Original posting for what became the meme "I Hate Sandcastles", and then later, the meme known as "Success Kid". (knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-hate-sandcastles-success-kid)

thanks for all the love :)

Made by me for the d6 party in boston in april out of an old prom dress

The saturday of the party was a very, very eventful day. I'd barely slept in 4 days because I'd been working on others costumes. I ended up at roflcon, miraculously and accidently and become friends with a man in a giant owl (true story, I'll tell it some day), got word that momo was stolen, cried for hours while finishing sewing...I finally wrapped up working at about midnight. Went downstairs to the party, made myself a drink of watermelon vodka+tang+a handful of limes. Seriously. A handful of limes. Don't ask me why. I didn't drink it, just poured it all over my dress while swinging on the ceiling swing for several hours.

Both me and my dress came home a crumbled mess. I did manage to bang out a grant proposal that got accepted (after they had me clarify a few things. . .), but otherwise I was a disaster! John decided to help and washed this dress, which is dry clean only....so now it's a bit crumbled on the skirt area, and the silver is wearing off on the bodice. No matter, it's still fun.

This dress embodies a few of my design beliefs. Reuse old things, make them fabulous and new! Whenever possible, either build it around a bathing suit or put in a pair of underpants. Make the costume 1 piece. The last two are because I love to dance and I'm clumsy, and I have a tendency to shed extra pieces if I'm dancing (earrings, necklaces, jackets etc) so if it's in one piece then it's much harder to lose.

Last year at burning man I wore the same retro bathing suit most of the time, I could cycle, climb things, cartwheel and dance with out showing off things that I didn't want to. After that, I thought "I will always wear a bathing suit to a party". This dress is more or less a fancy bathing suit :)

So that is the tale of my ballerina dress.
