Tap Mun is a small island at the mouth of Tolo Channel. Around the anchorage on the island a small town developed in the eighteenth century, centred on a fine old Tin Hau Temple, which serviced the needs of the local fishermen and villagers. The temple is currently rated as Grade 1 historic building. Other temples (dedicated to Kwun Yam and Kwan Tai ) date from 1788. Surrounded by deep water, the island is a good anchorage for fish boats anchored here that brought prosperity to the town. Other attractions on the island include Balanced Rock, Tap Mun Cave, Lung Keng Ken, etc. The island is also famous for abalone; many visitors come for the scenery and seafood during holidays.

Most people like set up camp in Tap Mun and there are a lot of cattles too.The local public security is good, extremely little has the criminal case to record.

 

塔門是吐露港赤門海峽的一個小島,在十八世紀,島上天后碼頭一帶開始聚集成市,並以天后古廟為中心,廟內奉祀天后娘娘,保祐島上漁民和村民平安;該廟已被評為一級歷史建築物。另外,島上亦建有觀音廟及關帝宮,興建年份可追溯至1788年。塔門四面環海,水深海闊,吸引漁船集泊於此;1950年代,往往有五、六百艘漁船聚集,帶動市集各業興旺,一片繁榮。島上其他名勝計有呂字疊石、塔門洞、龍頸筋等。土特產方面,尤以塔門鮑魚,遐邇馳名。

 

而喜歡享受寧靜鄉間生活者,可在弓背山坡搭帳露營,當地治安良好,極少有罪案紀錄。

The intricate vault and columns of the Glasgow University Gilbert Scott building cloisters. During my years at the university I always knew it as the 'main building', rather than the Gilbert Scott.

 

On my way through the gates I asked the guy in the security office if it was ok to bring a tripod. He told me it was fine but that the university would sue me if I published any photos I took. I think he was joking, but just in case I'm hoping Flickr and Facebook don't count as publishing, as my team of fancy big-city lawyers are busy with several dozen PPI claims I have on the go.

Larry Talbot, guest writer on this flickr site, has given me permission to use some of the images I've taken of him.

 

Here he is, kicking back in his palatial open air living room. He has a mansion now, tucked away in a sheltered spot somewhere on cliffs overlooking the Black Sea. I have never asked him where he made his fortune, although I have heard rumors it involved Crazy Glue, chickens and vast quantities of mattress ticking. (Frankly, I'm not sure I want to know any of the details.) Anyway, Larry tells me that in this image the breezes were blowing and the guitars were rocking as he listened through his prized Bose earphones.

 

"My manservant, Olaf took it," Larry told me. "I was listening to ZZ Top's Tush."

 

Then he told me "This is EXACTLY what my face looks like."

 

I told him "Well...yeah, Larry. it's a PHOTOGRAPH of your face."

 

He just shook his head like he'd known all along I would never, indeed could never, understand. "No...no...no...Mr. Dorky Von Dweebermeister. This is a depiction of what good music feels like as it washes over the male spirit. The processing: the selective blur, the blend of drawing and photograph...the intensity on the face! It's all part and parcel of the same FEELING."

 

Larry illustrated his words by waving quivering fingers in a dramatic fashion a few inches away from his body, like there was a life sized vertical harp there. Since he was wearing a voluminous crimson robe at the time, it looked a little silly to me. Larry paused to take a sip of a deep red liquid from an exquisitely crafted goblet before settling back into his chair with a satisfied sigh.

 

I was still smarting over that 'Mr. Dorky Von Dweebermeister' shot, so I fixed him with my very blankest stare. (Larry hates the whole passive aggressive trip...which is why I do it. Grant me the small pleasures, will you?)

 

But Larry just rolled his eyes and passed me a disc with this mini-essay on it. He told me he wrote this opus some years ago, as you can tell by the historical reference to Dancing With The Stars.

WHY MEN SECRETLY LOVE TO DANCE

Nothing stirs a male soul (okay...THIS male soul) like a great guitar riff or a smoking drum solo. As long it's just you and me here and you PROMISE not to tell anyone...let me tell you a secret. Men LOVE to dance...as long as we're alone and better than 50% convinced there are no security cameras watching and/or recording us.

 

But when we're in public it's a different proposition altogether.

 

Yikes!

 

In public people can SEE us.

 

While on the inside we may feel like John O'Hurley on Dancing With The Stars we’re convinced we look more like Jerry Lewis. We are watching our dance partner carefully in case she is either embarrassed or trying to contain gales of laughter.

 

Every guy remembers being twelve…

 

(This is where I need you, dear reader, to envision pages of a calendar spinning and ripping off in a "time tunnel" wind while violins play an ethereal tune to show that we are going back...back in time.) Are you with me?

 

Okay.

 

I am standing beside all the other 12 year old guys, dutifully supporting my portion of the gym wall, looking at the girls on the other side of the gym who are doing much the same thing.

 

A few of the popular kids are dancing along with a handful of brave souls who just don't care what anyone thinks. I am standing there beside Brad Dennison and Dean Thorpe (who my friends and I call Dean "Throw-Up" cause some gags just never get old). My eyes are fixed on Jennifer Patterson.

 

There's an angelic light shining on her from above. It highlights her golden hair, her soft blue eyes and those two coma shaped dimples that appear only when she smiles.

 

Jennifer Patterson sits two seats in front of me in Mrs. Hall's third period math class and well - Jennifer Patterson just smells SO good.

 

"Go on," Brad dares me. "Ask her."

 

I have confided the secret ache in my heart to both Brad and Dean Throw-Up against my better judgment.

 

"Yeah," urges Dean. "She's just, like, standing there."

 

My heart starts to pound and my vision blurs. My cheeks are burning and I begin desperately hoping they can't see it.

 

Brad gives me a little push and what amounts to an encouraging nod.

 

I step backward, grasping desperately for my safe patch of wall, which Dean Throw-Up moves quickly to occupy.

 

I shoot him a venomous look. What are they doing to me?

 

Brad shoves me again and hisses "GO!"

 

My feet are carrying me across the gym and I can feel hundreds of eyes burning into my back as the guys note one of their own breaking away from the herd. I can only see the girls on the other side of the gym looking at me with the beginnings of smiles forming in their eyes.

 

I am considering planes crashing into the ground trailing black smoke. I am thinking about car crashes complete and public humiliation. The end of my life. I can hear the blood pounding in my ears and my knees are a little weaker than I'd like.

 

I briefly consider walking right by Jennifer and continuing on to the bathroom, where I will very likely throw up.

 

But a madness seizes me.

 

Suddenly I am standing in front of Jennifer with a bowling ball in my throat.

 

The DJ starts to play "Albert Flasher" by the Guess Who.

 

My lips move wordlessly.

 

Jennifer Patterson cocks an eyebrow.

 

All of her friends are looking at me. I can feel my friends looking at me.

 

I croak...something.

 

I put out my hand and Jennifer takes it and we go out to the dance floor together. (God bless Jennifer.)

 

Every man's life has a Jennifer Patterson in it somewhere.

 

We dance secretly because we suspect that if we did it in public we'd be accused of having standing seizures. We are 79.44567% certain that there are hundreds of critical eyes fixed on us. We fear looking stupid in front of the women and dread giving ridicule ammo to our fellow men.

 

Does that mean that we won't do the happy Snoopy dance when Golden Earring's Radar Love comes on and we're CERTAIN we are alone? Of course not. We will. It’s just like that ‘tree falling in the forest when there’s no one there to see it.’ You’ll never know for sure because you'll never be there when it happens. Not ever.

 

We're also likely to throw in a little air guitar and even a few air drums to demonstrate to our own souls that we do indeed, have the music in us, and no – we’re not as old as that little snot bag packer at the grocery store seems to think we are.

 

So yeah. We dance. Sometimes we do it in the shower…sometimes we do in in the office…sometimes we do it in our minds.

 

Now you know.

 

Just don’t tell anyone. Or I WILL find you.

Marriage and Divorce is an Age-Old Problem

 

Why is it that we can be married as easily as we can be divorced? Getting married and having children is easy (for many) but then comes the more challenging times. Marriage starts off with passion and being head over heals in love. Later, when marriage goes right, that passion and love develop into a love of caring, respect, friendship, kindness, compassion, fondness, trust and romance. Children need that security and with that security comes a strong family basis which lasts forever. However, unfortunately that is not always the case, and people grow apart during the child rearing stage. Too often people do not invest in a great deal of time to work things out and compromise but give up and go about their own ways.

 

In order to make a better world we should try and find out ways to keep marriages together and find happiness. Life is not easy singly or married, however marriage is something that has to be worked at all the time by both parties, it is like anything else in life, the harder you work at it the more rewarding it can be.

 

Divorce is heart wrenching for the whole family. The couple is miserable and requires outside help to go through the process. It is most stressful for children and can result in psychological and behavioral problems. Basically children need a solid and positive relationship with both parents even after divorce.

 

I wish I had a solution to this huge problem that is worldwide.

If I am posting this shot, then something has gone wrong with our vacation. We should be in Myrtle Beach enjoying the last bit of our vacation. Unfortunately that is not the case. This is from our one morning at the beach during a 4 night stay that resembled a movie script from National Lampoon's Vacation Movie.

 

Here is some of the wonderful events that unfolded:

 

One hour into the trip our dog got sick and smelled like vomit the rest of the 14 hours we drove with her.

 

3 hours into the trip, the bike rack cracked the bumper on the camper and the bikes had to be attached to the Suv rooftop via tiedowns, a process that took an additional three hours to sort out.

 

Finally we get to the campground, with moments to spare before they shut down for the night, only to find our campsite (reserved this spot six months in advance), can you guess...yes..occupied. An hour and a half later and approaching midnight, they find us a campsite. It's the rejected campsite of the people who took ours.

 

We realize overnight possibly why. Camped next door are people with two dogs. Their names are Yippee and Yappy. They live up to their names by barking all night, and all day!

 

Just as the camper is set up and Al starts the suv up to unhitch. The battery in the suv is dead.

 

Saturday is spent fixing the SUV issues.

 

The lights in the camper start going wonky and dimm and flash on and off.

Never even had time to address this issue.

 

Sunday is our grace day, We are feeling better now, lulled into a false sense of security. We visit with some family and have an enjoyable day. Even shoot the sunrise. Yaay, not much drama in the sunrise, but glad to finally see the beach!

 

Monday is our move day, we have reservations to move to our dream campground down the road. Al is busy fighting with the bikes again. He Falls off a step stool and breaks his foot!!!

 

Stick a fork in this vacation. We spend the next day in the ER, and packing to come home.

 

Yikes..what a vacation!! Pass on that kind of vacation again!

Walter P. Chrysler and his architect William Van Alen used good old fashioned chicanery resorting to Trojan Horse tactics to achieve the goal of the owner of Chrysler Automotive Corporation ultimately desired to have the world’s tallest building when the Chrysler Building was completed. A rival edifice was being raised on 40 Wall Street as the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building that was to be the tallest in the world which today bears the name of the current commander and chief Donald Trump aka the Trump Building. The Chrysler Building’s distinct spire was added late in the process covertly and assembled literally inside the upper floors so that Bank of Manhattan would be unaware of the finishing touch. It was raised up and crowned Walter P. Chrysler’s building which even today bears hood ornaments on periphery of its spire. Completed on May 28th, 1930 it became the first man-made structure to surpass 1000 feet in height at 1048 with 77 floors the tallest building in the world. It would only retain that crown 11 months as an even larger building rising up on 34th Street replacing the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel which was moving up town where it is today. That was the Empire State Building that was completed ahead of schedule in 11 months.

Originally like many of the high rises planned and designed in the roaring 20’s, the Chrysler Building featured an observation area at its pinnacle which has been closed for ages. Also an exclusive restaurant in its upper levels also closed for many many years. These buildings were never designed or built with the world we live in today in mind as far as pedestrian traffic and security. The Empire State Building down on 34th has gone through multiple iterations of layouts to handle patrons who wish to go to its observation deck and the deck at 30 Rockefeller was closed for many years until a proper way of getting patrons up to its open observation area was put together. In both cases for those two buildings unused office space and retail space was converted to waiting and customer areas. Whereas One World Trade Center and 30 Hudson Yardd (opening later this year featuring the highest open observation deck in New York City) were designed from the ground up with today’s heightened security in mind, the current owners of the Chrysler Building have no intention and do not see any possible profitability in such a venture as well. Considering that it’s being engulfed on all side by taller buildings like the huge 1 Vanderbilt Tower seen in this picture that’s probably a wise financial decision. Sadly this view from Long Island City’s Gantry Park is one of the few unencumbered views where you can see the beautiful upper stainless steel Art Deco masterpiece. In my opinion, still one of the loveliest building in the City of New York.

Space was extremely limited due to heavy demand and the heavy publicity going on for at least 5 whole minutes before the big moment. So, there were a total of 3 lucky attendees including Jim Patterson, Kendra Karr, and me. Once the paparazzi were cleared from the beach by the security team, and the the airspace was cleared of helicopters, we shot the breeze for a while and then got down to business. Also, this was a 100% chimping-free summit!

  

This is the new wheel that was installed after the old one was sold on eBay for US $132,400 to an Oklahoma developer sight unseen! See this photo with the old wheel for more information. This is a very high-tech wheel with programmable lights that can create patterns and images. Also, it is powered by the solar panels you see in front of the wheel.

The good news is that the wheel changes colors and patterns every few seconds. So every shot looks completely different it seems. The bad news is that you only get about 10 minutes where the light is even enough to get a decent exposure across the entire frame. That is the brief period when the lights are bright, but not too bright and there is light in the sky. The other bad news is that it takes about 7 minutes to fill up the wheel with passengers before it spins 2 or 3 times and then stops again. So I really only got a few minutes during the entire evening where the wheel was in motion and the light was good at the same time. Still, I managed to get a few nice ones!

 

Thanks goes out to Jim for saving my water shoes from a danger-filled trans-Pacific voyage initiated by a quickly rising tide!

THE POSITION OF THE WEST ON THE QUESTION OF RELIGION

 

Confronting this development in the twentieth century of our Christian Era, the Western world stands with its heritage of Roman law, the treasures of Judaeo-Christian ethics grounded on metaphysics, and its ideal of the inalienable rights of man. Anxiously it asks itself the question: How can this development be brought to a standstill or put into reverse? It is useless to pillory the socialist dictatorship as utopian and to condemn its economic principles as unreasonable, because, in the first place, the criticising West has only itself to talk to, its arguments being heard only on this side of the Iron Curtain, and, in the second place, any economic principles you like can be put into practice so long as you are prepared to accept the sacrifices they entail. You can carry through any social and economic reforms you please if, like Stalin, you let three million peasants starve to death and have a few million unpaid labourers at your disposal. A State of this kind has no social or economic crises to fear. So long as its power is intact – that is to say, so long as there is a well-disciplined and well-fed police army in the offing – it can maintain its existence for an indefinitely long period and can go on increasing its power to an indefinite extent. In accordance with its excess birth rate, it can raise the number of its unpaid workers almost at will in order to compete with its rivals, regardless of the world market, which is to a large measure dependent on wages. A real danger can come to it only from outside, through the threat of military attack. But this risk grows less every year, firstly because the war potential of the dictator States is steadily increasing, and secondly because the West cannot afford to arouse latent Russian or Chinese nationalism and chauvinism by an attack which would divert their well-meant undertakings into a hopelessly wrong channel.

 

So far as one can see, only one possibility remains and that is abreakdown of power from within, which must, however, be left to follow its own inner development. Any support from outside at present would have little effect, in view of the existing security measures and the danger of nationalistic reactions. The absolute State has an army of fanatical missionaries to do its bidding in matters of foreign policy, and these in their turn can count on a fifth column who are guaranteed asylum under the laws and constitution of the Western States. In addition the communes of believers, very strong in places, considerably weaken Western governments’ powers of decision, whereas the West has no opportunity to exert a similar influence on our rivals, though we are probably not wrong in surmising that there is a certain amount of opposition among the masses in the East. There are always upright and truth-loving people to whom lying and tyranny are hateful, but one cannot judge whether they exert any decisive influence on the masses under the police regimes.*

 

In view of this uncomfortable situation the question is heard again and again in the West: What can we do to counter this threat from the East? Even though the West has considerable industrial power and a sizable defense potential at its command, we cannot rest content with this, for we know that even the biggest guns and the heaviest industry with its relatively high living standard are not enough to check the psychic infection spread by religious fanaticism.

 

The West has unfortunately not yet awakened to the fact that our appeal to idealism and reason and other desirable virtues, delivered with so much enthusiasm, is mere sound and fury. It is a puff of wind swept away in the storm of religious faith, however twisted this faith may appear to us. We are faced, not with a situation that can be overcome by rational or moral arguments, but with an unleashing of emotional forces and ideas engendered by the spirit of the times, and these, as we know from experience, are not much influenced by rational reflection and still less by moral exhortation. It has been correctly realised in many quarters that the alexipharmic, the antidote, should in this case be an equally potent faith of a different and nonmaterialistic kind, and that the religious attitude grounded upon it would be the only effective defense against the danger of psychic infection. Unhappily, the little word “should”, which never fails to appear in this connection, points to a certain weakness, if not the absence, of this desideratum. Not only does the West lack a uniform faith that could block the progress of a fanatical ideology, but, as the father of Marxist philosophy, it makes use of exactly the same spiritual assumptions, the same arguments and aims. Although the Churches in the West enjoy full freedom, they are not less full or empty than in the East. Yet they exercise no noticeable influence on the broad course of politics. The disadvantage of a creed as a public institution is that it serves two masters: on the one hand, it derives its existence from the relationship of man to God, and on the other hand, it owes a duty to the State, i.e., to the world, in which connection it can appeal to the saying “Render unto Caesar . . . “ and various other admonitions in the New Testament. In early times and until comparatively recently there was, therefore, talk of “powers ordained by God” (Romans 13:1). Today this conception is antiquated. The Churches stand for traditional and collective convictions which in the case of many of their adherents are no longer based on their own inner experience but on unreflecting belief, which is notoriously apt to disappear as soon as one begins thinking about it. The content of belief then comes into collision with knowledge, and it often turns out that the irrationality of the former is no match for the ratiocinations of the latter. Belief is no adequate substitute for inner experience, and where this is absent even a strong faith which came miraculously. People call faith the true religious experience, but they do not stop to think that actually it is a secondary phenomenon arising from the fact that something happened to us in the first place which instilled πιστι into us – that is, trust and loyalty. This experience has a definite content that can be interpreted in terms of one or other of the denominational creeds. But the more this is so, the more the possibilities of these conflicts with knowledge mount up, which in themselves are quite pointless. That is to say, the standpoint of the creeds is archaic; they are full of impressive mythological symbolism which, if taken literally, comes into insufferable conflict with knowledge. But if, for instance, the statement that Christ rose from the dead is to be understood not literally but symbolically, then it is capable of various interpretations that do not collide with knowledge and do not impair the meaning of the statement. The objection that understanding it symbolically puts an end to the Christian’s hope of immortality is invalid, because long before the coming of Christianity mankind believed in a life after death and therefore had no need of the Easter event as a guarantee of immortality. The danger that a mythology understood too literally, and as taught by the Church, will suddenly be repudiated lock, stock and barrel is today greater than ever. Is it not time that the Christian mythology, instead of being wiped out, was understood symbolically for once?

 

It is still too early to say what might be the consequences of a general recognition of the fatal parallelism between the State religion of the Marxists and the State religion of the Church. The absolutist claim of a Civitas Dei represented by man bears an unfortunate resemblance to the “divinity” of the State, and the moral conclusion drawn by Ignatius Loyola from the authority of the Church (“the end sanctifies the means”) anticipates the lie as a political instrument in an exceedingly dangerous way. Both demand unqualified submission to faith and thus curtail man’s freedom, the one his freedom before God and the other his freedom before the State, thereby digging the grave for the individual. The fragile existence of the individual, the unique carrier of life, is threatened on both sides, despite their respective promises of spiritual and material idylls to come – and how many of us can in the long run fight against the proverbial wisdom of “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”? Besides which, the West cherishes the same “scientific” and rationalistic Weltanschauung with it statistical levelling-down tendency and materialistic aims as the State religion of the Eastern bloc, as I have explained above.

 

What, then, has the West, with its political and denomination schisms, to offer to modern man in his need? Nothing, unfortunately, except a variety of paths all leading to one goal which is practically indistinguishable from the Marxist ideal. It requires no special effort of understanding to see where the Communist ideology gets the certainty of its belief that time is on its side, and that the world is ripe for conversion. The facts speak a language that is all too plain in this respect. It will not help us in the West to shut our eyes to this and not recognise our fatal vulnerability. Anyone who has once learned to submit absolutely to a collective belief and to renounce his eternal right to freedom and the equally eternal duty of individual responsibility will persist in this attitude, and will be able to set out with the same credulity and the same lack of criticism in the reverse direction, if anotherand manifestly “better” belief is foisted upon his alleged idealism. What happened not so long ago to a civilised European nation? We accuse the Germans of having forgotten it all again already, but the truth is that we don’t know for certain whether something similar might not happen elsewhere. It would not be surprising if it did and if another civilised nation succumbed to the infection of a uniform and one-sided idea. America, which - O quae mutation rerum! (Latin: Oh, what a change of circumstance!) – forms the real political backbone of Western Europe, seems to be immune because of the outspoken counterposition she has adopted, but in point of fact she is perhaps even more vulnerable than Europe, since her educational system is the influenced by the scientific Weltanschauung with its statistical truths, and her mixed population finds it difficult to strike roots in a soil that is practically without history. The historical and humanistic type of education so sorely needed in such circumstances leads, on the contrary, a Cinderella existence. Though Europe possesses this latter requirement, she uses it to her own undoing in the form of nationalistic egoisms and paralyzing scepticism. Common to both is the materialistic and collectivist goal, and both lack the very thing that expresses and grips the whole man, namely, an idea which puts the individual human being in the centre as the measure of all things.

 

This idea alone is enough to arouse the most violent doubts and resistances on all sides, and one could almost go so far as to assert that the valuelessness of the individual in comparison with large numbers is the one belief that meets with universal and unanimous assent. To be sure, we all say that this is the century of the common man, that he is the lord of the earth, the air and the water, and that on his decision hangs the historical fate of the nations. This proud picture of human grandeur is unfortunately an illusion only and is counterbalanced by a reality which is very different. In this reality man is the slave and victim of the machines that have conquered space and victim of the machines that have conquered space and time for him; he is intimidated and endangered by the might of the war technique which is supposed to safeguard his physical existence; his spiritual and moral freedom, though guaranteed within limits in one half of his world, is threatened with chaotic disorientation, and in the other half it is abolished altogether. Finally, to add comedy to tragedy, this lord of the elements, this universal arbiter, hugs to his bosom notions which stamp his dignity as worthless and turn his autonomy into an absurdity. All his achievements and possessions do not make him bigger; on the contrary, they diminish him, as the fate of the factory worker under the rule of a “just” distribution of goods clearly demonstrates.

About:

I spent a few evenings scouting for decent locations to capture the Harvest moon of Sept. 23. I really wanted to get the moon coming up over the light house on George's Island but that would have been behind Pier 21 where the cruise ships dock and security won't let you in there especially people with cameras because of course we're all terrorists! :-(

Anyway, the two days leading up to the moon may have been better to shoot but each night when I got there the clouds were covering the moon until it was too late to get a dusk shot with the moon just above the horizon.

When the 23rd came I tried again and got pretty lucky with the sky but of course there were two cruise ships in and I knew they always depart around 7pm. Damn the timing would be close! In the end I liked this shot with the nose of the ship just entering the frame.

Oh yeah, in case you're interested; the ship is called Caribbean Princess.

I racked my lens out to the max to zoom in on the already huge moon. By the way, as you may know the full moon of September is the largest (closest to the earth) of the year and is known as the Harvest Moon because farmers used it's bright light to help them harvest their crops.

Karlos gave me a great idea - add a note for your country's flag!!

 

Occasionally, we are out and about when the lobbies of these great American skyscrapers are open, so we step in to take a few photographs. The designers and architects go to great pains to make these spaces particularly interesting as it is the only interior room that ALL visitors and tenants must visit. Naturally, there will be dramatic lighting, spaces and decoration - great photographic idea right?

 

Unfortunately, not always. The doormen and security guards are fiercely anti-tripod and sometimes anti-photography. I have yet to get a good idea of why this might be. It is, for all intents and purposes, a public space, and the more photos taken with a cam on a tripod the better the space will look! Some lobbies have specific rules, photos, no video - sometimes, the security folks just make something up - in this case it was photos, no tripod. Good thing for the high-ISO capacity of the D700 - handheld HDR is possible.

 

Perhaps next time we’ll just have to kill them with kindness until they warm up to the idea of a tripod.

Biography

 

Brian Hugh Warner (born January 5, 1969), better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is a professional musician. He is the lead singer of the industrial metal band that bears the same name. His stage name is formed from the names Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson.

 

Brian Hugh Warner was born on January 5th 1969 in Canton, Ohio. He attended Heritage Christian School. After transferring to and later graduating from Canton's GlenOak High School, Warner moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his family. While living in Fort Lauderdale, he studied journalism and theater at Broward Community College, and became the assistant entertainment editor of BCC's student newspaper, the Observer.

 

Romance

 

Warner's first serious relationship was with Melissa "Missi" Romero. As explained in his autobiography, during the production of "Antichrist Superstar," Missi became pregnant with Warner's child, but had an abortion during her second trimester. He has also been linked to Traci Lords and Jenna Jameson. Jameson wrote about her sexual encounter with Manson in her autobiography, How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale in which she noted him as being "massively endowed". Manson was engaged to Rose McGowan, but their relationship ended around the time he became involved with burlesque dancer and fetish model model Dita Von Teese. Manson photographed Von Teese for the December 2002 issue of Playboy. Manson and Von Teese wed in December 2005 in the Irish home of friend Gottfried Helnwein. Von Teese filed for divorce as of December 2006. The divorce came through in January 2007. In April of 2007, Marilyn Manson's girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood, admitted that they were actually a couple.

 

Marriage

 

Manson and Dita Von Teese started dating on Manson's 32nd birthday, and Manson proposed three years later on March 22, 2004. On December 3, 2005 (court documents say November 28), the couple was married in a non-denominational ceremony at Gurteen Castle in Kilsheelan, County Tipperary, Ireland, the home of Gottfried Helnwein. The wedding was officiated by surrealist film director and comic book writer Alejandro Jodorowsky. Dita Von Teese wore a royal purple silk taffeta gown by Vivienne Westwood, complete with train and petticoats worn over a Mr. Pearl couture corset, topped off by a tricorne hat by Stephen Jones, while Manson wore a John Galliano black silk taffeta tuxedo with velvet trim and a hat also crafted by Stephen Jones. They reportedly exchanged vows in front of approximately 60 guests, including burlesque dancer Catherine Delish, Lisa Marie Presley, Eric Szmanda, David Lynch, Jessicka and Christian Hejnal, and Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne. Vogue magazine ran a multiple-page feature on the wedding in its February 2006 issue. Just before his own wedding, Manson criticized Britney Spears' wedding to Kevin Federline, in which they celebrated by wearing personalized tracksuits: "If you're going to do something like getting married, it should have a sense of celebration to it. It should be grand and not in tracksuits!"

 

As of January 30, 2007 Manson and Dita Von Teese reportedly split after her filing for divorce due to "irreconcilable differences" according to Von Teese. ET.com along with People Magazine has claimed that Manson was having an extramarital affair with actress Evan Rachel Wood, which may or may not be the true cause of the split. Manson's alcohol abuse and distant behaviour have also been cited as cause for the split. It has also been claimed that Manson was not aware of Von Teese's filing for divorce and moving out of their home at the time that the story was published, conceivably due to his reported stay in Paris, France. Von Teese reportedly took their two cats and two dachshunds, Greta and Eva, with her when she left. Manson fought for custody of the two cats, but only received one of them.

 

Evan Rachel Wood attended the grand opening of Manson's new Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art and among the most notable artworks were two portraits of Evan. She will also co-star in his upcoming horror film Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll.

 

In music

 

Jessicka of the band Jack Off Jill was an early friend of Manson's, her band opened most of his South Florida shows. He not only produced most of the band's early recordings but also played guitar on the song "My Cat" and helped name the band. Manson later wrote the liner notes for the band's album Humid Teenage Mediocrity, a collection of early Jack Off Jill recordings.

 

In early 1993, after being instructed by his new label, Interscope Records, not to play any local shows, Manson formed Mrs. Scabtree. Mrs. Scabtree was a side project between he and newly hired Jeordie White. Manson played drums, while White (dressed as a black woman) shared vocal duties with then girlfriend Jessicka from Jack Off Jill who wore a blonde wig. Mrs. Scabtree only played two shows in South Florida.

 

Manson has helped or provided full scores for several major motion pictures, although several of his pieces have been cut, and his name dropped from the credits. Some of his more notable soundtrack score contributions include The Matrix, From Hell and Resident Evil.

 

Manson appeared as a guest on rapper DMX's album Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood for the track "The Omen", produced by Swizz Beats, and has performed (with the rest of the band) on stage with Eminem as background music in the song "The Way I Am".

 

Manson sang vocals on "Break You Down" off of the Washington, DC-based industrial rock band gODHEAD's 2000 Years of Human Error album. This album is distinguished for being the only one released on Manson's vanity label Posthuman Records.

 

In film and television

 

Manson made a cameo appearance as a doctor in the Murderdolls' music video "Dead in Hollywood", and also appears in the Nine Inch Nails music video "Starfuckers, Inc.", as well as "Gave Up", and Eminem's "The Way I Am" music video.

 

His first appearance in a film was in the role of a pornographic actor in David Lynch's Lost Highway, in 1997. He also had a minor role in former love interest Rose McGowan's 1998 film Jawbreaker and a supporting role in 2003's Party Monster, which is based on the events leading up to and the murder of Angel Melendez by the infamous Michael Alig of club kid fame, where Manson portrayed a psychotic drag queen named Christina . Manson made a cameo appearance in The Hire: Beat the Devil, a short film in the BMW films series (starring Clive Owen as the Driver), which featured James Brown as himself, and Gary Oldman as Satan. His most talked-about film cameo was in the Michael Moore political documentary Bowling for Columbine discussing the motivations of the perpetrators and allegations that his music was somehow a factor. He played himself, in animated form, on an episode of the television series Clone High, in which he sang a song about nutrition and the food pyramid. He is featured prominently throughout Not Another Teen Movie, and covered the song "Tainted Love" for its soundtrack.

 

His music is frequently featured on the show C.S.I.. The character on the show, Greg Sanders, is a big fan of Manson and the actor who plays him, Eric Szmanda, is a personal friend of Manson's.

 

Manson was featured in the 2004 film The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, and was set to appear in Abelcain, directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Living Neon Dreams in 2005, although both of these projects are still unreleased as of 2007. He will also be seen as a bartender in an upcoming vampire movie starring Lucy Liu called Rise and possibly has pending roles in Abelcain, RISE and other projects.

 

Manson has produced 23 music videos, most of which have gone beyond the scope of a normal performance video and been well received by critics for their imagery and direction. Manson’s three most recent released videos – Personal Jesus, (s)AINT and Heart-Shaped Glasses – were voluntarily funded with his own money (to a sum of $1,500,000) and largely not that of the record company. Manson stated in June 2006 that he saw himself "as more a student of film than of music".

 

In July 2005, Manson told Rolling Stone that he was shifting his focus from music to filmmaking - "I just don't think the world is worth putting music into right now. I no longer want to make art that other people--particularly record companies--are turning into a product. I just want to make art."

 

By 2006 Manson was working on his directorial debut, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, but has since put the project off until November 2007 to focus on recording Marilyn Manson's sixth studio album, Eat Me, Drink Me, followed by a world tour. The film is said to feature special effects using a magician rather than computer-generated imagery.

 

In graphic art

 

From the beginning Manson has been a recreational painter, the oldest of his surviving pieces dating back to 1995-1996, but it was after his 1998 Grey period that Manson began his career as a watercolour painter. In 1999 he made five-minute concept pieces and sold them to drug dealers with their knowledge that they would accumulate in value over time. Gradually Manson became more drawn to watercolors as an art form in itself, and instead of trading them, kept them and continued to paint at a proficient rate.

 

This manic creativity resulted in an exhibit for his art, The Golden Age of Grotesque, held at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Centre on between September 13 and 14, 2002. The reaction to his paintings was largely positive with one critic comparing them to Egon Schele's pieces and describing them as heartfelt and sincerely painted, and Art in America went as far as to liken them to the works of a " psychiatric patient given materials to use as therapy ". Others however saw less merit in the works stating that the value was in the celebrity.

 

Two years later almost to the day, during September 14 and 15, 2004, Manson held his second exhibit on the first night in Paris and the second in Berlin, Trismegistus, which was also the title of the center piece of the exhibit – a large three headed Christ painted onto an antique wood panel. Again the reception to the works could be described as mixed but was largely in favour of the artist.

 

Manson opened his own an art gallery, The Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art, on October 31, 2006 in Los Angeles for which his third exhibition (by invitation or appointment only after the opening night) was the inaugural show. From April 2 until April 17, 2007 Manson's recent works were be on show at the Space 39 Modern & Contemporary in Florida.

 

A coffee table art book is in the works, initially titled The Death of Art. The last given title was Quintif. It will be published by the makers of Flaunt magazine.

 

40 pieces from this show were ported to the Gallery Brigitte Schenk in Cologne, Germany to be publicly exhibited from June 28 until July 28, 2007. After this they will return to the Space39 Modern & Contemporary Gallery thus leaving Manson's own gallery in Los Angeles temporarily without his own work until 2008.

 

The price of Manson's works has been a somewhat controversial point for fans and critics alike, with most fans realistically unable to afford the paintings save for fine art editions and lithographs. Manson's prices though are realistic and reasonable considering the long-term value at a time when prices for contemporary art have never been higher.

 

During his European tour 2007 Manson has exhibited his paintings in Germany, Russia and Switzerland.

 

In other areas

 

Manson provided the voice of the alien Edgar in the 2005 first-person shooter video game Area 51, which also featured David Duchovny. Marilyn Manson also appears (as himself) as a playable character in the video game Celebrity Deathmatch. Allegedly, the artist posed nude for photos prior to his rise to fame. The pictures appeared in the March 1999 issue of Honcho.

 

Professional fallouts

 

Trent Reznor

 

One of Manson's high-profile relationships, the defunct friendship with Trent Reznor, has been marked with mutual bitterness and perhaps vendetta. This started in the mid-90s, when Manson was due to make a track that would appear on the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway, but instead Reznor was the one who wrote a song, "The Perfect Drug", for the film. In 1999, it seemed the two artists had patched their differences, as Manson made an appearance in the video for the Nine Inch Nails song "Starfuckers, Inc."

 

In 2004, Reznor was asked whether he had plans to do any covers; he sarcastically replied, "I was really hoping to do something unique and pertinent - like do an exact copy of "Personal Jesus" - but it was already taken."

 

In a 2005 interview, Manson said Reznor's Nothing Records had lost the master recordings of Manson's first three albums. He implied it was Reznor's intention, "Now that Nothing Records doesn't exist, I think there's only one of two people responsible for that. Out of those two people, there's only one that really has an opinion of me that is voiced very often."

 

Twiggy Ramirez

 

In May 2002 Twiggy Ramirez left the band, citing differences in perspective on the future of the band. He went on to play bass for A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails. During this time, Manson claimed in interviews that he and Ramirez were still close friends, while Ramirez maintained that he rarely spoke to Manson. In an interview in February of 2006 Twiggy stated he was willing to record an album with Marilyn Manson if the right conditions were met. In Autumn 2006, Manson and Ramirez were photographed together at numerous parties in Los Angeles, in amicable poses.

 

In January 2008 it was announced that Ramirez had reunited with the band as live bassist for the last leg of the Rape of the World tour as well as co-writer of the band's seventh studio album. In an interview with The Heirophant on January 11, 2008, Manson revealed that the reconciliation with Ramirez was not as abrupt as it initially seemed, and that the two had been occasionally communicating with each other since speaking at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California prior to the Winter European leg of the Rape of the World tour.

 

John 5

 

John 5's reasons for leaving Marilyn Manson were cited as being mutual, despite the mysterious nature of his sudden firing by Manson's manager in 2004.

 

John was quoted at the time as saying about the incident, "I don't know. . . I was nothing but nice to him," he continued. "I never screwed up onstage — well not really badly — and I did everything I could to get along with him. Maybe, just maybe, it had something to do with the fact that I don't drink or do drugs, and he's not like that at all. Maybe he held that against me. I don't know. He never said." John 5 was notorious among fans as being drug and alcohol free.

 

Before the incident, Manson had assaulted John on stage, notably, Manson kicked John in the face during a televised performance, leading to a brief confrontation in front of a packed and roaring audience (available on YouTube). This was during the intro to "The Beautiful People", when played at the Rock AM Ring 2003.

 

Also, during the tour John maintains that Manson spoke about matters other than business only once, "It was on my birthday, and he turned to me and said, "Happy birthday, faggot" — then walked away."

 

Despite this, John maintains he respects Manson, citing his skilled production style and his love for the band's music. John was already a fan of the band before joining in 1998. In response to a question regarding the reason for the split with Manson, John 5 was quoted by Vintage Guitar Magazine as saying, "(laughs) At the end of the last tour, I decided I really wanted to do this solo thing and that I had to devote all my time to it. The split with Manson was totally amicable. It wasn't one of those big breakups. We're friends. I wish there was some good dirt, but there's not (laughs)!"

 

In an interview prior to the January 19, 2008 performance in Orlando, Florida, Marilyn Manson revealed that John 5 would make a guest appearance during the show, stating: "I'll have [John] come on stage and play songs with us this first show. It would practically be the Holy Wood lineup." This guest appearance ultimately did not take place, however.

 

Madonna Wayne Gacy

 

Before leaving the band nothing was heard of Madonna Wayne Gacy for over a year. In an exclusive conference conducted by Marilyn Manson in April 2007, he revealed the upcoming album Eat Me, Drink Me was recorded in collaboration between himself and Tim Skold. Essentially this meant Gacy did not partake in the album, but not ruling out the possibility of him performing as live keyboardist on the upcoming tour. Later, Manson revealed that Chris Vrenna (who previously drummed for the band during Ginger Fish's hiatus in 2004) would be performing as live keyboardist on the tour, in Gacy's place.

 

On August 2, 2007, Gacy filed a lawsuit against Marilyn Manson seeking a back pay of $20 million dollars. Gacy claimed Manson has been using the band's money for personal interests, among which are his collection of Nazi paraphernalia, his drug addictions, his wedding with Dita Von Teese and the production of Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll.

 

On December 20, 2007, Manson countersued Gacy. As a reaction to the lawsuit Gacy filed against Manson in August, Manson claims, "keyboardist Stephen Bier did not carry out obligations to take part in master recordings [of Eat Me, Drink Me], concerts [of the Rape of the World tour] and the selling of band merchandise," according to this report which states that Manson is seeking unspecified general and special damages.

 

Insight

 

Even though he is known mostly for his music, which some refer to as crude and grotesque, Manson is a very intelligent and insightful man. In interviews he is always well spoken and is calm to the people who challenge him. Most people see his music as delivering the wrong message, but Manson states that his message was to be creative.

 

Causes

 

•In 2002, Manson worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make the wish of a boy with a life-threatening disease come true. 16-year-old Andrew Baines from Tennessee had a wish to sing back-up vocals for a "big" band; Manson jumped on the task and took Baines under his wing to make his dream come true. Manson invited Baines to the studio on August 27, 2002, where he let Baines perform backing vocals for the then-upcoming album, The Golden Age of Grotesque. "Yesterday, I spent the afternoon with Andrew, who reminded me the things I create are only made complete by those who enjoy them. I just want to simply say, 'thank you' to Andrew for sharing such an important wish with me," Manson said, according MarilynManson.com.

 

•In 2005, Manson donated a signed collector's edition mask to Music for Relief to help victims of the 2004's Boxing Day Tsunami; this auction raised $155.

 

•In January 2006, Manson contributed a hand-painted guitar from the Six-String Masterpieces - The Dimebag Darrell Art Tribute to the Little Kids Rock auction. For every $100 raised by the product, Little Kids Rock would provide one low-income child with an instrument and lessons – Manson's guitar raised $6,250.

 

•In 2006, Manson became a benefactor of Project Nightlight, an LA area foundation that uses short films, music, and apparel to grab teenagers attention and inspire them to speak out against sexual and physical abuse. Manson afforded Project Nightlight a stand at the opening of his art gallery, and in April 2007 gave the charity a print of his painting Eve of Destruction and a framed collector's edition mask.

 

Legal history

 

Marilyn Manson was first arrested in Florida on December 27, 1994 after a concert at Jacksonville's Club 5 for "violating the adult entertainment code." Manson was detained for 16 hours before been released without charge. Bizarrely police believed Manson had performed oral sex on stage with a man (when in fact it was Jack Off Jill vocalist Jessicka wearing a fake penis) and thrown either his or the man's penis into the crowd. On February 5, 2001 in Marino, Italy Manson suffered what is to date his only other post-concert arrest when he was accused of blasphemy having worn the outfit of a cardinal on stage during the song "Valentine's Day". Soon after the detention it was ascertained that Manson had not committed a crime and it appeared the legal troubles were over until the next day when Manson was arrested in Bologne on charges of public indecency relating to a 1999 show where it was alleged Manson had exposed his penis. Manson was released and the charges dropped, notably the arrests came a week after two teenagers brutally murdered an Italian nun which some less reputable sections of the Italian press blamed on Manson's music.

 

Sexual misconduct

 

In a civil battery suit, David Diaz, a security officer from a concert in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 27, 2000, sued for $75,000 in a Minneapolis federal court. After two days deliberation the jury decided that Manson's alleged molestation had been part of the show and that he had not overstepped his boundaries as an artist, ruling in favor of Manson and against Diaz.

 

Manson was charged with "sexual misconduct" on August 16, 2001 after Joshua Keasler filed a complaint that as he was providing security for a July 30 concert Manson had allegedly spat on his head, wrapped his legs around him and began to gyrate his penis along his neck.

 

Oakland County prosecutor David Gorcyca said that "It was offensive, crude and rude. This was not something that was orchestrated or choreographed as part of the act. The security guard was an unknowing and unwilling participant and, ironically, while he was there for protection... was sexually assaulted." The charge, punishable with up to two years imprisonment, was accompanied with a charge of disorderly conduct. The complaint came with an arrest warrant but Manson thwarted this by posting a $25,000 personal bond. In a one-day December 28, 2001 trial the presiding Judge dismissed the charge of "sexual misconduct" as Manson had in his view "gained no sexual gratification from the act." Manson pleaded "no contest" to the outstanding lesser charge, which carried only up to three months imprisonment, and was ordered to pay $4,000 in fines. After the trial Keasler pursued a civil lawsuit against Manson that was dropped when the two settled out of court in February 2004.

 

Lawsuits

 

•In 1997, former Marilyn Manson guitarist Scott Mitchell Putesky filed a lawsuit against Manson seeking unpaid royalties for his contributions to the band's output up to that period, including the band's recently released second studio album Antichrist Superstar. The case was concluded in 1998, although the outcome was confidential.

 

•On January 4, 1999, SPIN editor Craig Marks filed an assault and battery lawsuit against Manson in the New York Supreme Court. Marks alleged that Manson, upset at not making the cover of SPIN, the lawsuit specifically alleged Manson had yelled "I can kill you, I can kill your family, I can kill everyone you know!" before two of Manson's bodyguards were said to have charged him and held him against the wall and threw him to the floor after which it was alleged Manson had said, "That's what you get when you disrespect me." The case was dropped when, weeks later, Marks was fired from SPIN over financial irregularities.

 

•On April 2, 2002, Maria St. John filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court accusing Manson of providing her adult daughter, Jennifer Syme, with cocaine and allowing her to drive while under the influence. The case was settled out of court.

 

•On August 2, 2007, former Marilyn Manson keyboardist Stephen Bier filed a breech of contract lawsuit against Marilyn Manson seeking $20,000,000 in damages. Bier claimed Manson has used the band's money for personal interests, among which are his collection of Nazi paraphernalia, addictions to cocaine and Valium, his $300,000 wedding with and $150,000 engagement ring given to Dita Von Teese and the production of Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll as well as Lewis Carroll memorabilia, human skeletons and taxidermy. Manson's lawyers responded in January 2008 with a 101-page rebuttal of the claims, the case will be tried by jury in November 2008 in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

I'm still getting used to working with HDR, but I thought I would give this shot a try. This was taken on a rainy night a couple of weeks ago, just before Thanksgiving. I was shooting after the park had closed at midnight in New Orleans Square, and wanted to try and get Fantasyland before I left. As I headed up the trail by Big Thunder Mountain, a security guard approached me and said that Fantasyland was closed. Not being one to give up easily, I thanked him, went back down around through the area behind Rancho Zocalo, and took the side entrance to the castle. I knew that there had to be a few more folks in line for Peter Pan, and sure enough, Fantasyland wasn't entirely closed off. I set up my tripod and took shots as fast as I could as security was still around. In this shot, off to the left, there is a security guard in the shadows who either didn't notice me, or wanted to cut me some slack. In either case, I was grateful for a chance to shoot this area of the park after the crowd had left, seemingly alone in the rain.

No news, they say, is good news . . . let's hope so, and does not prove to be the calm before the storm. Tomorrow the Constitution Court will rule on the dissolution cases of the ruling coalition of the People Power, Chart Thai and Matchimathipataya parties. Tight security has been enforced around the court with police and military forces deployed to prevent protesters (UDD and DAAD, not PAD) from pressuring the judges.

Welcome to the new real world of cancer ~ the world of modern day pirates and sheer greed. In this world, the victims are cancer patients and its happening in every country around the world. Its a world where life saving cancer drugs are being horded by unscrupulous second market suppliers, called the gray market, and they are creating shortages in the regular marketplace in order to profit. In fact, the profits are so high they are grotesque. These unscrupulous dealers are holding hospitals and clinics hostage, marking up the critical medications needed as high as 4000 times their normal cost.

 

But it doesn't stop there. NHS patients in the UK are being put at risk because profiteering pharmacists are selling prescription drugs to Europe. As many as one in ten pharmacists, as well as wholesalers, dispensing doctors and even NHS hospitals are making money in an export trade worth an estimated £360million a year. Government guidance condemns it as unethical, but there is nothing ministers can do as it is entirely legal for drugs to be traded in this way within the EU.

 

Health Canada announced in August that more than a dozen drugs imported by several different companies may be indefinitely in short supply. This has resulted in forcing Canadian patients to take substitutes that could lead to more side effects or be less effective, according to experts. Some experts are particularly concerned by the new shortages because they involve a number of cancer drugs that can’t easily be replaced with other treatments.

 

In America, CBS News investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reports a record drug shortage has opened the door for gray market companies that expoit the short supply. They buy up drugs for everything from cancer to infections, stockpile them, then sell them to hospitals at massive markups.

 

Theft and diversion of drugs to the gray market often starts in the factories manufacturing drugs. Not all pharmaceutical companies make their own drugs, but outsource to factories where inadequate or even absent quality assurance checks result in the dispatching of a substandard or even counterfeit product. To make matters worse, the production of counterfeit drugs are often manufactured by small, backyard, cottage industries. For example, in China, the government closed 1,300 illegal factories and prosecuted cases involving counterfeit drugs worth more than $57 million in 2002.

 

Once drugs are transported to distribution centers or warehouses for final distribution to clinics and hospitals, the most common security breach involves what is called supplanting. This is where a pallet, or shipment crate, of drugs, or even whole shipping containers containing thousands of individual packets of drugs, are stolen and replaced by a fake or substandard product, and the stolen drugs are diverted into private sector markets.

 

The problem is that the grey market is working legally under the current drug distribution laws of all countries which mainly are a result of globalization, outsourcing and open access. For the past two years the problem is getting much worse and making many pirates rich. Just ask the hospitals around the globe who are solicited daily to purchase the much needed cancer drugs they cannot get from their regular suppliers at anywhere from 600% to 4000% markup!

 

Currently, the governments of all the countries are racking their brains trying to figure out how to resolve this critical situation and keep their ever rising medical costs down.

 

Hello? I am not a politician or law maker, but shut these idiots down and make the gray market illegal. Make it illegal for pharmacists to sell drugs to anyone but their patients and make the penalty swift. Make the very profitable big pharma industry adhere to a strict supply policy and hold them criminally liable if don't. And finally, set a limited fair market markup on these critical life saving drugs.

 

After all, the last time I looked, according to the rules of the Geneva Conventions, the taking of hostages is a forbidden act.

     

This series was one of my first uploads on Flickr. I think about this day a lot because you could say this was the day that i really fell in love with photography. I had always been a painter until then, and my camera was used as memory collector or as an aid to my painting. That day everything changed.

 

It was my first time visiting the Guggenheim and I was very excited. As I was happily walking around taking pictures, one of the security guards who was having a bad day decided to get on my case. He told me I couldn't take pictures and decide to follow me around to make sure I was doing what he said. I was really, really angry as everyone around me was taking photographs. In a trying-to-be-challenging way I decided to shoot at the reflections on the floor, and told him, I am just shooting the floor, you can't do anything about that. I was captivated by this woman in a pink dress and her reflection, but mostly I really wanted to piss off the guard... :P I made it my purpose to follow this girl around all day... I never did see the art work that day. I was hypnotized, captivated by the moment and the images on the camera.Absolutely seduced by what I was seeing and the way the little Sony Powershot was capturing it.

 

I didn't need to paint this, no, this was already finished.Photography all of a sudden had a completely new meaning for me. I stayed all day where the shiny floor was and took a series of pictures that I call "Ghosts in the Guggenheim" and that was the beginning of an ongoing series of ghosts in museums. (needless to say I had to return to the Guggenheim some other time to actually see what was in there, but it has never been as good as that day)

 

To this day, with so much that I have tried to learn and so much that I still need to learn, this is probably one of my top 3 magical photography moments ever and I wanted to share it with you. :) oh, yes! And thanks to that guard ;)

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. --Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.

 

He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

  

He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

 

He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

 

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

 

He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

 

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

 

He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states; for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new appropriations of lands.

 

He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.

 

He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

 

He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

 

He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.

 

He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to civil power.

 

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation:

 

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

 

For protecting them, by mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states:

 

For cutting off our trade with all parts of the world:

 

For imposing taxes on us without our consent:

 

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury:

 

For transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offenses:

 

For abolishing the free system of English laws in a neighboring province, establishing therein an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule in these colonies:

 

For taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments:

 

For suspending our own legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

 

He has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us.

 

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

 

He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilized nation.

 

He has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.

 

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare, is undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

 

In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

 

Nor have we been wanting in attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.

 

We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do. And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

"That’s why it is time to recognize a simpler principle for fair use: work that adds to the value of the original, as opposed to substituting for the original, is fair use. In my view that’s a principle already behind the traditional lines: no one (well, nearly no one) would watch Mel Brook’s Spaceballs as a substitute for Star Wars; a book review is no substitute for reading The Naked and the Dead. They are complements to the original work, not substitutes, and that makes all the difference."

 

Which is all very true and all.

 

As a photographer, producer and publisher of content I probably, pretty much, technically, in a round about way violate copyright every single day.

 

I've got a set of images called Starbucky where I publish images of Starbucks (Starbuck's doesn't allow photographers to shoot in their stores by the way). I've also got a set of images up of paintings (go ahead and click through, I've got a great painting of a naked woman by artist Mel Ramos) -- someday there will be over 20,000 photographs in this set alone. Are some of these paintings over 75 years old and in the public domain? Probably. Are others less than 75 years old and under some kind of obscure, tucked away, undermined secret copyright. Probably.

 

Sometimes the world calls for permission based photography. It's mostly sort of a whim on a case by case basis. Like this woman in New York. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she said yes (just kidding, I didn't really ask her for permission, I ask some people though). Most of the time permission from Coca Cola and Chuck Close and the estate of Andy Warhol and some painter whose image captured your attention a few years ago and whose name you've long since forgotten is unnecessary duplication of effort. Redistribution. Retribution. Reincarnation.

 

I shoot billboards. I shoot the Coca Cola sign. I shoot mannequins and dogs and squirrels and security guards and angels and iPod ads. I shoot architecture and night scenes and rain and silhouettes. I shoot stamps and album covers and neon signs and car shows and Donald Trump with paint splattered all over his face and the Jack Kerouac On the Road scroll (even when I'm not allowed to). I have a set of images up containing photographs of Santa Claus and Jesus Christ. Sets can be powerful, very powerful.

 

Sometimes I'll publish a photograph of a copyrighted painting (like this painting by a cat named Pablo) and somebody else will come along and offer their own interpretation. Thank you the marquise de sade, you're the best -- love your shot of Big Pussy.

 

Sometimes I violate copyright. Sometimes I don't. Sometimes I publish these shots to Flickr and Zooomr and Pownce and my blog -- where I make money selling ads -- and sometimes I don't. There's a photograph on Bloomberg.com this morning of Ben Bernanke. He's rubbing his closed eyes with a look of doom. He could be about to cry. There's a little button next to it that says enlarge/details. Maybe we should blow this image up big and publish it on a billboard on Hollywood Boulevard.

 

As the waves of light find my eye and find my Canon 5D, I snap. Crackle. Pop. Bamm. Bamm again. Bamm a third time.

 

Fair use? Who the hell cares. The images need to be captured. And they need to be presented to the world in new and exciting and fun ways. Certainly a culture that gave us a talking Pontiac Firebird named Kitt could understand that. Whatcha selling this week? Ron Paul?

 

Andy Warhol probably would have thought it was more important to be famous than rich even though he was both. Andy ripped off Campbell's soup -- may he rest in peace. Richard Prince rips off people all the time. God bless the devil that is Richard Prince. Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. Art is more important than commerce. Your camera is your friend, not your enemy. Never apologize for your art. Power to the people. The best photographs in the world have yet to be taken.

This abandoned prison in France named H15 closed at some point in 2010 when another detention centre which was closer to modern american maximum security prisons was built. This old prison which is described as dilapidated before its closure was set for demolition before the site was occupied by travellers who have set up camp in the front car park which includes seemingly permanent structures and portaloos. The prison also apparently had a poor security record and there appears to be links to mistreatment of prisoners of war during the second world war on the site, although I haven’t found any conclusive documentation about this particular rumour.

A composition of two of my actual pictures. I think the name fits very well, as its actually a roe and the surname "Roe" is used in court and elsewhere for unidentified/unspecified people. This is also the case here, as you only see the silhouette of the animal. The subtle blue and yellow/orange colors give the image a quite warm and comforting tone i think. All in all i want to convey a sense of innocence and feeling of security. Hope you like it!

One of the lasts shots that I ever took of The Sea Prince.

 

In 11 years I had never actually trailed this plane before, for some reason! Possibly due to there always been other stuff to shot and the fact that there is an annoying security light that comes on if you get too close around this side. I'm a sucker for a north star trail so it had to be this side!

 

I wasn't sure on the angle at first, I had already had to compromise so much because of the overgrowth and in this case battling the impending daybreak from the right. I only just capped this off in time, I tried one more photo from here in landscape and the day had already broken, not the worst shot ever but still not what I was going for.

 

Looks like I didn't break my streak last time as it still took me ages to decide to upload this photo next. I like this one, it's fitting, the composition, the stars, it's just right for "The Final Shot" A few minutes after this was taken we said our goodbyes and left never to return.

Not the most natural setting perhaps, but I wanted to take a different approach to Mike Doyle's Beautiful Lego 3: Nature. I guess I'll see how that goes. At any rate, this has been a work in progress for several months now with a lot of school-filled gaps in between. Once Mike announced his contest, I knew what I wanted the base to be invaded by. My mind filled with thoughts of Star Trek's Project Genesis with a more militaristic intent. Credit to Jgg321 for inspiring me to put my biology research on Adenosine Triphospate to geeky use. Lastly, I'll point out my attempt at scenic sunset lighting (Assuming the Sun is setting somewhere on right, making you, the viewer, in the North) in case it wasn't glaringly obvious.

 

On a wholly unrelated note, I should probably point out that I turned sixteen last Wednesday. Thanks for stopping by and tolerating my chocolatized ramblings, everyone. :)

This series was one of my first uploads on Flickr. I think about this day a lot because you could say this was the day that i really fell in love with photography. I had always been a painter until then, and my camera was used as memory collector or as an aid to my painting. That day everything changed.

 

It was my first time visiting the Guggenheim and I was very excited. As I was happily walking around taking pictures, one of the security guards who was having a bad day decided to get on my case. He told me I couldn't take pictures and decide to follow me around to make sure I was doing what he said. I was really, really angry as everyone around me was taking photographs. In a trying-to-be-challenging way I decided to shoot at the reflections on the floor, and told him, I am just shooting the floor, you can't do anything about that. I was captivated by this girl in a pink dress and her reflection, but mostly I really wanted to piss off the guard... :P I made it my purpose to follow this girl around all day... I never did see the art work that day. I was hypnotized, captivated by the moment and the images on the camera.Absolutely seduced by what I was seeing and the way the little Sony Powershot was capturing it. I didn't need to paint this, no, this was already finished.Photography all of a sudden had a completely new meaning for me. I stayed all day where the shiny floor was and took a series of pictures that I call "Ghosts in the Guggenheim" and that was the beginning of an ongoing series of ghosts in museums. (needless to say I had to return to the Guggenheim some other time to actually see what was in there, but it has never been as good as that day)

 

To this day, with so much that I have tried to learn and so much that I still need to learn, this is probably one of my top 3 magical photography moments ever and I wanted to share it with you. :)

IR Photography

 

Armed with a Flickr ID, I packed my tripod, IR filter and camera. I went to a private and exclusive club nearby. I brought my Flickr ID just in case Im accosted by security guards. Well what do you know? Since I had my Flickr ID hanging in my neck, I appeared to be on official photography mission. Two guards passed by and even greeted me good morning.:))

After a long hiatus from posting photos from my Southeast Asia journey, I am finally going to finish that up starting with my visit to the amazing temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

 

I was in Cambodia in the month of May, which happens to be the hottest part of the year. It was hot, brutally hot. The weather was terrible and the light was flat. With no decent clouds in the sky, I did not come away with many great photos. I spent six days at Angkor Wat (really just five as one day was spent in my hotel bed recovering from a minor case of the flu) and the light at sunrise everyday was flat and at sunset it would be overcast and rain like crazy.

 

Do not let the blue skies fool you, this was one of the few days there was decent weather. This was taken early mid-morning in the warm, soft light before the scorching sun would play its part of wrecking havoc.

 

Built around 1190 AD by King Jayavarman VII, Bayon is a Buddhist temple, but it incorporates elements of Hindu cosmology. Located north of the more famous Angkor Wat, Bayon is known for its huge, smiling stone faces and everywhere I went I felt like I was being watched, much like being at a U.S. airport with the Transportation Security Administration looking on.

My 3rd view of this place ... this time with my Wide Angle lens ...

Where am I stood is the furthest back you can get (at that level in any case).

 

I think some people would tell me I should take my tripod too ... I get funny looks for the security guards every time I go there, wondering what on earth I'm taking (well the last time, they were convinced it was them ;-) ... and someone else will tell me I should get a D90 ....

 

This was taken a few days after the snow fell in Paris. It was freezing and I didn't stay for too long ...

A CH-53E seconds from touchdown at Kiwanis Park in Yuma, Arizona during a humanitarian assistance exercise as part of Weapons and Tactics Instructor course 1-19. Just as they would in real-world humanitarian operations, the -53s brought in a medical team, a security team, and pallets of (simulated in this case) food and other relief supplies.

Such is the case of hunting the milky way in Singapore that I shoot star trails for security in case I get back and realize I can't make a good image with the milky way.

 

Here's a 119 image stack of the stars from last night! What a pity I could not access further into the location. Would make for some great light painting opportunities as the entire block is in darkness.

After my first two rather abstract shots from the trip to the Colorado Plateau, I felt it was appropriate to present something instantly recognisable. This is wide panoramic view over the famous Horseshoe Bend near Page, Arizona. Although being a over-visited place by tourists and photographers (with the inherent limitation for creating unique photographs), it's kind of awe-inspiring when you're looking down the bend for the first time. The majesty and scale of the place are unparalleled in the Colorado Plateau.

 

But ... there is a but ... this composition was one of the most painful ones I ever took. I suffer from a fear of heights, that is on a medium level I guess. I quickly feel incomfortable when at large steps down where there is now secure element like a window, a fence or whatsoever. The one thing I can't really stand is wind at those spots. This makes me feel even more shaky, like I'm loosing the control of the situation every second. Even watching people standing on the edge makes me shiver. So ... on the edge of Horseshoe Bend you look down several hundred feet with no security whatsoever, and there was a strong wind this evening. With the help of my wife I scouted a spot where I could set up the tripod near the drop-off, crawled on hand and feet to the edge, set everything up (including my new Panosaurus head) and backed of two feet. When the light show started, my wife clicked the shutter and made the show, with me laying on the rock and holding the tripod. We were lucky to have some clouds at the horizon and it took almost 30 minutes till we were done with it. What a relief to step back from the edge and walk uphill to the parking lot ...

 

But then again, the experience was worth it. The shots turned out quite nicely and by combining five portrait shots with three exposures respectively I was able to retain details in both sky and canyon.

EDIT: I reworked this whole panorama from scratch, because I felt there was some potential in projection and color processing. This re-up is the version I now regard as final, I hope this will be the case in some days and weeks too ;)

Meet Marcos, the soft-spoken alcoholic apple picker who rambles harder than anyone you know. We met him on night two, at the Chihuahua yard throat, where a few hours later, we all missed the train together. On night three, he was nowhere to be found, and determined not to miss the train again, we boarded the train 3 hours prior to departure when they doubled back past the yard throat. At 11:55 security guards got on our car and asked for a hurried 50 peso bribe, "for cokes", because the train was supposed to leave at midnight. The train pulled at 12 on the dot, and not 10 seconds later we see a bucket fly into our gondola, and guess who's climbing the ladder asking for help getting his stuff in before it picked up speed? MARCOS! He rolled with us for days, and even ended up riding BACK where we'd just came from, all on accounts of there being no apples to pick and nothing better to do. We originally figured the guards told him some gringos were in such-and-such gondola, but he told us that wasn't the case... he just walked the line, found a nice gon, and tossed the bucket in and climbed on, right as the train was pulling. Train was pretty long that night, with tons of gons, so that was a rad start to our first train ride in Mexico.

The DZ Bank building on Pariser Platz, designed by the American architect Frank Gehry, is one of Berlin's most spectacular new office buildings.

This being, first and foremost, a bank, the facade - a cascading mixture of sand-coloured stone and swooning glass, graced by massive chrome and glass doors - subtly disguises what lies beyond. The interior courtyard of the building shows Gehry's trademark: a massive, titanium, morphing form. In this case a towering, curvaceous fish that houses a central conference space captures motion and movement in the building.

 

As the building is owned by the DZ Bank, visitors aren't allowed in - you'll have to restrict your enthusiasm and stick to the outside !

I was lucky, the lady security guard allowed me in the front door, and walk up to the security gates so that I could at least take a few photos.
