The World Festival of Puppet Theatres, founded in 1961, has continued to increase in scale throughout its fourteen editions. It is thanks to Jacques FELIX, a real enthusiast and tireless talent scout, that the Charleville-Mézières Festival has become the unmissable event for puppeteers, programme planners and visitors from all over the world.

For ten days, life in the whole town revolves around the festival. Many events rooms, sports halls, streets and courtyards are used as venues. All types of techniques, styles and exploring of new ideas are welcome - from string to glove puppets, from shadow to Bunraku, from real objects to onscreen, from small intimate forms to giant puppets… traditional shows alongside the most modern of styles - and viewed by a wide-ranging audience. During the last festival in September 2013, all shows, including the ‘IN’ and the ‘OFF’ and inside and outside, were attended by 160,000 people in the town of Charleville-Mézières, now known as the World Capital of Puppetry Arts.

Indeed, besides the Festival, since 1981, the town has been home to the Institut International de la Marionnette, a permanent place of training, creation and exploring of new ideas and to ESNAM (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette), which since 1987, has taken students from all over the world. UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) has also had its headquarters in Charleville-Mézières since 1980.

The Festival has taken place every three years since 1976 and continues biennially since 2009.

For 60 years Charleville-Mézières has been a privileged place pour the puppetry arts.

First of all, it is a friendship story between young people who met each other in Charleville in difficult moments of the last world war to build and animate together puppets in order to entertain children in the Ardennes.

Indeed, this team of young people had had the opportunity to meet in July 1941 a painter and puppeteer from Lorraine Géo Conde, who taught them how to build and animate some little wooden and rag characters.

In 1961, on the occasion of the Congress of the French Puppeteers, Les Petits Comédiens de Chiffons organized, with the help of the town of Charleville, the first international festival of the puppeteers which gathered theatres from Germany, England, Belgium, France and Luxembourg. Since then, 12 world-wide festivals have taken place in Charleville-Mézières.

In 1981, an International Institute for Puppetry, permanent place for puppetry Arts, was also created.

In 1987, the National College of Puppetry Arts opened its doors.

In 1991, it was the unveiling of the “Big Puppeteer”, gigantic automaton created by Jacques MONESTIER.

With this all, the town of Arthur Rimbaud has become the crossroads of this Art alive and major.

Thus, puppeteers and puppetry friends like to meet during the festivals and in these places, what made the famous Brazilian puppeteer, Alvaro APOCALYPSE say : “Charleville is a Mecca for us and it is a place of holy pilgrimage, and besides I think that each puppeteer should go to a festival in Charleville at least once in his life.”

....spent the morning at Dufan (Fantasy World) and spotted this...

...Ancol, West Java, Indonesia...

Dawn and I got together once again to put on a puppet performance for you all. :)

I wandered through an antique store in Indiana in an attempt to distract myself from things - and found marvelous and strange dolls, along with this puppet with strings. If only that store were in this city ... I had no room in my suitcase to bring anything back besides pictures.

*Peeks in to the Puppet Show* Hmmmmmm Maybe next time....

I made this for Darcy since she couldn't stop talking about Yetis for an entire day.

Cedar Wood is doing what she does best!

Thanks to Hi I'm Kate, I went out today to see if my Justice had Cedar, and I lucked out!

I have been wanting to do this picture for so long. October had me in the mood for some dark and evil imagery...and while this isn't actually evil, it certainly is dark! This dress was made by a very talented artist, Anastasia Every, send from England :) I thought well, if I am going to hold a photo contest with the theme Supernatural, I might as well play the game!

I want to announce a new exhibition I have coming up in December. It is at the Annenberg Space for Photography in LA, and I've written a blog post all about it with pics from a documentary I shot with them for the show. Details here! :) The biggest shock of this show is that I get to exhibit with and meet Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor, who I have long admired as brilliant artists. I'm very excited!

Ok I don't really own the official lego Starkiller figure, so I'd make do with what pieces I had.

Let imagination work wonders with this attempt at one of my favourite characters 'Galen Marek, aka Starkiller' and see him in this interpretation.

In this shot I wanted the notion of Vader standing behind his apprentice, pulling the strings, guiding him and controlling him - master of puppets.

Make me do right or make me do wrong, I'm your puppet

Treat me good and I'll do anything

I'm just a puppet an you hold my string, I'm your puppet

Yeah, I'm your puppet

Walking, talking, living, loving puppet

I'm hanging on a string girl, I'll do anything now

I'm a walking, talking, living, loving puppet

...sometimes i feel like a Puppet on Strings

A dancing puppet doll made of wood

I bet he'd run away one day if he could choose to leave or stay

He's got a string attached to every bone

She's got him round her little finger so she'll never feel alone

Oh sometimes I wonder, did it go

When lots of men had caused his soul

Dreaming of a wonderland

Wakes up and he's a man

Sometimes I wonder, did it go

When lots of men had caused his soul

Dreaming of a wonderland

Wakes up and he's a man

Oh, taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over another man's mind

Oh, taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over his mind

The day of leaving her, has struck his mind

When he sees her smile, he's hypnotized and he can't leave her behind

Looking to his left, there's the door

No need to try, tried it once before

And the bounds tied him beneath the floor

Sometimes I wonder, did it go

When lots of men had caused his soul

Dreaming of a wonderland

Wakes up and he's a man

Sometimes I wonder, did it go

When lots of men had caused his soul

Dreaming of a wonderland

Wakes up and he's a man

Oh, she's taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over another man's mind

Oh, taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over his mind

When they were out to buy her wedding-gown

She wanted nothing but the dress over a hundred thousand pound

But what she wants, she gets, or she will cry

Hits the man with her umbrella

She'll continue till' he dies

Sometimes I wonder, did it go

When lots of men had caused his soul

Dreaming of a wonderland

Wakes up and he's a man

Oh, taking control over another man's mind

Taking control of his mind

Oh, she's taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over another man's mind

Oh, taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over his mind

Oh, she's taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over another man's mind

Oh, taking control over another man's mind

Oh taking control over his mind

"La gente è proprio cattiva"

" Non cattiva. Idiota. E' ben diverso.

Ever since I was a little kid - every one of my shadow puppets looks like this. It's the only one I could ever do. True to this day.

A little glimpse into my (madness, silliness, goofiness, oddness, weirdness, insert your own description here) that I am shackled with each day:

I am currently on a 23 day rotation with posting to different albums. The number fluctuates over time as albums begin and are completed. The current number is 23. I have a list that I carry in my wallet that lets me know which album I am on. When this system was in its infancy - I noticed a deficiency in the inherent rigidity of the system in that there was no way to post something that wasn't already part of an album without creating a new one. 'Random' emerged as a solution.

Sometimes I have used 'Random' to go on rants or raves about social issues, environmental issues or personal issues. Sometimes I have used it as a vehicle to post an image that doesn't fit in so much with the other work I am currently creating. Of the current 23 - I have two 'Random' slots. One at the middle and one at the end.

As I was looking around for an image to post today I stumbled across this one and thought: "Well, that's random."

I may have issues.

I hope that you have a wonderfully random Wednesday.

It's in the family, even his grandfather made them. The puppets are fixed on the shoulders and then comes the dress, so these puppets, when being danced on a festivity, are really huge.

Schon sein Großvater hat solche Puppen gemacht. Sie werden auf den Schultern befestigt und daran hängt dann noch das Kleid, so dass sie, wenn sie auf einem Fest getanzt werden, wirklich riesig sind.

Read a blog post about making my giant puppet for last year's Beltane.

It's designed to foreshorten a little - the head and shoulders are to a noticeably smaller scale than the buttocks and legs, to give an overall effect of towering even more than it really does.

Eventually I attached a human-scale mask to it, which was really a bit too small for the head; I decided to make it explicitly a mask, hung on by string, so it didn't need to be to scale, but I still rather wish I'd made it a little bigger.

When I took it out later for the Leith Festival, I did in fact make a bigger mask for it.

Here's one of the finished puppet in action.
