 5817.

An eastbound train leaving Field climbs a moderate hill, goes through two short, straight tunnels on Mt. Stephen, under the Trans-Canada Highway, across the Kicking Horse River and into the Lower Spiral Tunnel in Mt. Ogden. It spirals to the left up inside the mountain for 891-m and emerges 15-m higher. The train then crosses back over the Kicking Horse River, under the highway a second time and into the 991-m tunnel in Cathedral Mountain. The train spirals to the right, emerging 17-m higher and continues to the top of Kicking Horse Pass.

The westbound Royal Canadian Pacific luxury passenger train drops downgrade between the Spiral Tunnels on Kicking Horse Pass at Yoho, British Columbia, on September 20, 2002. Powering the train is CP FP7 No. 1400, FP9 No. 1401, and GP38-2 No. 3084.

This Baldwin 2-6-0 mogul steam engine - builders #7717 - road #6 - 36" gauge locomotive, was built for the North Western Coal & Navigation Co. in 1885. It was originally used to carry bituminous coal on a narrow gauge railway which connected the CPR mainline with the coal mines near Lethbridge. In 1893 this railway track was converted to standard gauge, causing a surplus of these narrow gauge engines. This engine was purchasd in 1907 for the construction of the CPR Spiral Tunnels in the Kicking Horse Valley. When the construction was complete in 1908, this engine was abandoned here.

Walter Wilcox was a Yale college student whose passion was the wild beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Hired by explorer Tom Wilson to help map the area around Lake Louise, Wilcox set out in August 1899 in search of a new route up Mount Temple. For two days he endured rain and snow, but on the third day the sky cleared. Invigorated by the sun, Wilcox hiked up the valley to the top of a pile of rocks. There he discovered a splendid sight - "a narrow, secluded valley with a small lake enclosed by wild rugged precipices... one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen."

Wilcox named it Moraine Lake after the moraine, or rock pile, deposited by the Wenkchemna Glacier. He was later to write that, "no scene had ever given me an equal impression of inspiring solitude and rugged grandeur", adding that his time spent contemplating the view was the happiest half-hour of his life.

The next year, Tom Wilson cut a trail from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake. In 1902, the Canadian Pacific Railway constructed a trail of it's own and before long a carriage road was built. A teahouse was established at the site as early as 1908. The CPR built a new teahouse in 1912 and three enterprising women - Miss Eileen Strick, Miss Barbara Dodds and Miss Marjorie Danks - established tent facilities and a log cabin refreshment and souvenir stand. In 1922, the women built four sleeping cabins. By this time, a proper road had been constructed and opened to the public. The original teahouse was replaced and additional cabins were built in 1923, 1939 and 1941.

The CPR sold Moraine Lake Lodge in 1959 to Brewster Transportation. The Brewster family immediately sold it to Bill and Barb Smythe, who operated it for 15 years. The next owner, Jack Divinsky, ran the lodge until 1985 when Art Davis assumed operation of the resort. In 1991 Art Davis sold the lodge to David Hutton and Nancy Stibbard.

Redevelopment of Moraine Lake Lodge began in 1988. Arthur Erickson, one of the world's most famous architects, was commissioned to design a new lodge and cabins. His challenge was to build a facility that would blend with the environment while accommodating overnight guests and approximately 4,000 visitors per day. The result is magnificent. Day users and overnight guests have distinct areas for their enjoyment - the library for instance, serves as a congenial common room where overnight guests can relax after a hike, meet other travelers and read quietly by the fire. At Moraine Lake Lodge, people are inspired to enjoy each other as much as the natural beauty surrounding them. As Walter Wilcox was the first to observe, a half-hour or a week spent in this setting can be the happiest of a lifetime.

Kicking Horse Pass is a high mountain pass at 1,627 m (5,338 ft) across the Continental Divide of the Canadian Rockies on the Alberta/British Columbia border. The main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was constructed using this route in 1884. CPR opened a pair of spiral tunnels carved into the mountains in 1909 to replace the steep more direct route. Although these tunnels add several kilometers to the route, the ruling grade was reduced from 4.5 percent to a more manageable 2.2 percent. Print size 8x10 inches.

At the summit of Kicking Horse Pass, crossing the continental divide, CP 2816 makes a spectacular sight heading west into British Columbia at the head of GW Travel's epic 2008 round trip between Calgary and Vancouver.

Between the seasons at Albula viaduct I. The wooden bands of the toboggan run have not yet been dismantled, the pass is still closed, or only open to Preda. This is also the place where the railway line disappears into the crest tunnel after several spiral tunnels. Hardly anyone comes here at this time of year.

Here comes the first scheduled train of the day, leaving Bergün at 6:30 am. Because of the very low number of passengers here at this time it is actually more of a freight train. In contrast to at least three freight cars, only one passenger car is carried.

This 4.5 km (2.8 mi) drive branches off Mt. Norquay just before the Banff/Norquay overpass and takes you along the three Vermilion Lakes. This drive provides an opportunity to see a variety of flora and fauna common to marshland areas and is popular for bird watchers, nature enthusiasts, photographers and cyclists.

The historic Kicking Horse Pass between Banff and Yoho National Parks is one of the most important passes in the Canadian Rockies for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The famous Spiral Tunnels on the CP Rail Line were opened on September 1st, 1909. The route called for two tunnels driven in three-quarter circles into the valley walls. The construction and extra track effectively doubled the length of the climb and reduced the gradient to 2.2%. Unfortunately, the view obscured by vegetation. – Kicking Horse Pass, Yoho National Pass, Canada.

To mark the inauguration of the Swiss Museum of Transport in 1959, the railway and model

railway enthusiasts of Lucerne built a model representing the Gotthard north access ramp

between Erstfeld and Wassen.

They put in around 30,000 hours of voluntary work.

Ascending the mounting through helical tunnels – the Gotthard railway model shows Erstfeld

station, the two imposing bridges over the Chärstelenbach and the Intschireuss and finally the

three helical tunnels near Wassen.

The model does not show the motorway since it depicts the landscape as it was around the

end of the 1950s.

However, the locomotives and carriages making up the model trains are in some cases

considerably newer.

The Swiss Museum of Transport is grateful to the railway and model railway enthusiasts of

Lucerne for the newly designed 2007 Gotthard railway model in the rail transport hall as well

as for its loving and expert maintenance. The show runs every hour and lasts 8 minutes.

Many images are your typical "touristy" shots...It would take a lifetime I think to capture the amazing beauty of this area in "the right light"....Sigh....The different variations of turquoise & emerald green waters....I shall go back again sometime...maybe an Autumn trip. Definitely a sunrise location because the sun sets behind the Mountains & I have not been much of a sunrise gal lately....:-)

Climbing CP's big hill one mile from Cathedral siding Aug 16, 2010. The 2816 has just cleared the lower Spiral Tunnel and is heading to Yoho and the upper Spiral Tunnel. Wapta Mountain and the Yoho Valley form an impressive backdrop here.

The Tower of Babel was named such by Walter Wilcox as it reminded him of the biblical rendition that reached into the heavens. In reality, this is not such a massive feature by Canadian Rocky standards. This quartzite spire is however much better known than the mountain named after it, Mount Babel, which is directly behind (south) of the tower.

Mount Babel takes its name from the much lower "Tower of Babel," the top of which is over 700 metres below the summit of Mount Babel. It was a huge rockfall from the Tower of Babel which formed the dam which holds back Moraine Lake.Walter Wilcox had thought when he named the lake that the rocks were carried forward by an advance of the glacier in the valley and left as a terminal moraine.

This view was created by using the focus stacking technique, 3 views of the same train are possible from the same location at Giornico on the Italian side of the Gotthard route. Quite a sight to behold as the train winds its way down the hillside.
