1950's Hudson Hornet and the Spud Boy Diner. The car and the diner both belong to Gordon and Val. I stopped in for breakfast and although I'm a total stranger to them, I felt like I was with old friends.

Originally built in 1946, along with the Pink Motel next door, Cadillac Jack's (originally the Pink Cafe) closed its doors in 1989, and has since been solely utilized as a location for film and TV shoots.

Deserted roadside diner in the middle of nowhere (you know, the ones made from melons :)). I purposely omitted human characters to help create the story. I actually felt quite down while I was creating all the elements of this image. I imagined how sad some peoples lives are when they spend them running a small business that only allows them to scrape through in life. I was also intrigued at how apocalyptic the final image has become.

The Midway Restaurant in Random Lake, WI.

The Roadside Diner, Wall, New Jersey. I found it closed for Christmas.

Val and Gordon own and operate the Spud Boy Diner in Lanesboro, Minnesota. Breakfast only, in a restored 1926 Goodell manufactured diner. It's the third that Gordie has restored. Stop in sometime and he'll tell you the story. The story and the breakfast are worth the drive.

I'm sure this long abandoned truck stop is haunted.

Another great photo for the historical files. I'm not sure of the exact location but I figure around 1960 with the Corvair wagon in the background. Beautiful and rare 1958 Ford Country Squire brightens up the sun drenched parking lot.

The Roadside Diner in Wall has been an area institution since the 1940s, at the intersection of Routes 33 & 34 on the Collingwood Circle, and was used as a location for the cover of the Bon Jovi album "Crossroad." It’s also the location for the video to Bruce Springsteen’s song, "Girls In Their Summer Clothes." Can't get more Jersey than that.

Silk City Diners, (Paterson Vehicle Company), Paterson, NJ, 1927 – 1964 The Paterson Vehicle Company was run by the Cooper family since 1886, began as wagon builders. They eventually made automobile, bus and truck bodies before starting to make “Silk City Diners” in 1927. Built as standard production units, six or eight at a time, in different color schemes, they were the lowest priced diner you could buy.

Anthony Ewing of EthnicNJ.com said, "When I launched a website to help people find New Jersey's best ethnic food, I knew Jersey food would be it's own category. And how can you talk about quintessential New Jersey food without featuring the Jersey diner? New Jersey is blessed with a rich history of diners and diner culture. Our diners are old, like the Summit Diner [1939]; classic and chrome-plated, like the Tick Tock; huge and theme park-esque, like Mastori's; and even foodie in a diner setting, like Edison's Skylark. What all the best Jersey diners have in common is quality food at reasonable prices, and a real sense of place. Each is unique. The best ones are open 24-hours, serve breakfast all day, and have coffee on the table before you sit down. Like New Jersey itself, you'll find all kinds of people at a diner—blue-collar and white collar, old and young—and all kinds of food on the menu, from Greek to Mexican, Lobster to Disco Fries. Diner culture is Jersey culture."

Despite appearances, Saint Paul, Minnesota's, famed Mickey's Dining Car was never actually a railroad car. Rather, this classic diner, in continuous operation at the same location since 1939; was to resemble a railroad dining car. The prefabricated building was constructed in 1937 by the Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company of Elizabeth, New Jersey, then shipped to Saint Paul by rail. You may have seen this diner in films such as "The Mighty Ducks," "Jingle All the Way" and "A Prairie Home Companion."

until the summer of 2010, this intersection was a heavily traveled stop on CA-70 between sacramento and marysville. now bypassed by a new four-lane freeway, not a single car travelled thru during my 20 minute visit.

... or NOT!

This youngster decided to make possum road kill his meal ... in the middle of two lanes on a four lane highway! It could have easily been his LAST meal. Thankfully a motorist stopped and blocked the lane. Bob was just coming home and yelled for me to "GRAB YOUR CAMERA". The guy took a 5 foot branch from the shoulder and casually walked toward the RTH. He moved up onto the power lines The man picked up the possum and walked it over to the grassy field. The RTH then settled in for dinner in a much safer place.

He allowed me some more shots. I took advantage of the opportunity and then left him alone to enjoy dinner. Later, when I went out, he was up on the pole of the power line looking happy and full. A half hour after that he was gone :)

I cropped the top photo so all the blood and guts weren't showing. And all can be viewed individually.

Just a little diner found around one of the small towns in central Texas.

Dick's Cafe on S. Valley Drive in Las Cruces (August 2008).

Dick's Cafe (dubbed 'Cholesterol Gulch' by one of my dad's friends) was one of the few remaining roadside drive-in diners in Las Cruces from the city's mid-20th century heydey.

Unfortunately, someone must have asked for a burger to be extra well-done and a fire broke out.

The owners had to relocate to a new location in the old Monte Vista Center on Main St., but I understand that this site is now fixed up and back-in-business (see my image of the rebuilt Dick's Cafe ).
