OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A 24 shot 3 row panorama of the Red Rock Canyon during sunset. While experimenting with various techniques of panorama, I started breaking the rules by using Aperture priority and Auto Focus. This allows me to shoot multi row images at f/5.6 and keep the foreground to background in focus. Also, it allows me to shoot an even exposure across wide area during sunset where the scene is very high contrast between sky and foreground. This is especially helpful when shooting very wide shots where the exposure is often 2+ stops different from the North and South to where the sunsets in the West.

In the past, I would lose photos to poor exposure in manual mode, where the sunset area was alright, but the North and South were very under exposed due to the huge light difference during sunset. Add in the contrast from the sky to foreground, and there's no possible way to get a good image with extreme exposure adjustments. Therefor the other option was HDR. But that took too long shooting across multi rows, and by the time I reset to take the second row, the exposure had dropped off significantly where I would need to use grad filters in Lightroom to compensate for the huge difference.

After some experimentation with the Auto Stitch software Microsoft ICE, I found it would not only focus stack, but blend or balance out some of the exposure up to a point. Thus, I started using the Aperture priority, and making exposure compensations while shooting across multi rows. And the faster aperture allowed for faster shooting times. This was a breakthrough for me and my panorama shooting.

With this technique, post processing is necessary. Exposure adjustments need to be made, and grad filters are often used. But not to the extreme of shooting in manual mode. Thus, more color and detail is retained, and these super high resolution images come out well, vs the ones shot in manual mode.
