took a side step to the VLA yesterday. Very interesting place and worth the trip.

Along highway 395 in inyo county stand these radio telescopes. I think they are neat :-)

Sentinel Tree and the landmark Radio-Telescope (the Dish) at Stanford Weekend Acres. A favorite of walkers and runners. A quiet respite from the high energy living of the Bay Area. Took me only 40 years to diligently search its locale, as the dish is clearly visible from i280 to tens of thousands of motorists daily.

Thank you for visiting - with gratitude! Fave if you like it, add comments below, like the Facebook page, order beautiful HDR prints at qualityHDR.com.

The women were playing Mahjong at home, so I escaped for a sunset photoshoot. I decided to go to the Stanford Dish, a park in the hills behind Stanford University. I arrived at 7:33 pm, the park closes for entrance at 7:30 pm. A police woman was guarding the entrance and refused to let me in. On the map I have seen that there was another entrance to the park on the west side. I drove there, and luckily someone just came out and held the gate open for me - the gate can only be opened from the inside after hours. I think it was worth it.

I processed a balanced and a deep HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance.

This shot got "ruined" but it's very colorful nevertheless so I kept it.

Jodrell Bank 10th May 2015-1

View it large on black! ;-)))

The night after the full moon I was thinking the Very Large Array might make an ideal subject to test long exposures on the D300. This image is a composite of three different exposures looking down the train tracks that are used to position the 27 independent radio antennae into position.

I have to say that the D300 is impressing me more all the time. Has anyone else noticed how chromatic aberrations seem to be incredibly limited on lenses that show them on other digital SLRs? Also, for long exposure night work, I think folks are going to love how clean the shadow areas and blacks are coming out. Previously the darks were always troublesome for me on my D70, particularly for night shots so this will be a huge improvement for me.

A poster I made for a colleague's farewell gift.

Check out the large version to see ALL the stars!

A first attempt at astro-photography, under the expert guidance of Messrs Dayglo and Aardvark. It was a perfect night for it, and where better to watch the stars than at Jodrell Bank observatory?

I'm chuffed that you can see the whole of the Plough in this (and Polaris, the north star), and the red light on the tip of the Lovell telescope antenna is the perfect tiny cherry on top of a ruddy great telescopic cake. Ding dong!

Magdalena, New Mexico.

This huge dish is one of 27 that are part of the VLA (Very Large Array), which is a radio astronomy observatory located about 40 miles west of Socorro where they scan the universe looking for E.T. As far as I know they haven't located him or any others, yet. It's also where the movie Contact, many television commercials and a few music videos have been shot.

Parkes Radio Telescope, NSW, Australia.

Diameter: 64 metres.

In operation for fifty years and still one of the world's premier single dish radio telescopes, operated by CSIRO as part of the Australia Telescope National Facility.

43 meter polar-aligned radio telescope peeking over the trees at the Green Bank Observatory looks almost otherworldly.

Part of a recent blog post on the National Radio Astronomy Observatory facility in Green Bank

This is a straightened, cropped version of an earlier shot.

The moon rose about an hour and a half after astronomical twilight and kept the sky a bright blue. The tiny bit of white on the back cinder cone (summit of Mauna Kea) is one of the observatories on the mountain (Gemini Observatory). The foreground radio telescope is one of the ten scopes that form the Very Long Base Array.

Please see this image for processing details. For even more details about how this was created, please see my blog.

This effort spanned over 8 hours (not including a total of 12 hours of driving!), 160 exposures, each at 13 mm, ISO 250, 177 seconds, f/4. The moon rose during the exposure. The radio telescope was moving quite a lot during the night as the timelapse animation shows. I picked a single frame for the foreground.

Equipment: Slik travel tripod, Canon 40D, 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 EFS, Intervalometer, custom battery.

The observatory's 305-m (1,001 ft) radio telescope is the largest single-aperture telescope ever constructed. It carries out three major areas of research: radio astronomy, aeronomy (using both the 305-m telescope and the observatory's lidar facility), and radar astronomy observations of solar system objects.

Based at and often known as Jodrell Bank this is Manchester University's elderly radio telescope - still the world's third largest and formerly the largest. For an idea of the size check out the people standing at the right of the frame under the tower.

To remember Willy Deville he's Died 8. Aug. 2009

The man with the smoke voice is dead

The breakthrough came in 1977 with his band Mink DeVille, since the'80s he toured solo around the world: Willy DeVille was the same as for ballads blues rock with Latin and country influences. With 58 years of the musicians on Friday in a hospital in New York died of cancer. That gave his wife, Nina known. R.I.P.

polaroid night photography at the very large array (vla) outside of datil, new mexico.

day one of 'Roid Week 2008

if you are interested in how i did this, it's kinda easy...

a) set your polaroid sx-70/680/690 on a tripod. they don't lock too well to the tripod btw, be careful about overtightening.

b) set focus to manual and focus on infinity.

c) cover the photocell with a finger while pressing the shutter.

d) after the shutter has fired, open the front of the camera using the release (like you use to take out/put in film). this turns off the electronics and locks the shutter open. as soon as you are doing this, the film is being exposed....

e) start timing..... when you think you've gone long enough, close the front of the camera and then fire the shutter button again. in a short moment the film will eject.

f) wait... look at the pola with a flashlight, or even better in the car/house. reshoot as needed. i tried basing the exposure off the D3, but it didn't work. reciprocity failure, i suppose....

oh! and the reason that the dish is lit up like that was that the (more-or-less) full moon had just risen a couple of minutes before the shot. the colors in the sky are from the twilight, not light pollution.

If any of you have been watching the BBC 2 Stargazing Live shows this week then this place will be familiar. This is the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, I visited the area back in 2011 and passed these cows in the field and did a U turn to go back and get this image of nature at one with the search for ET...

Had a visit to Cheshire on Sunday 01/05/2011 and caught a different angle on the Jodrell Bank radio telescope.

Ok.... Leaf Peepers is a term usually reserved for people who drive around admiring Mother Nature at her very best - mid to late autumn when the leaves are at their peak colors.

This is my little twist on the term... :)

The leaf and overall texture are mine, the trees are Skeletal Mess Tree Brushes and the Radio Telescope is from Stock Exchange. The door is from yewenyi and the pathway to the door is from Brenda-Starr. Thanks all!!
