Santorini se compone de un grupo de islas de origen volcánico y su nombre se refiere a Santa Irene. Llamado también Strongili y Calista, la isla fue el lugar donde tuvo lugar una de las mayores erupciones volcánicas en el mundo. Hoy en día es un volcán con su caldera sumergida. La palabra “Caldera” proviene del español, es una de las configuraciones geológicas más importantes en el planeta tierra y ha sido objeto de investigación en el campo de la geología y la arqueología.
Después de una terrible erupción, el centro de la isla se hundió en el mar, dejando sólo el cráter y los imponentes acantilados de 150 a 300 m. de altura, donde se pueden admirar los pequeños pueblos que parecen suspendidos en el cielo. Estos pueblos son típicos cicládicos, de casas blancas con ventanas azules contrastando con la roca negra volcánica de la Caldera. El nombre "Santorini" viene de "Santa Irini", a pesar de que oficialmente se llama Thira. Está situada en el sur de las Islas Cycladas, entre Ios y Anafi.
La isla de Santorini está relacionada con el mito de la Atlántida. La primera erupción del volcán se estima ocurrió alrededor de 1500 aC. Muchos especialistas creen que esta erupción fue responsable de las enormes olas del tsunami que azotó las costas del norte de Creta y destruyó la civilización minoica que florecía en ese momento.
La última erupción data de 1956 y el volcán está vivo hoy en día. Nos contaron en nuestra visita a la isla, que se teme que algún día entre en erupción y creen que no tardando mucho, por lo que la isla es posible que desaparezca. Si esto es cierto, sería una lastima que esto llegara a ocurrir ya que es una isla con un encanto especial.
Santorin, en grec Σαντορίνη / Santoríni, aussi appelée Théra ou Thíra, Θήρα / Thíra, est une île de Grèce située en mer Égée. Elle est l'île la plus grande et la plus peuplée d'un petit archipel volcanique comprenant quatre autres îles, auquel on donne parfois son nom (voir archipel de Santorin).
L'île, ainsi que celles de Thirassía et Aspronissi, est un vestige d'une ancienne île partiellement détruite vers 1600 av. J.-C. au cours de l'éruption minoenne2.
Santorin constitue l'un des principaux lieux touristiques de la Grèce, avec ses villages blancs à coupoles bleues perchés au sommet des falaises, ses panoramas sur les autres îles et la caldeira et ses sites archéologiques, notamment ceux de la ville antique de Théra et d'Akrotiri où furent retrouvées des ruines minoennes.
Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη, pronounced [sandoˈrini]), classically Thera (English pronunciation /ˈθɪrə/), and officially Thira (Greek: Θήρα [ˈθira]); is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2011 census population of 15,550. The municipality of Santorini comprises the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia and the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana. The total land area is 90.623 km2 (34.990 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit.
Η Σαντορίνη, Θήρα ή Στρογγύλη (παλαιότερη ονομασία) είναι νησί που βρίσκεται στο νότιο Αιγαίο πέλαγος, στο νησιωτικό σύμπλεγμα των Κυκλάδων, νότια της Ίου και δυτικά από την Ανάφη. Απέχει από τον Πειραιά 128 ναυτικά μίλια και 63 ναυτικά μίλια από τη Κρήτη. Ο Αθηνιός, το μεγαλύτερο λιμάνι του νησιού, έχει δημιουργηθεί στον ομώνυμο όρμο. Η έκταση της είναι 76,19 τετραγωνικά χιλιόμετρα. Σήμερα η Σαντορίνη είναι ένα από τα διασημότερα τουριστικά κέντρα του κόσμου.
Santorini Greece, certainly one of the most beautiful places on Earth, at least I think so.
