This little cutie visited my backyard everyday back in January. Hoping to see him again next Winter.

This is the name of a variety of red cactus which are very popular.

Male - At Potengi - Ceará - The Ruby-topaz Hummingbird is a much coveted gem of circum-Amazonian savanna habitats from Colombia east through Venezuela, the Guianas, south through Brazil and west to eastern Bolivia. It is a very small hummingbird, but with a brilliant ruby crown and nape, iridescent gold throat and breast and bright orange tail and is luckily, quite common throughout its range. It forages for the nectar of flowering shrubs from the understory to tree tops in open country but also in cultivated areas and gardens. birdsoftheworld.org

Only see these between Jan-March. This one still visited the feeder in April, but it's the last photo this year.

Capturing sharp images of hummingbirds in flight is very difficult and requires a lot of patience, preplanning and luck. I was lucky to capture this small female Ruby Throated Hummingbird in flight near a bird feeder at a cottage outside of Ottawa, Ontario. As you can appreciate, my ratio of keepers to rejects was very low.

This ruby crowned kinglet adds a splash of color to the dreary grey day. At Commonwealth Lake.

Tilden Botanic Garden, Berkeley, CA

I was at the Botanic Garden with my wife, who was doing an extended bird survey of the Garden with three of her fellow docents. It was a pleasant spring morning weather. This handsome male was preening himself extensively on a branch by the pond, displaying the largest ruby crown that any of us had ever seen (not quite captured in this picture). He was also vocalizing and calling actively now and then.

I love these little sweeties with their lovely delicate singing. Never remaining still definitely makes them not easy to photograph.

I am finally posting a hummingbird photo from my garden. Having software issues with my new computer, so hopefully this turns out as I have never used it before.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are eastern North America’s only breeding hummingbird. But in terms of area, this species occupies the largest breeding range of any North American hummingbird.

The oldest known hummingbird was a female broad-tailed hummingbird that scientists banded in 1976 in Colorado. She was recaptured in the same place in 1987 at the age of 12 years and 2 months.

Very dark and foggy day yesterday, Had to use setting I normally wouldn't go to

Regulus calendula

New Britain, PA

This ruby crowned kinglet was flitting through a bush nearby. Mostly, it faced away from me, but occasionally faced me directly, still not revealing that crown. Finally, it shifted to this position, allowing viewing of a bit of the red.

Dappled light on a landscape, or chiaroscuro to the early artists, catches the eye and adds complexity to a landscape.

It had rained much of the previous night, and the clouds were lifting, allowing sunshine to light the various colors of aspen foliage. Dappled light on a patchwork of colors.

Ruby Mountains, Colorado

For this shot, I tried a different lighting technique. I had a triangle set up. The flash was off the camera and about 15 feet away to my left. I was about 15 feet away from where I wanted the bird. Sun was to my right. Just had to wait for the hummer to get to the right spot.

Most birds are creatures of habit. If you watch them long enough, you can kinda predict their next move. The Hummer didn't let me down.

Ruby is an adult orangutan at the Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque, NM, USA. Ruby is the most curious of the group that lives there when it comes to humans. She will often sit and watch the zoo visitors go by for long periods of time without getting annoyed in the least, even when some adult shouts to their child, "Hey, look at the monkeys!' She is truly a great, great ape'. Texture in BG replaced the bland original. Thanks for looking.

Spent a fun day at Bill's Backyard Bird Blind sitting in a comfy chair, 15 feet from a flower bed yesterday. Saw three of these little guys. This one looks like a juvenile male. A fill flash was used.

The spiderweb used by hummingbirds is sticky, of course, so the lichens stick to the web and are also caught beneath overlapping strands of silk. The female collects the silk strands of spiderweb and winds them around plant parts and lichens and then fills the cup with plant down. In spring, female hummingbirds are often seen hovering in the eaves and roof overhangs of houses, where they are probably collecting spiderwebs and, perhaps, also dining on small spiders.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet at Kathryn Albertson Park, Boise, Idaho

Chrysolampis mosquitus - Male - Small hummingbird with a rather large range across northeastern South America and eastern Panama. Male is unmistakable with a golden throat, a ruby-red crown, and an orange tail with dark tips. Female is trickier to identify, but note the pale gray underparts, white-tipped tail feathers, and dull grayish green upperpars. The short and slightly decurved bill should also help identify the female. Fairly common in open habitats, including savannah, forest edge, and gardens. ebird.org/species/ruthum1

I don't know if this happens to anyone else....but sometimes when I finally see a bird I have been unsuccessfully looking for....all of a sudden I see them everywhere! I think in my case looking at images just doesn't make a bird easier to find....but once I finally see one and get to photograph it, it somehow sticks in my brain. These little guys are a lot more common than I imagined! And at last one gave me a little view of how they get their name!

The Ruby Crowned Kinglet, commonly seen without the reddish head stripe, is found along brushy areas near water and feeding in the undergrowth.
