I have always found the raven to be a mystical and much maligned bird. Highly intelligent, beautiful in flight, yet highly opportunistic like so many other predatory animals. A joy to photograph up close with they sheen and expressiveness. This fellow was calling atop an F-150 in the parking lot of the Juneau docks when I happened to wander by in search of eagles on the other side of the road. Juneau was g good place for pictures - I could have stayed much longer than the day I did.

To kill someone and never need a weapon fired.

Sometimes, it is enough just in a lesser form.

For example: A word, a gesture, a look, (depending on the sensitivity

of the, "victim"), something said, something done, directly or indirectly

can be enough to harm and/or kill someone.

The noble Eagle is a powerful killer, but she would only kill to feed herself or her children. The Jackals and Coyotes kill for play even with their victims already wounded and dying, they then would feed upon them as prey. The worst are the Worms and the Maggots that

eat Animal Carcasses.

I have met in my lifetime so far, small and big killers.

Some were big and powerful killers and some were small killers that

hid around my friends, relatives, partners, and those I love.

Fortunately, I always identified and recognized them through their

repugnant and repulsive smell.

So, my Gioia Mia, take care to recognize that smell and protect yourself too.

Have not seen'em for a while, and when the couple appeared I happened to had my old Nikon D3300 attached to the 300/2.8 (a tank more then a lens). Not my first choice of house when it comes to BIF, but this one was kind enough to inspect me at a low speed fly by at the right distance - he almost filled the frame.

I wasn't in the mode to shoot anything but glad he came by, I felt less depressed after encounter this couple. Love ravens.

I managed to capture this portrait of this Raven at the Hope Slide site where it had been forced to the ground by a pair of crows.

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,

And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Shall be lifted - nevermore!

(last verse from "The Raven" by Egar Allan Poe)

Happy Halloween to all of you!

The Details: Ephemeral Skye

"Elegance cannot be lost, merely transformed. It breathes through the ruins, wanders and whispers its way through the cracks. It paints itself along the petals of each rose, each curling graceful vine where it climbs along the walls. Magic still breathes in this place and welcomes those who would walk once active streets. If one explores long enough, perhaps they will find the long-lost jewel from a fairy noble's coat. They may fancy they can almost hear the music echoing through great halls where sunlight and shadow now preside over a dance no longer seen.

They cannot see him any longer, but he is still here. He still walks the avenues. Bare feet move from archway to sanctuary, remembering what it was before that fateful decline into memory took over the land. Oracles have always had their place throughout history, a profession which houses no prejudice about race or creed. They say when you are born blind your other senses strengthen to compensate for that missing sight.

Oh, but he has always seen the most wondrous and terrible things, even without the aid of his eyes...

He prophesied the greatness of Raven's Perch and the avian creatures honoring such a name could be found about him when he walked. They guided the path of his feet, the sound of their call proclaiming if safety or danger rested for him up ahead. He saw great joy. He saw a hundred births and marriages before they ever took place. He lived within the future while his feet stood in the present. They celebrated his vision. Wine soaked the ground in jubilant offering to the gods when he spoke of their prosperity; the fires burned bright and high in the fields.

As with all fairy tales, there is a time to live and there is a time to rest. The vision came as all others. Eyes fluttered behind the mask he wore to protect an unseeing gaze from a bright sun. A slender frame bowed before the greatness of his gift until his knee touched the stone floor. Lips parted and a voice sweet and ancient as the gods' came forth in song. The melody was haunted, filled with an eloquent sorrow that wound its way through the halls and the streets. It caressed over the roses and the fluted ears of his own people, waking them from their slumber and calling them from their work. All heads rose to listen and even the trees knelt before the message.

The mists came, and with them - Change. Change is inevitable. Now, roses rule the city. They whisper of an elegance and beauty that will never truly fade, no matter how high and thick the ivy weaves itself across the stone.

They cannot see him any longer, but he is still here. If one listens closely, they may still hear his voice upon the wind. He sings to them the mysteries of once was. He whispers to them of the change which is yet to come."

Ravens are well known for their large brains (among birds) and subsequent tool use. They mainly manufacture probes out of twigs and wood (and sometimes metal wire) to catch or impale larvae.

are the exceptions

Can you see the raven?

With the recent forecasts for spectacular aurora displays being a non-event in Whitehorse, I headed out to Kluane Lake this week in search of clearer skies and hopefully a bit of a show. The first 2 nights were clear but no lights appeared. The third night was extremely windy and overcast, but around 3:00 a.m. the cloud cover opened overhead, revealing this spectacular display. The red/violet and purple colours are the result of charged particles interacting with different gases in the upper atmosphere.

RAVEN is our word for inspiration this week at Take a Word and that reminded me of the one I saw in my garden the other day!

At the wind's first gust

Tower without it's raven

Crumbles into dust

Bricks and mortar fall

Lost is the black haired raven

No tower stands tall

It's base blown apart

By silence when once was song

Raven did depart

Black feather remains

Memory to the raven

In the heart it stains

My wolf Raven favourite distraction :p

I went out this evening to shoot the sunset, but came back with photos of "you know who."

This raven dropped in for a drink at the local waterhole while I was busy trying to photograph parrots

Raven loves to grab things out of the air...this is a split second after nabbing a snowball.

A raven and a carrion crow grapple in mid air

Camera settings were all wrong for this kind of shooting - ISO100 (from shooting landscape/waterfalls) resulted in a 1/10s exposure at f/5.6 here. And a 85mm lens usually isn't considered a "birding" lens anyway. The bird was about 5ft away for this image.

Used as a book cover here: Graham Joyce SCHNEESTILLE German Edition - the original is here but uses a different cover image.

Looking down at Lochan nan Cat

My guide notes stressed the potential seriousness of the scramble up An Stuc but there was no mention Ravens Gully. I thought I was off route, but nope this seriously steep grassy drop was the usual way down from Bealach Dubh.

A raven and (possibly) a "Western Kingbird" having a bit of a chat.

3 years and I still can't read his letters...
