Although I’ve been really busy last week shooting every day for a couple of clients, this Friday I got up very early (5am early!) and headed towards the Empty Quarter at the border between UAE and Saudi Arabia. The Empty Quarter (Rub’ Al Khali in Arabic) is the largest desert in the world and spreads between the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Yemen. It’s a beautiful place, but can be very tough to conquer.

We were in four cars, camping over night and doing a 20km desert route on Friday. It was tough going in a few spots, but with the help of an experienced friend, his awesome raised Jeep Wrangler and a few other useful desert toys, we managed to climb to the top of the dunes to enjoy the beautiful views below us.

As I’ve mentioned in a couple of previous posts, I’m still playing with my tilt-shift lens, experimenting with tilting the focus point. I quite like the result in this one, but I would be interested to hear your opinion.

This looks like a composite, but is actually a single shot. It's for the cover of the Quarter's new CD. If I had a bigger studio I would have been able to blow out the background to avoid the shadows, but I'll get rid of some of the more troublesome ones in Photoshop later.

This the first session with Pocket Wizards instead of my trusty Skyports. Lighting was 2 Sunpak 383's either side and slightly behind the band fired into softboxes with the front removed. Front light was a bare Canon 430EX.

I had a fair idea of how Chris was going to jump, so I got Ivan (on the left) to lean over a little so he'd be peeking through the gap.

This was like the second take and it worked out pretty good. Working with musicians is pretty good sometimes because when I count them in for the shot, they're on it. For some people it's like "1-2-3...blink!"

I sold this camera and shortly after it was on its way to Kentucky, I missed it. A lot. It was great for street photography and I liked the selective colours feature. A Nikon 1 S1 Mirrorless. I paid a good price that included two lenses, UV lens filters, an extra battery and case. What was I thinking? I actually liked it better than my Fuji X100S which I also sold but do not miss one bit. Come to think of it, I sold the Nikon to help pay for the Fuji. How’s that for ridiculousness? Waaaaa...

Built in the heartland of Belfast's former shipyard, Titanic Quarter is a large scale waterfront regeneration project. It features historic maritime landmarks, the Titanic Studios where Tom Hanks 'City of Embers' was filmed and more recently is the main studio where HBO's acclaimed tv series 'Game of Thrones' is filmed.

The largest and most iconic building here is Titanic Belfast, the worlds largest Titanic Museum. The £97M attraction welcomes 800,000 visitors a year. Architecturally it's outstanding, it captures the spirit of the shipyards and is clad in 3000 silver shards which glisten in the sunlight and make it also appear like a giant iceberg. Walking underneath it you get a sense of scale of the mighty ship as it stands at 38m tall, the same height as Titanic's hull. Outside the outlines of the Titanic and her sister ship the Olympic are shown full size. Nearby is the SS Nomadic, White Star Lines only remaining ship which ferried passengers to the Titanic when it was moored off shore.

We also see the iconic cranes of Harland and Wolff named Samson and Goliath. Shipbuilding has long been in decline here but the shipyard now carries out more work in engineering, ship repair, bridge construction and oil rig repairs

Quarters and dimes are a big part of my photography fund. When I bought my Nikon D7200 body last summer, change made up over half of the total price. (And yes, I had been saving a long time)! Now I'm saving for the lens I want.

This is the Macross Quarter from Macross frontier in Lego form. It's fully transformable. Enjoy!

The Rub' al Khali (Arabic: "الربع الخالي‎" "the empty quarter") or Empty Quarter is the largest sand desert in the world, encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula, including most of Saudi Arabia and areas of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The desert covers some 650,000 square kilometres (250,000 sq mi).

The desert is 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long, and 500 kilometres (310 mi) wide. Its surface elevation varies from 800 metres (2,600 ft) in the southwest to around sea level in the northeast. The terrain is covered with sand dunes with heights up to 250 metres (820 ft), interspersed with gravel and gypsum plains. The sand is a reddish-orange color due to the presence of feldspar. There are also brackish salt flats in some areas, such as the Umm al Samim area on the desert's eastern edge.

Desertification has increased through the millennia. Before desertification made the caravan trails leading across the Rub' al Khali so difficult, the caravans of the frankincense trade crossed now virtually impassable stretches of wasteland, until about AD 300. It has been suggested that Ubar, or Iram, a lost city, depended on such trade. The traces of camel tracks, unidentifable on the ground, appear in satellite images. More recently, tribal populations were also present in certain parts of the Empty Quarter, with the largest in the Najran region. A few road links were connected with these tribal settlements to the water resource and oil production centers.

The industrial scaffolding within the Silo Park Wynyard Quarter Playspace gives a fantastic view over the Wynyard Quarter and Auckland. The top floor of the facility is also a great place to watch people. I always walk up the top of the Wynyard Quarter Playspace.

Rub' al Khali or The Empty Quarter is not only the largest sand desert in the world. It is also one of the most awe inspiring and humbling sights on our planet.

Helicopter ride over this enormous vastness presented me with more photo opportunities in one hour than any landscape I've ever visited with.

The enchanting dance of the sand dunes in the early morning light is an irresistible subject of every photographer .

A real quick shot today, the circle of light to the right of the picture is my car (still running!) as I stopped, ran up a path, took as many pics as I could, before jumping back in the car and carrying on. I actually got a few shots so might try a few more 1 minute photo shoots!

I loved just walking the streets and alleys of Charleston in and around the French Quarter where zoning laws require architectural purity. Here you will find tree lined cobble stone streets with parking on alternate sides as in Manhattan.

Since I like the side without parked cars I choose to duplicate the better side to show you. Seriously if you have not been to Charleston you must. Take a camera.
