The social structure of elephants is complex, varying by gender, and population dynamics. Adult elephants form matriarchal (female—led) societies. Adult males are usually solitary.

 

2.Males

Adult male elephants are solitary in nature but may associate with other bulls (adult males) in small, unstable groups. Males will leave the family unit (natal unit) between 12 and 15 years of age.

•Bulls that associate in small groupings have a hierarchal—ranking social structure. Leaders, determined by age and strength, protect the front and rear of the herd. More docile (quiet—natured) bulls do not seek leadership roles, but serve as stabilizing members within the group. Hierarchical roles are re—established and re—adjusted whenever a male leaves or enters the group.

•Although primarily solitary in nature, bulls will associate with non—natal family units (family units to which they are not related). Bulls do not have preferences for specific family units and will randomly move to different groupings daily and even hourly looking for reproductively receptive females. The bulls’ nomadic (wandering) social system allows them to maximize reproductive potential. With this system, a single bull can potentially find up to 30 mates in a year, as opposed to fathering four calves in three years, if he associates with only one family unit

UPDATE-- JULY 2013 After years of research the real facts about CWD tell a whole different story than what we are accustomed to hearing.

For those of you who may not be aware of what is going on at SNP, there are MANY Whitetail deer running around with ear tags or radio collars on their necks, due to an ill-timed study for detection of Chronic Wasting Disease. What are park officials thinking? The rut is about to get underway and these animals experience much stress during this time of year, both physically and mentally, especially the mature Bucks. This would be a lot more digestible if only the smaller Bucks were collared, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Plus take a look at the size of that hardware!

 

On their 'planning' site, they claim this: Public input is very important to the compliance process and to Park Managers of Shenandoah National Park. The public will have several opportunities to comment on the park's Chronic Wasting Disease Plan. But instead of allowing for any public input, they took to the woods last week, tranquilizing Deer at random and tagging/collaring them. There has not been a public meeting regarding this matter since 2007! Karen Beck-Herzog, Public Affairs Officer at Shenandoah National Park, is stating that "We expect to have public meetings sometime late fall or early winter." But...this is after the fact....go figure. Public input is very important? Really? Yeah right! Why attend a meeting now, the freakin' egg has been laid!

What Is Chronic Wasting Disease?

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a contagious neurological disease affecting deer, elk, and

moose. It causes a characteristic spongy degeneration of the brains of infected animals resulting

in emaciation, abnormal behavior, loss of bodily functions and death.

And I find this to be an interesting objective included in this assessment plan:

In backcountry and wilderness areas, allow the deer population to be regulated by natural processes to the greatest extent possible.

 

Don't get me wrong, I applaud the efforts of the NPS to do testing for CWD, but during and after the rut is a poor decision, as well as putting radio collars on the mature Bucks who have a high ranking social status. This period of the year is a very stressful time for Whitetails. I have seen Bucks so wore down and beat down during and after the rut that I was not sure if some would make it into January. The mating season is a critical component and calendar period in the Whitetail world. What the hell are they thinking?

A 2005 international survey of self esteem published in the highest ranking social psychology journal found that Japan had the lowest of all 53 nations surveyed (Schmitt & Allik, 2005). The US had the 5th highest self esteem. US self-esteem is 25% higher than that in Japan. This rises to approximately 60% higher when compared to a North American Caucasian population (Heine, Lehman, Markus, & Kitayama, 1999). Psychologists who believe in the universality of the importance of self-esteem, believe that these results explain various social problems in Japan (古荘, 2009). Cultural-psychologists, however, argue that Self-esteem does not occupy a central position in the position in the psychology of the Japanese, nor explains Japanese behaviour or psychological processes. Considering these again, in the Japanese case, while Maslow argues that ego needs (and self esteem) are required for self-actualisation, innovation at which Japan ranks in top 15% of countries (The Global Innovation Index 2014.), shows no correlation (r=0.07) with comparison of self-esteem across cultures (Schmitt & Allik, 2005). While in the West birds of a feather flock together and friendships are formed between the like-minded, and notwithstanding the fact that a similar saying exists in Japanese (類は友と呼ぶ types call friends), cross cultural research on the similarity between friends and others finds that while US subjects rate their friends more similar to themselves in their actions and preferences, the Japanese do not (Heine, Foster, & Spina, 2009). Similarly, while Americans identify with their homogeneous groups and denigrate outgroups, Japanese groups are congnised as networks containing mutually cooperating variety and are disinterested in denigrating outgroups (Yuki, 2003). Japanese make fewer risky financial decisions preferring to invest in neighbourhood banks (Hyoudo, 2011), and while the Japanese do gamble the most popular form of Japanese gambling pachinko provides "escape" (Brooks, Ellis, & Lewis, 2008) involving few decision, where gamblers might brandish their self-esteem. Japanese hospitality (Omotenashi) is a psychological service where hosts provide taste, knowledge, and mental relaxation (星野, 1991, p35) and Japanese guests often enjoy 'depending' (土居, 1971, p4) on a sensitive host to make choices for them.

Meet victim J2 - another radio collared mature Whitetail Buck at the onset of the 2012 rut, who is already sporting a swollen neck as most of the older Bucks do at this time of year (due to high testosterone levels), as they are the main players in the rut and have a high social ranking within the herds. To me, that collar looks pretty damn tight and uncomfortable.
