The Rub' al Khali (Arabic: الربع الخالي), which translates as Empty Quarter in English, is one of the largest sand deserts in the world, encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula, including southern Saudi Arabia, and areas of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The desert covers some 650,000 square kilometres (250,000 sq mi) (the area between long. 44°30′ −56°30′E., and lat. 16°30′ −23°00′N), more than the combined land areas of the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
The desert is 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long, and 500 kilometres (310 mi) wide, and is neither inhabited nor traversed by the Bedouins. After Pedro Páez's presence in the late Sixteenth Century, the first documented journeys by Westerners were made by Bertram Thomas in 1931 and St. John Philby in 1932. Between 1946 and 1950 Wilfred Thesiger crossed the area several times and mapped large parts including the mountains of Oman.
Summer temperatures of nearly 55 °C (131 °F) and dunes over 330 metres (1,100 ft) make Rub' al Kali one of the most forbidding environments on Earth. Fauna includes arachnids and rodents while plants live throughout the Empty Quarter. As an ecoregion, it falls within the Arabian Desert and East Saharo-Arabian xeric shrublands.

Quarter past four and I'm feeling alright
I'd love to close my eyes, but I can never rest my mind
Thinkin' where I'm going to and where I've been
While a thousand other worries are floating in the wind
And I can't keep them all away
But it turns out fine
It turns out fine
And I can't keep them all away
But it turns out fine
It turns out fine
Never really thought I'd get to see this day
Where my heart is in the future, while my body rides the wave
Thankful every day I get to rise again
When my eyes start to open as the sunlight warms my skin
And I have troubles every day
But it turns out fine
It turns out fine
And I fight to keep them all away
But it turns out fine
It turns out fine
Café Du Monde is a Vieux Carré (French Quarter) icon. Just below Jackson Sqaure at Decatur, it is open 24 hours, serving up chicory-cut cafe au lait and beignets (powered sugar coated fried fritters) to locals and visitors alike. Someone told me that Café Du Monde only lost their awning in Katrina, but they didnt know if that was because of Jesus or the devil, because both are known to drink at Du Monde.

You'd think that this particular quarter pipe would be a physical impossibility, but when chocolate is involved, anything is possible.

I did a search on "tower optical" — the manufacturer of the "American Icon" binocular viewers "used and enjoyed by the public in hundreds of scenic areas across the United States and Canada."
My search pulled up only 157 hits. Does that qualify as a cliché? I bet there are a LOT more though. I think the problem is: "What the heck do you call these things?" Searching on viewer thingy, thingamajigs, doohickeys and whatchamacallit's did not bear fruit! Eventually I stumbled upon it (I was getting pretty close to the end of the internet) .. and now, at last; I'll be able to sleep tonight!
One of my favorite versions of this scene was taken by Jaime973. I sure miss her around Flickr! This image is for her!
We are gearing up for the 25-mile L.A.T.E. Ride through the city streets in Chicago tonight! Starts at midnight and ends up at the lakeshore at sunrise! What do you have on tap for your weekend?
Happy Cliché Saturday!
The Gothic Quarter is so different to the rest of Barcelona. Normally you associate this city with modern architecture and buildings from the genius Antoni Gaudi but this place is much older but still beautiful.

I have been looking for a sunflower field for YEARS. This beautiful field was so close the whole time! This was taken at about 6:30 AM... very foggy and VERY misty-dewey! My jeans and tennis shoes were totally soaked but I enjoyed it a lot. Now...if only I had a macro!
Woot! I just saw it made Explore on 7/25/08 at #380!
