Colonia del Sacramento, conocida en el medio local como Colonia, es la capital del departamento de Colonia, en el suroeste de Uruguay. Está ubicada en la ribera norte —izquierda— del Río de la Plata, y a 177 kilómetros de Montevideo. Se encuentra emplazada sobre el cabo que forman las puntas de San Pedro y Santa Rita.

Su barrio histórico fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1995 al ilustrar la fusión exitosa de los estilos portugués, español y post-colonial. Este casco antiguo comprende 12 hectáreas del extremo occidental de la ciudad. El plano es de origen portugués y contrasta con el estándar que prescribía la ley española sobre las Indias Occidentales. Se caracteriza por sus calles angostas de piedra, que resaltan su tradición militar.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints announced on April 21, 2001 that a temple would be built in the Sacramento area. This temple is the seventh built by the Church in California, more than any state except Utah. The Sacramento California Temple serves a growing membership which totals approximately 80,000 in the area and is the 123rd operating temple of the Church.

Sacramento has a wonderful Cathedral only a few blocks from the state Capitol, A quiet cool place to meditate especially on those 100 degree plus days in the summer. Free to enter and nearby you can enjoy cafes and shade trees or a weekly farmers market too. It may not rival the great churches of Europe but its a place of soul and spirit to bring harmony and thoughtful prayer.

Northern California Fires

One of the newest LDS temples is in Sacramento, California. Just barely 2 years old, the grounds offer shelter to wild turkeys, deer, and on the day we visited, seven eagles circled the spire.

Late afternoon at Sacramento, California, the Tower bridge at right, this was one of the scariest photos I've taken lately, it was Thanksgiving holiday evening, the entire riverfront was deserted except for a few vagrants, and there I was carrying newly acquired $3000 worth of camera and lenses. I trudged down to the river for a few quick photos but I didn't want to linger long, it was a perfect opportunity for a robbery.
