oatmeal honey pancakes. the recipe calls for molasses but i don't like the taste here, i think honey works better, and is milder. i make these pancakes about once every two weeks, and freeze the leftovers for future mornings. the fact that they're light, tender, and yet so much more filling than normal pancakes sends them over the awesome edge for me.
...secretly i think i just want kim boyce to hire me to photograph her next cookbook.

Making these brioche chocolate chip pretzels. They were pretty great, especially straight out of the oven.
Frozen milk with whiskey in it may not make th most compelling photograph ever, but I would just like to let everyone know that this milk punch is amazeball and you all should go make and drink some.
so I baked a cake.
Smitten's grapefruit yogurt cake to be exact.
With just a few changes to suit what I had at home.
It's just about gone. (we had help!)

Sadly, I do not have a selection of cute and quaint restaurants and coffee shops to go to like Lucy, so I have to make my own. I also have black countertops, only white dishes, and a dark and gloomy kitchen, so my food photography creativity has met its match....
This is cinnamon-chocolate chip sour cream cake from smitten kitchen. If you love chocolate you need to make this cake. I almost went into a chocolate induced coma after a couple bites.....

Doing another roots and wings shot (not sure what you'd call this one--roots or wings or both!). I will have to work on reflection shots over the next few days! Last night I dreamt I was running around with Tiff (a.k.a. freeplaylife on Flickr). We were wearing striped socks and heels and she gave me some delicious apple cake that she had just baked. I've never had apple cake but it sure tasted good in my dream. Decided to bake one today and wear striped socks and heels just for Tiff (and how could I not add the crazy polka dot apron too?). Found this recipe called Mom's Apple Cake and it was yummy! If you try it, you might watch it. I cooked it 10 minutes less than recommended and it still burnt a bit.
mmmmmmm..... thith ith thooooooooo good....... oh, excuse me... This is SO GOOD. Blackberry buttermilk cake. Find it here smittenkitchen.com/2009/05/raspberry-buttermilk-cake/ Simple, simple, simple. And delicious. I drizzled a powdered sugar glaze over it, and I subbed in blackberries for the raspberries (and used frozen cause I would have had to take a second mortgage out on the house to be able to afford a cup of fresh blackberries this time of year)..... Make it now.
I'm trying to document my baking a bit more this year, so here you have one weekend's rather ambitious results: raspberry pie bars (Mom's recipe), Blueberry Boy Bait, and Kiwi Ice (from a Taste of Home cookbook).

I couldn't find dutch process cocoa, and ended up using regular (but organic) cocoa. They seemed to turn out just fine, and didn't last long at the BBQ I took them to.

I will make just about anything by Smitten Kitchen. When I saw this recipe go up and it was farmer's market day up the street, I instantly changed my baking plans and made this easy cake/pie/cobbler with fresh strawberries. It would be great with any mix of berries or stone fruit.

I made these with skim milk. Yum!
I bought some Buffalo China (think that really thick, smooth creamy ceramic that the best late-night waffle house/diner/restaurant mugs are made out of) custard cups/smooth ramekins. So I made some sweet petites, inspired by the lovely Deb at SmittenKitchen.
Two lilliputian plops of Haagen-Daz vanilla frozen yogurt, and it was a very nice way to spend the afternoon.

I was racing the sun to take these shots, and was only able to get the 'before' shot because the sun went down before the pizza was done cooking. This was my first time cooking with figs--couldn't find fresh ones so I used these dried ones instead. It was delicious! Can't wait to try this with fresh figs.
Roasted garlic and onion jam as the base, with caramelized onions, figs, prosciutto, fresh thyme, shaved parmesan, grated pecorino romano, plenty of salt and pepper, a drizzle of honey and a drizzle of olive oil. Dough recipe from Smitten Kitchen. Go make this, please.
I love this. I said "take a picture of that" and he did (my hands were too messy to come near the camera for several hours) and I love this shot and it was a total team effort. Yay.
srsly. this is the best cake and I'm not even that crazy about chocolate or peanut butter.

. for breakfast . strawberry scones still warm (used this recipe but replaced cream by 3/4 cup skimmed milk) + strawberry shake made with fresh strawberries and soy "milk" .
. para o pequeno-almoço . scones de morango ainda mornos (usei esta receita mas em vez de natas usei 3/4 cup de leite magro) + batido de morango feito com morangos frescos e "leite" de soja .

in between i worked on a freelance project
being a freelancer again, being able to work in the city and the country
feels just perfect to me
long missed qualities of life are back
