Some clouds and rain had soaked the area on the days before I went to this scenic barn near my house in southwest Virginia. As the clouds broke, some crepuscular rays were shining down in different spots. I waited for a while hoping that the sky would break and light up the barn and trees in front of me.
I feel like my waiting wasn't in vain.

Winnie and I went for a drive around the valley. This was taken about 30 seconds down the road from my house.
Made it to explore! Yay!

The New River looked deceivingly shallow from the shore. Only a few steps in I was in well above my waist trying to cinch my backup up and keep it from dragging in the water.
Phillips Creek Recreation Area is part of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. It is located along Rt. 671 on the North Fork Pound River Lake near Pound, Virginia.
I've driven past this hundreds of times, each time vowing to someday stop and take a picture. Well, the other day I did it. With a film camera, all I had when the impulse at last was too compelling to resist.

sunny then cloudy then sunny again all day long. we get to the baseball field for the first game of the season, and then the heavens pour themselves out fifteen minutes before game-time.
I was having a somewhat stressful drive down 81 south on my way home from work the other night. When I hit exit 98 I decided to veer off the road and take the scenic route home through Bland. It was nice. I believe that a lot of this farmland is part of the Department of Corrections here. There are a handful of signs that say 'No Tresspassing by order of the Warden".

Mabry Mill is a watermill located at milepost 176.2 of Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, Virginia. The mill was built in 1903 by Edwin Boston Mabry (E.B. Mabry). It was first a blacksmith and wheelwright shop, then became a sawmill. By 1905 it was in operation as a gristmill. By 1910 the front part of the mill was completed and included a lathe for turning out wheel hubs, a tongue and groove lathe, a planer and a jig-saw. Between 1905 and 1914 E.B. Mabry bought adjacent tracts of land, mostly for the purpose of acquiring more water power.
A sign in the back of the building mentioned a structure built for the mill operator of a long-since-gone mill. A sign in front described it as a slave cabin transported and re-assembled from elsewhere on the Preston estate. Hence I am not entirely sure for whom the building was designed.

I drove to the top of Poor Mountain in the rain yesterday hoping to catch some fog shots from the mountain top being in the low overcast sky. About the only things up there are the broadcast towers for many of the television and radio stations around the Roanoke Valley. It was quiet, cold, deserted and a little spooky.
The devil's bathtub is a local swimming hole frequented by many locals. Its one of several deep clear cold water pools carved into the limestone by the fast moving waters. Its located in Scott County VA in rural appalachia. The day I visited, the trailhead was packed with cars. Turns out, many families were making a day of it - young and old alike. It was nice to see families having fun splashing in the cold waters. The "tub", as its called is quite a cool feature. Its about 10-12 feet long, 4-5 feet wide, and about 7+ feet deep. Teenagers were daring each other swim the length. Apparently, the cold water prevented many from staying in more that a minute.
This photo is a 3-image layer that masks the dark features to bring out the light in the deep pool and underneath the ledge on the right.
Looking forward to getting back here in the Fall.
Thanks for looking!!
Took a short hike through the Falls Ridge nature conservancy today, then checked out the waterfall. I was able to get a better composition of the smaller flow, above the main drop of the falls as I hurried to snap a few shots.
Finally got around to posting some of my September shots from the beautiful Virginia Creeper trail in Southwest Virginia View On Black
"Praise for the sun, the bringer of day, he carries the light of the Lord in his rays...
The heavens are telling the glory of God. And all creation is shouting for joy! Come, dance in the forest, come, play in the field,
And sing, sing to the glory of the Lord!"
