Simplygeeky and I went to Silver Lake Mill yesterday afternoon to take photos of swans. It was about 40 minutes before sunset when we got there, so the sun was already low enough to cast warm light across the water.
Since I've already subjected you to Christmas pugs all week, I've decided to change my modus operandi and show you LOTS and LOTS of swans. More to come...

There are several Silver Lakes in California. This one is located on Highway 158, about halfway around the June Lake Loop that leads to and from Highway 395 in Mono County.
Silver Lake is nestled deep within the heart of the Sierra Nevada at the base of Carson Peak, California Route 158 known as "Carson's Camp," and it has been famous for quality mountain recreation since the 1920's. The Rush Creek Trailhead is located at the north end of the lake, providing trail access to the Rush Creek Basin, The Ansel Adams Wilderness and Yosemite National Park.

I don't want to wait anymore I'm tired of looking for answers
Take me some place where there's music and there's laughter
I don't know if I'm scared of dying but I'm scared of living too fast, too slow
Regret, remorse, hold on, oh no I've got to go
There’s no starting over, no new beginnings, time races on
And you've just gotta keep on keeping on
Gotta keep on going, looking straight out on the road
Can't worry 'bout what's behind you or what's coming for you further up the road
I try not to hold on to what is gone, I try to do right what is wrong
I try to keep on keeping on
Yeah I just keep on keeping on

The silver-gray foliage of this interesting plant creates a beautiful setting for the magenta/purple blossoms. One popular name is Dusty Miller, which is very confusing because so many plants share the same name! I hunted for the botanical name (see tags) in hopes of lessening the confusion a bit. As far as I can tell this is a Silver-washed fritillary. I was quite lucky as he stayed in the same area for quite a while and came back again when he was chased away by other butterflies so I got quite a lot of shots of it. This is my favourite one.

22/31 orange in July
Let my soul, a shining tree,
Silver branches lift towards thee
Where on a hallowed winter’s night
The clear-eyed angels may alight.
And if there should be tempests in
My spirit, let them surge like din
Of noble melodies at war
With fervour of such blades of triumph as are
Flashed in white orisons of saints who go
On shafts of glory to the ecstasies they know.

Blue hour reflection at Silver Lake on the June Lake Loop in the Inyo National Forest, CA. This was taken near the end of fall colors on 10.30.15.
I’m back from my Adirondack adventure – great week full of rocks, water and sky with lots of woods and wildlife thrown in. The weather was a bit temperamental – rained all but the first full day, especially evenings and mornings, with sprinkles throughout. There was some question as to whether it was only raining in the “bowl” containing Silver Lake, since once we moved on from there the skies cleared some.
This is my first photo upon arrival after 12 hours driving 650 miles, taken about 8:30PM. No tripod – that was still buried in the car somewhere, and I didn’t want to miss the gorgeous light for a minute. Had to rush to get to the Adirondack “camp” before dark because the little driveway was hard to find, then 1.5 miles down this winding, twisting, up and down gravel path to the Adirondack style rental aptly called Latitude 44.5. This driveway prevented me from wondering the area after dark, but I got early starts each day.
Silver Lake is a beautiful, crystal clear, natural body of water nestled in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mtns, New York. It is surrounded by Silver Lake Mountain, Douglas Mtn, and Alder Brook Mtn. The “camp” did not have a telephone, and cell service was not available. Enjoyed the wildlife, but did not get decent photos. Every night and morning we were treated to the eerie calls of the Loons. A mink with a fish appeared less than a foot from my foot to stare at me, but my camera was on the tripod so I just stayed still and enjoyed the moment.

The clear, icy and swift Ohanapecosh River tumbles over Silver Falls (40') as it flows from its headwaters in the glaciers and snowfields high up on the sides of Mt. Rainier.
Friday's here. Enjoy!
This butterfly is our largest fritillary and gets its name from the beautiful streaks of silver found on the underside of the wings. The bright orange male is quite distinctive as it flies powerfully along woodland rides, pausing only briefly to feed or investigate anything with an orange hue that could be a potential mate.
Silver Falls State Park is such an amazing place. When I visited I only had half a day free so I was only able to scratch the surface of what the park had to offer. I’m heading back in May and will do it right next time and spend a couple of days there.
This is a late afternoon shot of the South Falls, taken in mid-October when some golden fall colors had just started to arrive.
Stumbled onto a weird little spot with Asume. Fat caps, silver and some scraps were the ingredients. Mine feels a little noodly...
During our Mammoth Lakes landscape photography workshop in early June, 2009, I took my group here for a beautiful sunrise at Silver Lake on the June lake Loop in California's Eastern High Sierra. The lake surface was almost like glass. I took this shot a few days before the workshop, on a scouting trip.
During the workshop, we had a similar morning but I was busy with my students and did not take any shots. I helped the students to photograph this scene as the sunrise painted the peak with different light and alpenglow.
I think all our my students got similar shots. The mountain is named Carson Peak.

The Silver Forest Trail is a short 2 mile out and back hike that starts just South of the Sunrise Visitor Center. It’s an easy trail with great views of Mt Rainier. I think it would be a great spot to catch the wildflowers too when they’re in season. Check it out if you’re looking for something short and easy especially if you have little ones with you.

This is south falls at Silver Falls State Park. It is the largest falls in a series of waterfalls there. It is 177 ft from the top to the splash pool below.
Enjoy the view and have a wonderful week. :-)

I, I just took a ride on a silver machine and still feeling mean
Oh, do you want to ride, see yourself going by
The other side of the sky? You gotta know where I've been
And it flies sideways through time, it's an electric line
To all the zodiac signs
I got a silver machine
(Silver machine)
I got a silver machine

I got a silver machine

In my silver machine
It flies out of a dream, it's antiseptically clean
You gotta know what I mean
Oh, do you want to ride, see yourself going by
The other side of the sky in a silver machine?

Silver hour at Derwent Water. An overcast sunset resulted in silvery light over Derwent Water near Keswick.

I was not sure if this was a male Red-crowned Ant Tanager, or a female Silver-beak Tanager. I was leaning towards the 1st option, but I got in touch with Asa Wright Nature Centre for identification, which is where this picture was taken, and they confirmed that this is in fact a female Silver-beaked Tanager.
The male Silver-beaked Tanager's beak is swollen at the base and appears to be a glistening silver in the field. Without sunlight shining directly on it, this bird appears to be black. However, when in the light, it looks as if it were maroon-coloured velvet. One can see its bright crimson chest and throat. The female of this species is far less impressive with a black beak and dull reddish-brown feathers. They can be heard at dawn singing “che-wa” for its human and avian friends. It eats fruits of Melastomaceae, other small shrubs and several bromeliads. It will occasionally drink nectar and will also feast on insects.
