If there's one time of day I love on the beach, it's when the tide is ebbing leaving a glassy, mirrored surface on the sand, bringing up all the glorious shapes and textures left by the retreating sea.
I got a sand art frame for Christmas. When you turn it over, it forms a new scene and they fascinate me. Here is today's self creation.
In every outthrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth
This was taken 10 years ago at the New York international auto show, we used to go often with my son,
the last couple we did not go.
The artistic work that goes in sand art is amazing!
My son took this photo.
This is Santa Cruz artist Jim Denevan at work, as shot from the cliffs at the Sutro mansion ruins overlooking Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Check out Jim's work at wwwjimdenevan.com. It was simply a lucky shot for me, right place, right time, right lighting!
This shot is my first Explore pick, and in 2 days has become my most favorited image. Thanks to all, the response has been overwhelming.
.... like seeing sand sculptures where there is no beach.
Sand sculptures are something you expect to see at the seaside and not in a town in southern Germany, quite far away from any beach, but Ludwigsburg has a sand scupture exhibition which started on Saturday. It takes place in the gardens of the palace of Ludwigsburg, a beautiful location for all kinds of events. I have looked forward to this exhibition for weeks and went there this morning.
The sculpture in this photo is called "Lady in baroque dress". It took 6 days and 30 tons of sand to create it. Of course they don't use normal sand. It's a compact heavy sand which is also used on building sites. The grains of this sand are square which means that they stick together better. In the comments is a close-up of the above sculpture which shows how beautiful and perfect her face is.
A few more photos of sand sculptures will follow.
Mother Nature playing around again, creating beauty out of nothin' but sand and a few minerals.
This, I believe, was right at the intersection of the Prospect Trail and whatever route we took. Unless that intersection was somewhere else, there was an intersection here. Didn't matter what trail we were on, it was all good.

Notre planète est une magnifique artiste. Elle utilise sa propre substance matérielle pour créer de véritables oeuvres d’art abstrait. D’où, cette collection d’images consacrées à ses travaux que j’ai appelé Earth Works.....

Our planet is, to me, a wonderful artist. She uses her own material substance to create true works of abstract art. Hence, this collection of images devoted to its artworks that I called Earth Works...

Happy weekend everybody.
Due to the extraordinary summer with lots of sunshine and no rain the water level of the river The Thames was low. So people enjoyed a sun bath sitting on the bank and at some places sand-artists were showing their art. I liked this couch, very inviting after a long walk, but I'm not sure if it would sit comfortable....
You may have seen the show the Sand Masters on TV and two of the artists were in New Brighton for the annual sandcastle competition. I believe this sculpture was created by Sue McGrew
My friend makes a heart above her head. Me, at the left, took the picture.
It looks like I made a heart also but it isn't.
View this sand "art" LARGE on black please
The grey marks in the image are footsteps...
What amazing skills these guys have to produce such fantastic works of art out of sand. (I only got as far as bucket and spade sand castles)
I am always fascinated when nature creates art. This was captured while walking around Skarðsvik beach.
I think this is the most moving piece of sand art I have ever seen and it was on my local beach. This sand sculpture left most spectators speechless.
This sculpture came second overall and was made by Carol Stevens and Andrew Lyons

A pretty golden sunrise reflects its metallic colors onto the water and sand at the seashore. Captured at Bronte Beach in Sydney.
An artist created this intricate mandala in the sand during low tide. Beyond the symmetric design are a number of more free-form shapes, but clearly this circular feature was meant to be the centerpiece. By the time we left for the day, the tide had obliterated much of the artist's work, so I'm glad I was able to record it here.
