Every three years since 1997, for instance, the World Water Council has drawn thousands to participate in its World Water Forum during the week of World Day for Water. Participating agencies and NGOs have highlighted issues such as a billion people being without access to safe water for drinking and the role of gender in family access to safe water. In 2003, 2006 and 2009, the UN World Water Development Report was launched on the occasion of the World Water Day. The fourth Report is expected to be released around March 22, 2012.

Correfoc Palma 2015

Saint Anthony Abbot and the demons in Mallorca

The festival of Sant Antoni Abad (Saint Anthony Abbot), which falls on 17 December and which marks the start of the winter solstice, is a major event in most rural villages in Mallorca. The festival starts on 16 December at dusk, when the street bonfires are lit. It´s the Sant Antoni´s Eve,the Patron Saint of domestic animals, and one of the most magical nights in Mallorca when former fertility rituals were held. The ritual remembers all temptations this saint had to overcome in the desert. On this night locals eat sobrassada (Mallorcan sausage meat) cooked on embers in the street, as well as other types of sausage meats and traditional local foods; there is also plenty of wine. The demons wander from bonfire to bonfire, performing their special dance. The festival gets under way with traditional folk songs, which are sung with a special air of Sant Antoni and which remind locals of the saint´s heroic deeds; however, there are also some saucier songs, and it these which are really popular. On 17 December there are processions with floats which represent traditional scenes from Mallorcan rural life; in addition to this, pets are blessed and the demons chase the figure of Sant Antoni, with children playing an essential part in the festival.

The "correfoc" (Fire run) or Devils dance is one of the most deeply rooted traditions initially in Catalonia, Valencian Community and and the Balearic Islands. Nowadays, its participation in the form of passacaglia, procession and correfocs became an essential part of the main celebrations of many towns and cities.

The origin is uncertain, but it seems that it comes from the medieval street theatre.

The synthesis of the Ball de diables is a theatrical representation of the struggle between the good and the evil.

I was walking south along the bridle path that circumnavigates the reservoir in Central Park; and the view here is basically south, with the CitiCorp building and various other New York City skyscrapers in the background. The reservoir is enclosed by a fence (presumably to keep people from falling in, or jumping in to swim, or perhaps even attempting to fish), and there's a jogging trail that runs along the fence; so scenes like this are pretty common.

I hadn't taken the sun into account when I took this picture; during this season, it's pretty far south, and for whatever reason, it left the runner in pretty dark shadow. I tweaked it a bit, and hopefully didn't distort the background too badly. I also replaced the grayish-white hazy sky with a bluish gradient fill, using Adobe Photoshop Elements ...

Having seen this Photoshopped color version of this photograph, my instructor in a March 2009 street photography class suggested that I convert it to black-and-white to accentuate the vertical shapes of the fence behind the runner. I did so here on Flickr, using Apple's Aperture program, and with a yellow filter applied to the initial image.

I think the result is interesting, and I'll try to keep an open mind for a while before deciding whether I like it better than the color version. However, if you have strong opinions one way or the other, I'd enjoy hearing it; leave me Flickr-mail or email me at ed at yourdon dot com

World Water Day has been observed on 22 March since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared 22 March as "World Day for Water".

This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Observance began in 1993 and has grown significantly ever since; for the general public to show support, it is encouraged for the public to not use their taps throughout the whole day. The day has also become a popular Facebook and Twitter trend.

The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries regarding the world's water resources. Each year, one of various UN agencies involved in water issues takes the lead in promoting and coordinating international activities for World Water Day. Since its inception in 2003, UN-Water has been responsible for selecting the theme, messages and lead UN agency for the World Day for Water.

In addition to the UN member states, a number of NGOs promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats have used World Day for Water as a time to focus public attention on the critical water issues of our era. Every three years since 1997, for instance, the World Water Council has drawn thousands to participate in its World Water Forum during the week of World Day for Water. Participating agencies and NGOs have highlighted issues such as a billion people being without access to safe water for drinking and the role of gender in family access to safe water. In 2003, 2006, 2009, and 2012 the UN World Water Development Report was launched on the occasion of the World Water Day.

Tocar assuntos relacionados a problemas de abastecimento de água potável;

Aumentar a consciência pública sobre a importância de conservação, preservação e proteção da água, fontes e suprimentos de água potável;

Recently I discovered a world of beauty and imagination through of one of the recommendations of Flickr, the world of beauty and femininity of Pullips!

For me it was a great discovery because I consider it a parallel world to crossdress, my particular (and may not shared with anyone) concept of the crossdress. The physical base on which it is sustained do not care, I do not like dolls (and men dressed as women not what most enthusiasm me, precisely). But for me the world of Pullips is not about customizable dolls (or the crossdress isn´t about men dressed as women), is about the quest for beauty, the exaltation of femininity, about imagination ... to get the best of ourselves and make the world more beautiful. And especially to overcome the assigned role, leaving the road along which are supposed you must going and begin to make path when walking. Girls play with dolls, the women, at the most, exhibit them as adornments in the house ... sure?

Well done for people who do not cease to be how they really are and live their life! ^_^

www.flickr.com/photos/47932076@N05/favorites/

As regards the world of Pullips (and other dolls) in itself, a image is better than thousand words so I refer you to my favorite photos from other Flickr members:

www.flickr.com/photos/47932076@N05/favorites/

Here you can find some examples and you will may to investigate for yourselves.

More easy, I will post some examples of my favorites in the first comments on this photo.

I was happy to find this world!

PS. ¿Pullips? Los pendientes-plumas celestes son impagables ^_^

Today I doing, again, a caption of the little ones (how easy it being to write only two phrases ...), but despite of that, I have not commented the photo (was for that for which the captions served?), just say that I see this look very "magical", very ... Pullips? The blue plumes-earrings are priceless ^_^

PPS. Si quieres ver videos con este look (If you want see a videos with this look) :

EL hombre que plantaba árboles

Homenaje a Frédéric Back

Hommage à Frédéric Back

The man who planted trees

In honour of Frédéric Back

A work created by Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal

When I consider that a single man, relying only on his own simple physical and moral resources, was able to transform a desert into this land of Canaan, I am convinced that despite everything, the human condition is truly admirable. - Jean Giono, The Man Who Planted Trees

The mosaiculture piece The Man Who Planted Trees pays tribute to Frédéric Back, who crafted a superb animated film version of Jean Giono’s fable of the same title.

The exhibition’s first masterpiece, it conveys the positive impact man can have on his environment, which is one of the competition’s five subthemes.

The Man Who Planted Trees was conceived as a bona fide mosaiculture garden stemming from the efforts of a single man, the shepherd Elzéard Bouffier. Through his ceaseless and patient toil, he was able to transform a desolate, arid expanse of land into a fertile territory verdant with field and forest.

Elzéard Bouffier is depicted here planting a young oak, in a desert—evoked by the bed of stones—where his flock are grazing. Elzéard’s dog is intrigued by the visitors walking past.

The horses galloping in the prairie and the goat drinking from the well embody the return of life made possible by the action of this sole individual, said action represented here by his cape spread out across the entire site.

Did you know?

•The Man Who Planted Trees is a film with an ecological and philosophical message. It has garnered some 40 awards since its release in 1987, most notably the Oscar for the best animated film at the 60th annual awards ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on April 11, 1988, in Hollywood. Christopher Plummer narrated the English version, and Philippe Noiret the French version.

•The topiary The Man Who Planted Trees received the Grand Honorary Award from the international jury as well as the People’s Choice Award at Mosaïcultures Internationales Hamamatsu in 2009, held under the aegis of Japan’s Imperial Family.

•Frédéric Back helped design the work presented in Hamamatsu.

•The Man Who Planted Trees was subsequently presented at the Shanghai World Fair in 2010.

•It is currently on display at the 9th International Garden Expo in Beijing, concurrently with its appearance in Montréal.

•Frédéric Back contributed many suggestions for the overall improvement of the works on display at MIM2013 and created by Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal. A number of innovations are attributable to his recommendations. His buzzwords are life and motion!

Meanwhile, we continue confined at home, respecting the Sanitary Authorities recommendations, missing very much those days when we did not know anything about the Covid-19, we enjoyed the open air, the long walks under the sun, under the rain, breathing a healthy and happy atmosphere. We hope to recover those days soon, with the main desire that all the infected improve and the mortal victims cease.

Take care of your health and yours, it is the most important thing in life!

In the port of Naples there are several places to visit on a day trip. All of them are really beautiful and interesting. Such as, the island of Capri (destination of the international jet -set in the 50s ), Pompeii ruins after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AC The city of Naples with its own personality and monumental jewels and Amalfi shore “Costa Amalfitana”. It is a hard choice.

Finally, I decided to visit the Amalfi shore because I had seen a travelogue about This region of Italy. The landscapes, the villages and the cliffs were breathtaking. The tour did not disappoint, it was unforgettable. The tour guide kept our attention telling us interesting characteristics and singularities of localities where we spent enjoyable hours The suggestions of what we could make and visit were absolutely fantastic. In the end, he received a deserved applause.

This coast has impressive cliffs and a protected environment with few small villages hanging over the sea. A narrow and winding road (not suitable for those who suffer dizziness) takes us through spectacular viewpoints. We made a brief stop in Sorrento and took a walk in its streets full of history. We could taste some "Limocellos", a very typical liquor in Sorrento, in a picturesque and cozy facility where this liquor is made according to an artisan process.

We resumed the path until we reached to Amalfi. There we took a boat, which show us wonderful views along the coast. There are beautiful landscapes as you can see in the pictures which I leave you on Flickr.

There are many experiences to live in this wonderful region in the southern of Italy. We are looking forward to returning.

I wish you enjoy the album “Amalfi y Costa Amalfitana”.

The Pygmy seahorse Denise (Hippocampus denise) is smaller than the known "bargibanti", reaching only 2.4 cm the longest specimens identified. It tends to be less fleshy and have fewer bumps than the latter, which gives your skin a much softer appearance. This has a variation of colors that mimic that of the gorgonians that host them, the most common being red, yellow, brown and orange. Unlike the Bargibanti Hipocampus that only lives in Gorgonians of the genus "Muricella", Denise has been observed in numerous different species of gorgonians, rather than simply inhabiting one in particular.

The Hippocampus Denise has been observed at depths of up to -90 meters (-295 ft). The photographed specimen was presumably in a "Gorgonia Muricella plectana" about –35 meters deep (-115 ft).

Based on the fact that my macro lens, an Olympus M.Zuiko digital ED 60 mm, was set with the focus lock scaled to 1: 1, I could easily calculate its size later on an image processor, giving me a very approximate length to 12 mm !!

So far seven species of the pygmy seahorse have been described, plus another that is pending classification.

Conservation: Pygmy seahorses depend solely and exclusively on their host gorgonians, the destruction of a gorgonia for fishing reasons, anchors and non-respectful divers, entails the death of this beautiful and curious inhabitant of the depths.

I was trying to practice something I read recently about shooting following the movement of an object or person (pan shot), The May rain allowed me to experiment a little. One recommendation is required the use of a tripod to prevent vertical movement, this time did not have a tripod with me, I hope for the next do better.

So... don't worry, be happy... :D

The path

"Many times we find our destiny on the road we take to avoid it"

That phrase is so interesting. When I was in my senior year, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to study in college. I've always been very interested in science and the processes that we have created to understand the universe, yet I was so interested in graphic design and computing technology.

While I once went to accompany a friend who was studying Biotechnology to pay her bills in the college, I could step into a class and hear what they were saying. They were talking about the different types of viruses that exist, and how each has mechanisms to invade and colonize the cells and initiate their replication processes. I was amazed, it seemed so interesting and so attractive to understand how it all really happened. That was the moment I decided that it would consider a scientific career! I graduated and practiced my profession for about 2 years, studying and understanding plant diseases, and finally, today, I am in the place that I avoided (unintentionally) from the beginning.

After all, I'm doing what makes me feel happy, and that includes photography, share and teach about science and also history. Why I have not put limits and follow the standards and recommendations of others who do not want, and profess a life of happiness nonexistent.

So... don't worry... be happy :D

Tocar assuntos relacionados a problemas de abastecimento de água potável;

Aumentar a consciência pública sobre a importância de conservação, preservação e proteção da água, fontes e suprimentos de água potável;
