From a series of long exposure photos which illustrate a period of 'reflection' during a visit to Cornwall last autumn. My intention was to produce a selection of 'dreamy' images and for the viewer to look out beyond the shoreline to an imagined destination.

I first saw this amazing scenery in a photo by the very talented Iñaki, and when I realised it was close enough to where we were staying to be able to visit for an evening I knew I had to go. Aside from this incredible rock formation ("The Cathedral"), the place, which sits between the fishing town of Bermeo and the smaller village, Bakio, is also home to the historic chapel of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe - a small hermitage which sits alone atop a small rocky island connected to the mainland by a narrow stone footbridge. The chapel itself is nearly one thousand years old and has featured in a number of historic events throughout its life. There is also a second island close by, called Aketx/Aketze, which also makes a good photographic subject. I had a great time shooting around the whole area until darkness and an oncoming storm forced us to leave...

The shot:

- Canon EOS 5D Mark II

- Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM @ 28mm

- 3 bracketed exposures of 8, 15 and 30 seconds @ f/10, ISO200, Manual mode

- B+W Circular Polariser (no grads as I'd broken the one I'd have used, and no ND filters as I'd lost my cable release so couldn't do bulb exposures)

- Manfrotto 190XB tripod with 322RC2 joystick grip ball head

Processing:

- WB and tonal adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw

- Three exposures hand-blended using luminosity masks

- Selective Curves to darken the foreground (I wanted the long exposure for the smooth water but this left the foreground unnaturally bright)

- 50% grey layer for dodging and burning through luminosity selections

- Contrast boost with a Gradient Map layer in Luminosity mode

- Colour adjustment with Selective Color

- Colour boost with a Hue/Saturation layer through a saturation mask

- Global Curves layer for a bit of "pop"

- Resized and sharpened with Smart Sharpen
