He appearsto have also acted as amanuensis to Bacon between 1621-6, buthad little respect for the latters philosophy. In 1634 he becametutor to his first pupils eldest son, the third Earl of Devonshire, with whom he spent the next three years abroad. Here he formedfriendships with Galileo, Gassendi, and especially with Mersenne, inwhose circle he became acquainted with the speculative movementinitiated by Descartes. His thoughts were thus turned into philo-sophical channels ; he began to work out a theory of sensation, and to evolve a complete system, which he intended to publish inthree parts, De Corpore, De Honiine, and De Cive. At the outbreakof the Civil War, fearing the consequences of a political pamphletwhich he had written, entitled The Elements of Laiv, Naturaland Politique, he fled abroad. He remained in Paris, and for

Thishowever, brought him little favour, as his unorthodox religiousopinions were distasteful both to the Puritans and to the Royalistdivines, through whose influence he had already been forbidden theCourt of Charles II. He was even charged with having writtenthe book as a sop to Cromwell, mainly on the ground that he ex-cuses those who had submitted and compounded for their estates—a fact easily intelligible, since his patron, the Earl of Devonshire, hadtaken this course. He was also accused of atheism and blasphemy, and achieved through the assaults of various ecclesiastics consider-able fame as a heretic. The remainder of his

Full ofsympathy and humanity, he passed from tragicscenes of history to pure humour, as in ThePrison Pet, The Trio, The Tussle for theKeg ; or to comedies in little, touched with lightfancy and the joy of life, like A Storm in a Tea-cup, Rejected Addresses, Two Strings to herBow, and The World went very well then ; orto happy domestic themes, such as The Soloand The Step. In George Fox refusing to take the Oath, and in The Duke of Monmouth and James II.,he depicted scenes based on historical foundation. But in many pictures, and among them his finestpictures, he did not limit himself to the narrowbounds of a definite historical episode. He gave thespkit of history, its background and atmosphere, and painted those happenings that underlie andgive rise to great historical facts. a jest across their squire at her more coyand demure companion. There is fresh buoyancyin the treatment of a theme full of unforced, un-conscious nature. Rich in pure humour is RejectedAddresses (1870). An elderly suitor, of a floridcountenance, wearing a blue coat with gilt buttons,is on his knees, and receives with dismay therespectful curtsey with which his proposal is refused. For this sweet little maid he was rather too old.Trifling, perhaps, in subject, the picture has allPetties charm of colour and fluent brushwork. His varied accomplishment and unhesitatingprogress find proof in his Academy exhibits of thefollowing years. His principal work in 1871 was*A Scene in the Temple Gardens. That thescene is based on Shakespeares Henry VI, andhas no actual place in history is of little moment.Round the rose-bushes are gathered the figures ofSuffolk, Somerset, Warwick, Vernon, and Plan-tagenet, clad in the long fur-trimmed robes of their REJECTED ADDRESSES (_Size of original, 27 X 38.)

The Duke of Somerset, boldly fronting him, gathers a red rose, and com-mands the supporters of the Duke of Lancasterto do the like. As they pluck the flowers, theyprovoke Warwicks prophecy: This brawl to-day,Grown to this faction in the Temple-Garden^Shall send between the red rose and the whiteA thousand souls to death and deadly night. The thoughtful lawyer in the rear seems to foreseethe disastrous future. The work is impressivefrom the air of dignity with which the subject hasbeen invested, and gains in impressiveness fromthe sombre and frowning walls of the Templebuildings that form a grey background to the richcostumes. Two lighter works, The Love Song and The Pedlar, were shown in the same year. The first is a figure of a troubadour, exhibiting theartists powerful command of varying tones of redin the rich robe which his subject wears

Professor Bernstein’s work as a constitutional historian has made historical scholarship accessible to a wider audience through his lauded publications and dedication to teaching.Professor Bernstein graduated from Amherst College in 1977 with a B.A. magna cum laude in American Studies and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1980. After three years of practicing law, he left the legal profession to pursue a Ph.D. in history at New York University. Since 1983 he has been a member of the New York University Law School’s Legal History Colloquium.

Professor Bernstein was a visiting part-time lecturer in history at Rutgers University–Newark in 1998; he joined New York Law School as an assistant adjunct professor in 1991, teaching American Legal History and Law & Literature. From 1997 to 1998 he was the Daniel M. Lyons Visiting Professor of History at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. In 2007 he was named a distinguished adjunct professor at New York Law School.

From 1984 to 1987 Professor Bernstein was Research Curator for the Constitution Bicentennial Project of The New York Public Library. Among the products of this project was his first book, Are We to Be a Nation? The Making of the Constitution (Harvard University Press, 1987). From 1987 to 1990 he was the staff historian of the New York City Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, and from 1989 to 1990 he was Research Director of the New York State Commission on the Bicentennial of the Constitution.

Professor Bernstein continued to distinguish himself as an author with Amending America: If We Love the Constitution So Much, Why Do We Keep Trying to Change It? (Times Books/Random House, 1993; paperback, University Press of Kansas, 1995), a history of the constitutional amending process spanning the period from the origins of the Constitution in 1787-1789 through the early 1990s.

He also published the biography Thomas Jefferson (Oxford University Press, 2003) and Bolling v. Bolling: Law and the Legal Profession in Pre-Revolutionary America (Huntington Library Press, 1997), co-edited with Barbara Wilcie Kern and Bernard Schwartz. Gordon S. Wood’s review in The New York Times called the biography "the best short biography of Jefferson ever written." A young-adult version, Thomas Jefferson and the Revolution of Ideas, was published in 2004 in the Oxford Portraits series.

Other publications include "Charting the Bicentennial," a review essay that appeared in the December 1987 Columbia Law Review; "The Sleeper Wakes: The History and Legacy of the Twenty-Seventh Amendment," a study that appeared in the December 1992 issue of the Fordham Law Review; and the historiographical introduction to Law as Culture and Culture as Law: Essays in Honor of John Phillip Reid, a volume published by Madison House in 2000 honoring eminent legal historian John Phillip Reid, the Russell Niles Professor Emeritus of Law at New York University School of Law.

Denmark, a man of unparalleled dullness, but forwhom she entertained as much affection as her somewhat tepid andwholly unimaginative temperament was capable of conceiving. Asthe Duchess of Marlborough said at his death in 1708, I believe shefancied she loved him. Nevertheless Annes married life wasconsistently unhappy. Her attempts to obtain public honour andrecognition for her husband always met with failure, and she waseven unable to secure him against the open assaults of politicalopponents. Though she gave birth to many children, all died ininfancy, except the Duke of Gloucester, who died in 1700, at the ageof eleven. During her fathers reign, Anne was on friendly ratherthan affectionate terms with him, and fell even more than beforeunder the influence of Sarah Jennings, now Lady Churchill and oneof the ladies of her bedchamber. Their famous correspondenceunder the names Mrs. Morley and Mrs. Freeman began 1684, andwhen the crisis of 1688 arose, Anne was persuaded by the Churchills

After a triimiphalprogress through the Midland counties, she returned to greetWilliam and Mary. During the first years of their reign, however,Anne was conspicuously neglected by the King, and seems to havebeen bitterly jealous of her sisters elevation to the throne. Owingto a suspicion of treachery which Marlborough had incurred, shewas compelled to dismiss Mrs. Freeman from her service, thoughtheir mutual regard and their correspondence continued unabated, while her relations with the Queen, her sister, never became anywarmer. The latter died childless in 1694, and Annes position wasimmediately altered. She was now courted as much as she hadbeen previously sligh

H OF PATH BETWEEX KARMAXli AND TOLTI. Iau at a far higher level than at present; or rather, they point to anuplifting of the whole region, while the river went on cutting its valleyby erosion and maintaining more or less the same level throughout. The various levels of the alluvial deposits along the cliffs show thatthe upheaval was not continuous, uninterrupted and regular. Oestreich Tn. Thomson, Journey to the Karakoram Pux-t. Jour. lioy. (leog. Sac. 19, 1849, p. 25 ;ScHLAGiNTWEiT, Joiir. Asiut. Sor. of Bengal 26, 1857 (cited by Burraixl). 96 Chapter \ll. holds tliat the whole valley between Dras and Skardu was first cutthrough, then filled up with detritus to about 600 feet above the presentlevel, and then once more dug out.^ According to him the presentvalley would be a recent formation, and the river would be still activelycutting its way. However this may be, the immense geological forceshave made of the upper Indus one of the longest and wildest valleyson the face of the earth.

THE INDUS VAIJ.EY ABOVE KARMANO. At first sight the huge sedimentary deposits, often divided intostrata, seem to indicate that the valley was once filled with a series oflake basins. Sir A. Cunningham and Sir Martin Conway are of opinionthat such gigantic sedimentary formations can be explained in no otherway. Thomson had, however, already noted that this simple theorywould explain neither the extraordinary extension of the sediments—which are to be found with unvarying characteristics throughout thewhole of the Indus valley—nor their immense thickness at various points, (Godwin Austen also mentions this succession of phenomena. See Qeog. Jour. 26, 1905, p. 245. The Indus Vallev. 97 nor their frequent appearance at the mouth of tributary valleys, where they often take the form of deltas. Drew beUeves the originof the deposits to be fluvial, and very ingeniously explains the stratifica-tion of the clay as caused by the periodic muddiiiess of the waters andthe increase in their volum

What you call here a statutory rule of rate making youmust mean a law, an absolute unvarying law and this board, what doyou call it, not the Interstate Commerce Commission, but your com-mission—the transportation board, if the transportation board fixesthe rule as to rates that must be charged in order to make the 6 percent on the property investment account, is it not absolute upon therate-making body to pro\dde rates that will not fall below that forthe traffic district? h, 1892. Thehorns measured on the straight 22|- inches, on the curve 24f inches. The other male, which was a smaller animal but had as good horns, andone of the females (the one preserved) were shot on the cliffs north ofKarembwis, Kabwiri, east coast of Lake Mweru, July 27th, 1892. The horns of this male measured on the straight also 22|- inches, on thecurve 24^ inches. The second female I shot for meat on the left bank of the Choma Kiver, about due north of Lake Mweru ya Matipa —the Mweru of Mud, as thenatives know the smaller Lake Mweru to the east of Lake Mweru proper—October 27th, 1892. The skins of these animals subsequently lost much oftheir dark colouring, a considerable quantity of the hair coming out (as itwill do with the very movable coats of Waterbuck) and the remainderbecoming lighter in drying. Our figure of this Waterbuck (Plate XXXIV.) has been taken by Mr. Smitfrom the typical male specimen now in the British Museum. August, 189G. THE BOOK OF ANTE LOPES,PL. XXX\^.

I founded this sculpture inserted in the facade of the H.R. Giger museum in Gruyeres, Switzerland. There's even a bar!
