I traveled to China for business in 1996, just before Hong Kong was turned over to China. During this trip, I worked out along a road that ran up a mountain side where construction was going on. I found this piece of granite, which was subsequently polished, and kept it as a souvenir. The soapstone cylinder is a wax seal that supposedly has my name etched on the bottom. I somehow suspect it really says "Stupid camera-toting American has no idea what I'm engraving". LOL!
BTW, HMM!
A hand-painted black and white soapstone bowl, rotated 180 degrees in post-processing. making it sort of an optical illusion.
According to Inuit tradition, spirit helpers are beings with supernatural powers. They were conjured up by people who talked to animals, and by shamans, when they required additional help in times of great need. This sculpture by Inuit artist David Ruben Piktoukun depicts one of many faces of the Ugyuk Spirit Helper. This soapstone sculpture is in the Native American Collection at the de Young Museum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
Hope you have a great day whenever you see this. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments.

We had an excellent visit to Soapstone Prairie Natural Area last Thursday evening after work. This view is from just off the road exiting the area looking towards Rawhide Power Plant off in the distance on the horizon. This view really shows off the expansive vistas that define part of why I love this area.
Shot Notes: single exposure, very little post.

Soapstone carver Joey Pynn works his magic on the sidewalk at the corner of Water and George Streets weather permitting. On this day he was carving a polar bear with a seal which will take him something less than a week to complete. Some of his larger pieces require up to 3 weeks of hard work.

Another view from the rim at Soapstone Prairie Natural Area looking into Red Mountain Open Space in NE Colorado. What a gorgeous place, we are quite lucky to have forward thinking local governments that have led an effort to purchase these two areas (32,000+ acres) for the enjoyment of future generations.
To date the Laramie Foothills Project has conserved over 55,000 acres (85+ sq. miles) to help protect this wonderland of ecology and history. The entire Laramie Foothills area is full of imperiled species and also boasts a rich human history going back to 9,000 B.C., a special place well worth saving.
