Watching BBC's "Russia with Simon Reeve" brought me back to the memorable summer time traveling along the Trans-Siberian Railway, Russia :ru: in 2017

“You’ll love Baikal !” claimed the boy sitting opposite me. Slava, a 13-year-old Russian came from Khabarovsk, the second largest city of the Russian Far East.

Accompanied by his mother and younger sister, he was heading for his mum’s maternal homeland, the city Ulan-Ude not far from Lake Baikal, for a summer vacation. My Trans-Siberian train car was at that time packed of kids of all ages heading to their summer destination with parents.

Slava told me that Baikal Lake is the most beautiful place he’d ever known and the place he would move to live when he grow up. After several days spent chitchatting onboard, we exchanged farewell hugs when our train stopped at Ulan-Ude station.

Had Slava ever known, that Baikal Lake was one of the main reasons I’d ventured on this Trans-Siberian journey?
